Staredit Network -> Games -> Play SNES Games Online

While this isn't brand-new, a lot of people still have no idea about it: the popular SNES emulator, "ZSNES," can be used for online play, and there's another program that builds on that and allows for a battle.net-type hall for people to connect to each other.

It's basically playing a regular 2-player (or in some cases, 3-player) Super Nintendo game, except the Player 2 controller is in another part of the world. You can chat in-game, too. The emulator uses ROMs, which (if you didn't already know) are downloadable copies of the actual games, and technically illegal. That said, it's a law gone unenforced as no profit is being lost and no harm is being done to any companies anyway, because SNES games aren't even manufactured today. (GBA ROMs, on the other hand, are still pretty illegal...)

What you need to play:
  • ZSNES 1.42 at zsnes.com
  • ZBattle at zbattle.net
  • a multiplayer ROM (find it yourself, or download it from others StarCraft-style while using ZBattle)
Note: Only works for Windows and Linux, unfortunately.
I just tried it earlier and played Super Mario World with a friend. It's really fun. Next I'm looking to find Secret of Mana... If anyone wants to play with me, go ahead and ask, though I don't think I'll be free until the weekend.

I play Secret of Mana but I use Snes 9x v. 1.39. We might not be compatible.

By the way, Secret of Mana is WAY too easy... Great story though, even though you're Mom in the game is a tree... (little story relevance)

Yeah, I've beaten SoM a long time ago, but never played it on 2 or 3 player mode.

If you're ever bored with the online games you have, though, ZSNES is worth downloading just to get more out of those old games. Too bad none of the Mega Man games had true multiplayer... That would have been great.

Actually, you may or may not have heard or played it, but there is a game I have for SNES called Megaman Soccer. Plus there is Megaman: The Power Battles and a sequel to that called Megaman 2:(forgot the name lol). I haven't tried that emulator stuff, but I'm thinking of doing so. Are emulators downloadable programs? Or are they a computer component? I never was aware of these things so, once I figure out what they are, I might try them out.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Mega Man Soccer... But I was thinking more about the traditional Mega Man games like MM7 and MMX. MM: Power Battles and Power Fighters (that's what the 2nd one is called) are for arcade systems, so that won't work. Unless someone converted them to a Super Nintendo format...

What emulators do is, basically, copy how a game console works and makes that a computer program. They used files called ROMs (which mean the converted console games -- the actual file type, like .smc, depends on the kind of program you're using) which function just like game cartridges. So yes, everything is downloadable. Emulators are 100% legal, but ROMs aren't, so you'll probably have trouble finding them on websites. The best place to find them is directly from people, on a peer-to-peer program or in specialized IRC chatrooms.

This is teh illegal... Compagnies can still sue you even if the games aren't being produced anymore.

You're spreading AND encouraging people to break the law and download ROMs to play online.

This is no different than talking to people about sharing mp3s of licensed music that can't be found on CDs. I've mentioned more than once that it isn't illegal, and intentionally did not provide anyone the locations of ROMs, so if someone wants to play online they've taken their own responsibility in doing so.

The laws in question are not enforced because that are detrimental to no-one. That doesn't make it right by any means, but nevertheless millions of people have no qualms about sharing music over the Internet, and this is the same. In fact all I'm doing is informing people.

w/e... You're probably another guy exploiting the copyrights and general laws that have flaws tongue.gif

Contrare,
This ISN'T ILLEGAL, if you OWN the catridge, and I own about 70 catridges for SNES, and about 150 NES catridges, and about 20 SEGA catridges.
If you own the CATRIDGE it isn't ILLEGAL,
And yea' playin' NES Gauntlet with a friend pwnz, and MM:S is.. well... odd at best...
Anyways,
I'll help yall out with a short list of multi-player SNES games.

Super Mario [Already mentioned]
SoM [Also Mentioned -.-]
Battle Toads [Decent Beat'em up, fun to turn friendly "fire" on and beat the hell out of your friends biggrin.gif]
Sun Set Riders [Fun shoot'em up, but... some of the bosses are INSANELY hard]
Contra: Alien Wars? [Pretty sure thats the name, one of my favorite games of all time... maybe not all time, but.. one of my favorites of the old cons0lez]
Goof Troop [....heh..]
Mortal Kombat I-III [Do I have to say anything?]
Killer Instinct [Another pimp fighter]
Donkey Kong Country [smile.gif]
And finally...
Zombies Ate my Neighbors [OMFGOFMGOFMGOFMG If you've never played this game... you should be shot and hung. Anyways, DL it, IT PWNS!! This is prolly my second fave multi-player game on SNES]

Hope that helps,
That should last yall for a little while,
The only downside with the SNES is, I don't believe it had many multiplayer rpg's, which = @#$%

Anyways.

Peace.

Oh Yea',
If you need any help with another list just tell me, That was a sloppy list.. -.-

The point is 0.000001% of people downloading the roms do NOT possess the cartige. Which is why it should be illegal alltogether...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Ferral on 2005-03-29 at 15:28:31
I don't believe it should be illegal, because..
For about a year my SNES died, it overheated or somethin'.. Not sure, it broke, I think too much eletricity, or somethin'.. And thats when I got into the emulation scene...

I don't believe jus' anyone should be able to download roms, but to get most roms you have to go through hell to get them...

I.E. vote sites.. =sighs= which is so #@$^en gay..

But the reason it was allowed is because of aging cartridges, which eventually break down if not cared for properly...

I believe that statement above is true.. lmao, er let me rephrase I THINK its accurate information..
Report, edit, etc...Posted by D_Scypher on 2005-03-30 at 23:19:43
Heh. Actually... They're still illegal. Even if you own the cartridge. All that stuff about owning the original cartridge or only keeping it for 24 hours is bullshit.

In the back of every Nintendo game manual (and probably the others too), among all the legal junk, it clearly states that any backup copies (which is basically what a ROM is) of this copyrighted game is illegal. So, downloadable ROMs of console games are pretty much always illegal.

Funny that I'm kind of discouraging people more from ROMs even though it's my thread. tongue.gif

You're right anyway.

It'd be like eat a bag of chips, then bring back the bag to get a "backup" copy to eat again in the future. Makes no sense. You bought the cartidge, it's breaking down. Now face the consequences like a man...

Well, maybe now I'll have a reason to get out my ZSNES again.
Haven't played Kirby: Superstar in a while, and it owns in multi-!
