How can you make them visible, work, or usable in the game?
You cannot use them in a game. They are the fictional representation of the dead in another plane of existance.
SPRITES not spirits are jsut in-game graphics without any physical properties.
You can place a sprite of a tree but units will walk over it because it has no properties, same happens with sprites of buildings and stuff like that.

Aye, sprites are damn weird. But they add flavour to a map. If used right.
Actually they're much simpler than the units themselves.
Sprites are the "Visual Effects" to a Doodad. For example, the Tree Doodad, which is basically the stump, lets you hide behind it and gives you the "Cover Bonus", this is the "Real" part of the Tree Doodad. If you use the Tree Sprite, which is basically the branches and leaves, then you cannot hide behind it and it will not give you the "Cover Bonus", instead you would just walk right over it because it is the "Visual Effects" of the Tree Doodad. That should clear things up.
What makes you think he doesn't really mean spirits, not sprites =)
Well spirits is like ghost
lol. maybe he did somewhere, or maybe he got confused because there was a spellnig error somwhere...
and ya, sprites are just pictures, a marine is a picture, but it has unit properties, and animation.(i think!)
Then there's sprite units, odd and ideal for cool glows. Their HP is always <default SC hp>/<custom set hp>
Kind of useful for odd ratios.
