Staredit Network -> Miscellaneous -> What is with society?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yoshi da Sniper on 2004-02-21 at 23:00:06
The marketers, companies, and our whole society is based apon not doing work.

Why is it exactly, that someone feels really satisfied when they dont have to do anything, as apposed to accually doing it? confused.gif

Cuz before, you didn't have to work your ass off to earn money and buy things, then pay taxes then make children. You had to do it all yourself, for yourself. The strong survived, which caused humanity to live on, and we're here now. Some work; their only purpose being getting to 60 years old and getting well earned vacations, others cheat the system, which causes the normal people to curse more, and some just don't do anything.

I'm not satisfied going to school learning things I don't need to learn, not satisfied either when I see how costly it is just to gaz my car, or pay my taxes.

Satisfaction is ephemere...

Its sorta sad how are economy is based apon how much you DONT do?

Hmm, not necessary Yoshi. For example, I feel more satified building the robot than sitting in front of a television and staring at it all day. I'd rather go do something fun and producative, like learn how to weld, or building my own robot. I can't stand sitting there and doing nothing. The only real thing that I do that isn't really productive is playing comnputer games, and most of them are oldies that are discontinued, like One Must Fall 2097 (which I just got hooked on AGAIN), except for StarCraft. In a sense, I pay more money to occupy myself then I use to do "nothing".

You're more like me then Spaceboy. You'd rather learn then waste your life.

I gave up TV ages ago. I never watch it tongue.gif

However, television does has some good points. Most "news" I get is from the news when we have dinner, or sometimes the radio. Sure, I would rather learn than sit there and do nothing, but there are times when you do get exausted and burnt out, and you just want to lie there and do nothing (for me, it's usually in bed and reading a book, but you get the point). But some people lie there and do nothing when they are fit to go and do some work. At least in computer games, you do train your mental abilities, but just sitting in front of a television screen is pointless. Well, I do still go and watch movies occasionally (like once every two months) and sometimes invite friends over to do nothing for a day, so I do waste my time sometimes, but it's not a common occurance unlike some people.

Hmm... I don't do much.
I usually just sit in front of my computer, playing SC or at SEN.
Next in the list of things I most often do is reading books, then comes playing video games, then comes TV.
Though, if I had the materials, I'd be doing something like clay-working or wood carving a lot. I just don't have the materials, and I don't have the money for the materials. As for learning... I'm not very good at searching, so I learn more about life playing SC and browsing SEN then searching for it on the internet lol.

I can't take someone else's money.
I can't print my own money.
Why dont I just lay down and DIE?

People do not realize that the struggles in life just make them stronger. Look at Africa, people struggle through there night and day, yet we, in America or so, just worry about trivial things (will she say yes or no?, omg my nail is broken!, oh no my graphics card is busted!). Why do you think most African Americans are great at so many sports? I'm not trying to be racist, but because of their intense struggles, it has ultimately brought them the gift of being stronger, faster, and tougher. People may think we are better off as generations go on, but the truth is, we make the world and ourselves worse with technology. People in older generations will be stronger naturally than newer ones because we have reduced ourselves to working in gyms and lifting weights when in older days, they used those exercises for a purpose (running from danger, throwing rocks to kill prey). Yes you may criticize me for using cavemen, but think, do you think we are getting better in any sense? I mean sure I wouldn't want to live in the wild and stuff, but when I saw on tv people who say "make money faster!" and say "it has changed my life!", I can just say pathetic. Pollution, over population, yes and the inevitable fate of earth. We have won the war, but in the cheapest, most cowardly way possible. Yet I am not saying I am better. In fact I am part of the pathetic society which hungers only money, neither the values of life, nor the struggles of growing up.

So the point is society is constantly degrading and each generation is more pitiful than the one before it. Each sucessor will do less to achieve more, where they think knowledege is so advantageous, but they will ultimately succumb to the fact that they are biological and that biology will always be limited (meaning death, disease, the realization that you can't live forever). Sure knowledge will keep expanding, but the body will always limit where it goes, but people don't realize to work on their biological aspect as well as mental (meaning there is more to life than knowledge). They cherish learning, yet they forget the nature side as well. I am also a victim.

That's why philosophers were created =O

Pounder the mistery of why men does less, to get more.

Being lazy is an art anyway, if your lazy and can still earn your life and enjoy it, well, that's good for you, I say. If you can't stand doing nothing, do something. I CAN stand doing nothing, since, basicly, I have no friends and never do anything. Got used to it. I draw, then.

"Listen to TV is a loss of time" my ass. I'm learing things without even MOVING or WANTING to learn them. Isn't that the ultimate evolution of life??

Hmm, just a small sidenote, since it had been mentioned of the limits of our biological selves, why not develop the technology to transfer ourselves to mechanical beings? Of course, I'm talking technology far beyond today's possibilities, but what are the implications of that? The fact that all parts can be replaced, and your "natural" lifetime is unlimited? Then what will happen to society? What if you don't really have to work, and you basically live on forever? Is it a good thing, or a bad thing? By the way, this was talked about a bit in the 2001: A Space Odyssey novel, which there was a part about beings who evolved to the extent of their biological capabilities, and then was able to further "evolve" by changing to mechnical beings, and then to beings of energy, but you get the point.

I'd say that that would be a bad thing because then you miss out on one big part of the whole life experience and that would be death. Besides who would want to become part robot.

I agree with a lot of what you say Revelade thats why i dont care how easy i have it still work my ass off, each day i go to the gym and push it until i cant go any further. Because i dont think life should be easy, i believe it should be a challenge that we just pull through and accomplish. And i do agree that most americans do have it easy and msot of them are the kind of people who just take it in and dont do much work at all, those are the weaker of society in my opinion...

Well, as for what Spaceboy said...
that would be horrible. Immortality would be mental torture. You'd WANT to die aftter maybe a decade or so after you normally would have without the transfer of your conscioncenes into some other being.
As for what Revelade said... I've thought about the fact that we are weaker due to our lack of need to be strong.. Yet.
Ultimately, technology is going to KILL us, though, more than just weaken. We're growing dependant on technology and all, and so we would just HATE to get rid of lots of our lazy pasttimes and such just so that we stop pollution, and stuff.
That and we use our nifty guns and stuff to kill for "sport", as it's called even though it's hardly any type of sport. And we have animal poachers.
GO PEOPLE THAT DONT USE WIERD THINGS LIKE TV AND GUNS AND REFRIDGERATORS AND OTHER THINGS LIKE THAT YAAAY!

Heh, the implications is that eventually, the mechnical parts of the robot is controlled by biological parts (think cyborg I guess), and slowly, the biological parts are removed as they are replaced by better mechanical counterparts. Eventually, you're left with a brain, and that'll go too, along with some other mechanical counterpart.

My personal view is that at that point, it'll be no different than having a normal human body (except that we'll know exactly how everything works, and how to repair things in it). If you think about it, your human body is just a very complex machine. Your brain is one powerful computer core, while your body is made of a strong frame (bones) and biological linear actuators (muscles). It delivers energy to all of its components (nutrients and oxygen in the bloodstream) and it is protected by an outer covering (skin). If you analyse it more, you begin to wonder, what does make you "human"? Is it because of your biological componets that is made of carbon and hydrogen? Is it the emotions that humans possess? Why can't machines emulate the same thing?

Of course, this eventually become this huge debate, which everyone is all over the chart in terms of opinions. Oh well, time to have some form of a debate in here.
