Are ESRB ratings fair? I don't think that all of them are because some games that I have played were rated M but they weren't as bad as the rating said they were. Some games are true to their ratings but definutely not all of them are fair. What do you think?

Adults want to protect their children from seeing abusing violence, nudity and/or sexual behaviors, blood, and abusive actings. Thus, the ESRB was created.

I think they're fair, no one cares anyway, if a 13 year old guy wants to play D2, he will, cuz believe it or not, D2 shouldn't be played by less than 18 years old people. It's not like bear, or cigarrets; it's not a "fundamental" law which the government impose. Ratings doesn't have any meaning anyway, once the child reaches 14; he already knows about all there's not to know, so WTF... Television is worst than that.

Gah, there are 8 year old on StarCraft, and that's rated Mature. And how violent is that game anyways? Sure, the campaign is a little nasty for little kids, but I would hope they'd be able to tell fiction from reality. Plus, all those kids that turn "crazy" because of "violent" games have a few screws loose in their heads in the first place. There's something called common sense you know. And most kids aren't desensitized to killing from games, I mean, most kids would be horrified to see a dead corpse even if he plays gory games a lot.

Whoops, my mistake. Well, the fact is that more Mature games are played by really young people. Most parents (except for really little kids) probably won't even bother looking at the rating. As long as the cover dosen't look too bad, and the price isn't too high, most parent would just buy what the child wants.

Oh well, rating really don't make much of a difference.

Personally, I think the higher the age rating the more kids would want to play it. tongue.gif

I was 10 when I got starcraft, my parents got it for me right when it came out. Back then, it was rated M for Mature. I still got the orginal CD case with the rating.

I say, if I want to go play a game with alot of gore, death, and nudity I should be able to. I use games to escape having to think about different things for a while. I know that when I'm done playing everything has gone back to reality, and that I shouldn't do things I see in games.

Most kids should know not to do the things you see in games. I mean c'mon who actually would go out and shoot someone just because they saw someone do it in a game.

I think that the ratings are reasonable but no one really listens to them... although one time... when Mortal Combat first came out all the video rental places in my town would NOT let anyone rent the game who was under the age of 18 regardless if you had concent from your parents or not, that quickly died out... But i say let 8 and 9 year olds play games like that.. how else are they gonna learn how things die and the human anatomy wink.gif

Actually, I don't find Mortal Kombat II to be that bloody. Sure, sure of the parts were gory, but it wasn't as bad as most people initially saw it. Compared to some games today, I think it would be rated Teen. Of course, some people would argue that this is because we're "desensitized" to it, but has it really been that bad? Society didn't just become a place where people beat each other up in real life for fun. Some people are just...well...over-reacting.

The same thing can be said about many things, like gun laws. Do people really think that banning guns from public use, or registering them will stop people from obtaining it? Most law-abiding citizens that do all the regulations and obtain the licsenes the government sets up probably won't misuse the gun in the first place!

I think theyre OK. Except I dont think halflife should be M.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rayne on 2004-02-25 at 08:18:53
Well probably the reason being Mortal Combat was taken so hard back thenw as because it was one of the first real bloody and extremely violent games to hit the shelves... after people got addicted to it out poored a number of sequals and games similar to it.

Yes Mortal Kombat started the whole rating system because it had real people dying and getting their spinal cords ripped out.

I did a speech on Video game violence in my Spanish class for some reason the other day. I think the rating system is fair, but my parents could care less what kind of game i play.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by en_taro_shrimpy on 2004-02-29 at 17:07:39
Well the rating system can be fair at times I just don't like it because my parents don't let me play any M rated games even if they aren't that bad.

I just play the games i like, I dunno if my parents really care.. All they want is that i go outside. eeeek outside!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rayne on 2004-03-01 at 10:37:47
Yea when i actually lived with my parents thats what they wanted when i was younger.. then once i started highschool they pretty much didnt care.. hell i played the most violent and gorey games out there when i was younger and my dad was there playing them with me... goes to show you that society doesnt paticularly care that much about the ratings of certain things.

Has anyone here actually ever played a video game and actually went around thinking about obtaining Rocket or Grenade Launchers and stuff and running around blasting people with them? I doubt any semi-sane individual actually has, or will.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by en_taro_shrimpy on 2004-03-01 at 15:06:05
That's what I try to tell my parents but noooo they don't listen

That's the problem. Sane people are ok, but there are these insane people trying censored.gif z they saw just for fun. Remember that lil kid harming (alot [or killing, not sure]) his friend cuz he only wanted to make something he saw in the Power Rangers game/show? And people becomming violent cuz they think it's normal and such.
