I've been working on a map with a relatively simple concept for a while now, but it's just different enough to require some explaining, and i'm not certain as to an effective way to make these people know what's going on. I have no space on the actual map to work with at this point, soooo yeah.

the map is called Feudal Warfare, and features two players as "kingdoms" and six as "townships". The goal is simply to be the last player/team standing, and the setup encourages alliances, as i will explain in a moment.

across the map are beacons controlled by p12, which are a source of a small amount of money (50 minerals... when one of your weakest men cost 50) and soldiers (2 50 min soldiers, usually.) however, you accumulate money significantly faster by killing enemy units and buildings. there is a small amount of building-tech to be done, as well as 255 upgrades.

i suppose it would probably be easier to show the map to you, and since i don't really have a website i can upload to...
well, if you want to contact me, get me on AIM. AzureShock
(shrugs)

but to get back to my question, i'm not sure how to convey the message of "ally people and kill the rest" while still explaining the beacon-system and the fact that you'll get money from kills to the everyone who skips briefings.

ideas?

I don't think you can do the kills if someone skips the breifing.

I'm a bit confused.. you're having trouble with allying or displaying text?

I think he's trying to say that the briefing explains his map pretty thorough, and that many people skip the briefing, and what can he do for the players to still get the message even though they skipped the briefing.. But then again, i'm pretty confused myself..

If anything, i'd forget about the briefing and make an in-game tutorial that'll start at the begining of the game, before anything starts..

Or, as the first message, you can have

3 enters or something

" READ THIS! "

Have an option in the game (A beacon placed in a corner or something) where it gives you a small, quick tutorial. Or, you could make an option before the game starts which allows players who don't know how to play choose to read a tutorial or not. Then again, they just may never read it. So the best thing to do is make an intro at the very beginning explaining your map (no option). It should be concise though.

make it so there is no briefing, and then at the start of the game it goes
"How to play:
etc."

Yeah, beginning of game tutorial (so long as it isn't too lengthy) might be ok.

I'm also intrigued as to how the topic creator managed to make so many spelling mistakes in the title but hasn't made one in the topic itself...

I don't like in game tutorials personally.
make it optional instead of it being mandatory, so that you have to skip it.

I like in-game beacons and such where you can step on the beacon to get help on playing. That way people who have played before don't need to get spammed with messages.

If you have it able to skip, someone might be reading it because they don't know whats going on.

Also with the string count, it would be the same because your doing -X amount briefing strings, +X amount trigger strings. So in game would be good.
All you would have to do is just give a quick explanation.
If you read his post (which I just skimmed blushing.gif ), I think he was saying he wants to make sure no one misses the briefing because sometimes you press "Start" or something and you miss it.

Ok here is a quote:

"Who skips briefings"
Some people do, even though it is a new game they have never played, then if its setup like this, they'll be like "Wtf? what is this?"
So if you make it so you have to read it, then no one will get confused.

Just put a little tiny instruction thing that lasts no more than approx. 45 seconds; maybe 1 minute.

(Sorry if that is jumping around a bit)
