My goal was to get a computer for $800, but it came out to be $1,000 including tax and shipping. I'm not the most knowledgeable with hardware, so I wanted to know if you guys thought this was a good deal power/coolness-wise and price-wise.

Well, I'll have to ask my brother down in Missouri some time for you. He makes Super-Computers for a living. Well, they call them 'super' cuz they are like EXTREMELY awesome and powerful. But, yea, I'll ask him for ya and he should be able to tell me what to tell you what's good or not.

You're still missing a CD-ROM drive.

Don't get me wrong this is a great computer, but don't kid yourself with the video card. If all you are playing is Starcraft, then your video card should be fine. But if you advance into any kind of new technology like Half Life 2, Doom 3, World Of Warcraft, and so on, you are likely in need of spending more than $190 on it.
From a canadian standpoint too, that is all american pricing, so although the conversion is rather low, its still gonna be more expensive for someone here:P

What is bad about it that it won't allow it to run HL2 or D3?

I spent $150 on my graphics card... -> Geforce FX 5700 256 mb
It runs Halflife 2 flawlessly and Doom 3 in Video Quality High (2nd from highest)

Oh it will allow you to run those games alright ... at a very low resolution going pretty slowly. You need a powerful graphics card for the newer games.

It's not so much that it is a bad card, rather that is not going to handle high res, high quality games. To run those things at a smooth pace the settings are going to have to be turned way down. Also it will not last as long under stresses such as those kinds of games. I have seen numbers of cards appear to run those games fine... for the first months anyways.

A friend has a monitor I can get from him, so I'll take out the cost of the monitor and apply it to getting a better video card. Any suggestions?
