Does anyone know where to get some decent free sound editing software which can do the following:

Convert MP3 to Wav
Convert Midi to Wav
Crop segments out of wav, mp3 and midi files

And or

Mixing software
Compose ur own music etc

If you could give download links I'd be amazingly apreciative.

Convert MP3 to Wav - Winamp

Convert Midi to Wav - Converting midi isn't possible. The way people do get midi's on wavs is by playing the midi while they have another program recording all sound in wav form. It turns out very censored.gif ty, though.

Crop segments out of wav, mp3 and midi files - I haven't seen one that was free to this day, but one of my friends gave me his Nero key for the wav editor and I've been using the Nero wav editor to edit mp3, wav, and other sound files. I would check to see how much the programs run for. Spend a little if you need to. :/

Uh... Sound Recorder can cut off parts between the current position and the beginning or end of the wav. Then you can just combine segments.

For MP3 to wav, i use Decode Pro (as many people may disagree). I've never done midi to wav before, but heres a few programs I found here. I dont garentee stability and spyware free, so beware.

There is some new tool... it isn't free, it can convert mp3 to midi format! It seperates every sound too.

Just downloaded a whole heep of instrumentals on Kazaa and using Winamp to convert mp3 to wav, so how do you crop using sound recorder? and please don't tell me to record segments... lol.

To crop open the two different sound "software" pieces and set one to record and the other to play at the part you want and stop it when you've got the bit you want and stop the record asap! That should do it; remember Starcraft likes 8bit! or 16bit...can't remember!

Fruityloops

And my music teacher was telling me there IS some kind of new thingy to recognize different sounds and convert it to midi.

If you want a simple way to convert to midi, just use cakewalk and record it but it won't be split, and it will take up a lot more space than usual.

I've looked up sound conversioin programs, and though I've never gotten around to downloading any, I see tons of various programs(freeware) that boast that they can do those conversions...
I use Yahoo.com search happy.gif I like it more than anything else...*hugs the Yahoo! search*
Midi to Wave sounds possible. Wav to Midi sounds like it would need decent sound recognition, using my understanding of Midi. What I've been told, is that Midi is a bunch of notes that are played by your computer. Like a text document compared to a .jpg image(.wav comparison). Is this correct?
Sound composing...
Err... all I know of is a program which allows you to make Midis. It lets you place notes, has 8 tracks, plenty of instruments, tempo, and a few other things. I like it more than most I've seen, 'cause you place little dots in the places instead of notes, 'cause I've never learned note-language. It's easy to use, and even I(!!! GASP) have made some not-so-horrible-sounding things with it. They still suck badly though, and I can't seem to get a good boss-music-sound going with it... \: Oh well it's still cool. It's not free, but you can get a trial version. It hasn't stopped working for me sly.gif
It's called Midi Maker. Simply Midi Maker. I'll try to find it if someone says they want it.

There's a program called Gold Wave.
Later, I'm gona clean out my computer. I'll keep track of any sound editing/making/etc programs I have, and post their names here. I don't care much for anything except MusicMatch Jukebox, Winamp, and Midi maker though :l

Any midi to wav program does the same thing I described waaaay up there. It forces you to play the wav while the program records it. That is the ONLY way to convert midi to wav. Goldwave does that, 4 other program's i've downloaded and used do that.

Wav to midi, on the other hand, is a quick and easy conversion. Much like wav to MP3 or MP3 to WMA.

Yeah ... also ... midi is just a bunch of musical notes that the computer plays. But there are different ways the computer can play them and they all sound different (some higher quality, some just sound wierder). What I don't understand is, if it's just a set of musical notes, why can't they make actual programs to convert midi to wav? It's just converting a musical note to an actual sound, just like the adapters to read midi and decifer the sounds they make.

Midi to wav can be done with WinGroove. And with decent sound fonts, it's pretty good, though keep in mind that it's recording the sound directly from your midi sythesizer.

Trail version ets you 30 sec of midi to wav...and...full version get you, well, the whole song.

So... why are all the programs ones that just record it while playing it...?huh.gif

Seriously? I haven't been able to do that. What prog do you use for that?

Well there is a sound editing program that i use allows basically you to do anything to a sound file, your able to save ti as most any kind of sound file as well. The program is called Goldwave and you can get it at www.goldwave.com it will ask you to register and pay for it but of course if you want to be cheap (Like me smile.gif ) then just dont and you wont have to pay anything.

Talk about most useful person of the year! Rayne.

Anyone know of any sound composers too? Make our own techno?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rayne on 2004-02-03 at 09:36:28
Most composers cost something, but there are a few free ones out there like Fruityloops. I'm not sure were to get it because i haven't use composers a lot but I'm sure if you search for it you can find it. My friend uses it a lot to make his own hip-hop beats and they sound pretty good, so the composer must be decent.

Audacity. It's free and good enough without xtra BS features for mappers.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

another program is the one used by the original CC founders: Soundforge.... I don't have URL atm. Just reinstalled my PC.
