Staredit Network -> Ideas -> Thoughts for my new rpg...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rantent on 2005-04-08 at 03:42:04
Ok I'm making a new rpg. Basically a story about a guy who as a kid witnesses his town get destroyed and his entire family killed. He basically sets out on a journey to kill the the commander and get revenge on the country that invaded. On his way he finds other towns that have their own problems and has to help them out against this giant force. When he kills the king, he relaeses a demon that was inside who was originally causing all of the havoc. He then must search the country for a magic sword to defeat the demon before the country decays into the underworld.

This is going to be a huge RPG, that I might need help with later on, but for now I'm simply looking for ideas. To get a feel for how long this might take, I am doing most of the terrain freehand so the map will be mainly extended. (If you played tactical paths, thats sorta what it will be like, but more complex) Ya, so right now I'm simply looking for ideas of Quests, Sidequests, Spells, Battle Scenes you would like to see, Names of coll characters, some cool new stuff, some neat areas to have, feedback, ect. smile.gif

This is still in thought mode, so really anything would be helpful.

Well i think that you should have certain towns already turned over to the demon's "control" i guess you would say sort of a ghost town. Also something i don't see often is items to cast spells in addition to mana. I think that would keep me interested for awhile. Hmmmm.....maybe fighting the demon in the underworld....that would be cool...just animate it with things like people being ravaged by lings till death only to come back to suffer it again. I also believe it would be an interesting twist if the hero (or heroine) saw his family suffering in hell only to throw him or her into a rage and unleash a new ability against the demon...this ability would be good but one time use. Ummmm.....of course that's just me.....if you need someone to test i am on USEast using the name Phoenix)Soul) normally in the channel Clan S0ul (that'd be a zero as the o). Best of luck with your map it sounds fun to me already, but those are things i would add. I will post again if i think of anything else.

Ooh! I doo like the idea of an underworld, I might have the castle transform after the demon gets unleashed. biggrin.gif

Here's my one suggestion:
Try to use a more original storyline. I'm not sure about others, but I hate seeing someone use a storyline when it's already been used dozens of times by countless other people.

'I am a teenager who for no explained reason will be hundreds of times more powerful then the master warrior in my village, and this one evil dude destroyed my town, I will get revenge. Oh no, by killing him, the demon was unleashed. I must find the Sword of Cliché, the only sword that can kill him, before he turns this whole land evil!'

I especialy hate the revenge part.
If I were given a dollar for every person I've seen make-up a charatcer, be it for an Rpg project or Rp he's playing, or Rpg with a character that has the whole 'revenge my town was destroyed' thing going on, I'd be rich. I have seen it literally over NINETY FRICKIN' TIMES!
Is originality out of style right now or something?!

Where have you seen this, I really like to know... I have never once seen an rpg on sc that has a 'revenge my town was destroyed' storyline. Please could you be helpfull and list reasons why its not original, rather than simply stating it isn't.
Or at least suggest ways to improve it. Telling someone to simply scrap their ideas is not very nice. sad.gif

Still, the idea has been done before. How about... a boy wakes up to his home town destroyed, and the inhabitants gone. He moves through the world, trying to find the things gone, but as it progresses, it seems moreso and moreso an illusion. The interesting part would be that it would be told by him, so unless it's explained in the end, you get to make your own conclusions. But, you CAN take a cliche concept and make it worthwhile... it's just that originality is generally better.

the only thing i havent seen: a very detailed story line, i meanthat as in, almost like 99% of the map is words beer.gif

so it makes them read a story while they play.

IDEAS:

make it so that you can buy mercenaries.

also, how many players? since from your words, it seems like one.

dang, all this people making RPGs makes me wana make 1 too!

heh, im off to make a RPG, l8er all.

Oh, another thing i'd like to see is more "gray" characters. You know characters that are not clearly "good" or "evil" but an area in between. For example, a demon with a conscience, who agrees with the hero although he still fights for the corrupt ones, or a person he used to know (say a younger brother) who believes the demons are correct and allies himself with them. An nice twist would be like that. The hero's brother allies with the demon becoming the commander (right hand man of demon) who caused the razing of his own hometown. Although these are just suggestions, i think more "gray" characters make RPGs alot more captivating.

This seems similar to FFX...........*sigh* repeating storylines is something that happens alot with RPGs....i also have not seen a RPG on SC that has a storyline even close to this one. Almost all RPGs have the theme of "stop the spreading evil." Bring me one that is not and maybe we'll alter that storyline to make it fit SC and you better.

Thanks for your input people. biggrin.gif And just to clear something up for all the others who think I should change the storyline, THIS WAS THE BEGINING OUTLINE OF THE STORY!!! It wasn't anything close to the final idea. There are so many variations that could be put on this that would make it almost anything.
I'm thinking about having many of the characters in the story help you when they see gain in it for themselves. They would act like real people, rather than many of the "I will give you anything you need because you are destined to save us" I see in other RPGs.

how would they know? maybe you have to do quests before they finally reconize you.

You know one thing iver never ever seen? You being a badguy trying to stop the "good". But techniaclly you are the good-guy from your point of veiw.

Notice how I did not say 'for every Starcraft Rpg with', and instead I said something much more general?
Or, wait, am I supposed to go through forums, thousands of people's Battle.net profiles, PenguinPlugged replays of Rp games that occurred before Penguin Plug existed, and Forum Rpg's, and then SOMEHOW turn the text into map files that I can give to all of you?
Though, there are a few unpopular SC maps that do this.

Actualy, I was once planning on making a map in which you're a Night Creature getting revenge on humans for mercilessly attacking your kind without reason, though that'd be more along the lines of the 'bad'guys being misunderstood then just playing as evil creatures.
I was also once planning on making an Rpg in which you are the minion of a dead Necromancer, and you're only barely stronger then others of your kind. Like, 15 HP and 3 damage, instead of 12 HP and 2 damage.
