I don't really see how it would help you, unless your UMS map will be melee based. Other than that, like if you are making defenses, bounds, or totally differen't maps, I don't see how melee could help you, not even the terrain could help you really, if you are using like square terrain that's nothing like melee.

Making melee won't help you much. You still need to learn the triggers for the UMS map. Even if it is melee basede UMS you will learn about terrain and/or unit placements but no trigger. (I bet this topic was to get minerals like the ones in gamming forum...)

Who told you this?
In the long run, do you want to be better at melee or UMS?
Just choose whichever and go with it.
You dont need to do melee before going with UMS, unless of course you are trying to learn balance issues for Melee UMS.

There is nothing wrong with staring out with melee. You need to be familiar with how terrain works how doodads are placed and need to learn to make a map aesthetically pleasing witch is many times needed in UMS as well.

If you don’t know the basic terrain editor works then you shouldn’t really overwhelm yourself with triggers yet.

But that’s my opinion of course I’ve seen too many peoples first maps where you can tell aesthetics didn’t play a part at all. I’m talking RPGs that follow a straight edged zig zag path across the whole map with no doodads or terrain type variation. Then of course you have your defense maps that use supply depots or minerals as barriers like its terrain.

Just learn to place terrains, units, and doodads, then move to UMS, if you want to really learn UMS, before mastering Melee (optional).

if you want to master melee, it's good to learn some extended terrain, which generally more comes out in UMS.

melee is basically random terrain placed in a : A. pattern B. Random style
C. Ordered D. Gay.

You wont learn much off melee in my opinion, cause you'll have to know like special effects, like a burning tree, some units to spice up the map, triggers to make things run. all melee dose is help you get betetr at terrain...

also, i agree with KaboomHahahein. (I wonder if he knows minerals ganna be reset in v5?)

It doesnt matter really. If you are good with using triggers, do UMS maps, otherwise try your best to make a good looking Melee map.

I started off with melee maps because I was just fooling around with the editor and didn't know what I was doing. But in the long run it helped because I familarized myself with the editor and terrain. Once I knew that, I learned there was such things as triggers. It was all a gradual process. Dont learn to make a 'certain' type of map first, just learn about map making in general. Make some terrain, study some triggers, and test a lot. Theres nothing more to it, just practice. Good luck happy.gif

Its really all about how you want to go around doing it.
