for some reason my friend in school told me that making a small map with lots of triggers and locations can make downloading take forever.

is there any way to make it fast with short cuts?

i know a little from the diffrence between the always and elapse time to 0 conditions. the always can make the game lag and slow dl but elapse time can make it only once and doesnt repeat horrible with preserve trigger than always condition does.

When you're ready to release it the best thing you can do is fully compress it using ProEdit.

EDIT: I got a map down to 6kb (64x64 with like 8 triggers).

And DK got a map down to half that with using only 1 trigger.

Your friend at school has no idea what he is talking about.

There are 2 things that effect how fast you download maps.
1. The file size of the map
2. The connection speed between the host and the person downloading the file.
This is true with every file transfer not just SC maps on B-net.

Its a very simple concept, Think of a moving company moving boxes into a house. How long it takes depends on how fast they go, and how much they have to move. The contents of the box do not change how long it takes to move. [/i](weight of the boxes factor into how much they have to move)[/i]

So in contradictory to what your friend said; Triggers and Locations hardly increase the file size of the map at all. Yes in reality they will increase your maps file size slightly but the differance is to small to worry about.
So don't worry about making too many triggers and locations if all your concerned about is download time.

The #1 Factor that increases the size of starcraft maps is and always will be Wavs.

I have made maps with more than 800 trigger blocks (some were very big) and it downloads fast.

Combining Bolt_Head and Chui's comments:

-Don't overdo sounds (or get OSF)
-Compress your sounds
-Compress your map
-Get broadband
-Kick dial-up people when they join your games (ironic, since I have been one last month and had been found crying "Plz don't ban my DL is slow but I don't lag in the game")

If you do this I will hunt you down and castrate you because you are an inconsiderate asshole who shouldn't have the right to propogate.

OSF was cancelled I think....


Also keep in mind it might not be the host laggin your download... if one person is dling from host already then 2nd person with map in game gives you the map... and so on... its more efficient... thankfully blizzard set it up that way .

Downloading is on a 1 to 1 basis. For every one person downloading another person is uploading. You will NEVER see more than 4 people downloaidng a map at once because starcraft only allows 8 players.

The problem is most people don't understand that half the time someone is downloaidng slow it ISN'T there connection.

For an example say you have Dial-Up connection but already have the map. When other people join the game if your the only person there who doesn't have someone downloading off of then they will start downloading off of you. Even if a faster connection becomes avalable shortly after they will continue to download off the person they started downloading from unless they rejoin the game.

Thats why many times i'll ask a person downloading "are you on dial up?" because alot of times there not and they could download the map alot faster if they rejoin and download from a faster user.

aint that kind of dumb dont ya think. should the download from the fastest dl person first then start spreading to other people and start downloading to and only the fastest person.

First off the download speed does will be as fast as the person with the Slower connection. Not the host's speed.

When a person joins they start downloading from the person who they have the lowest ping with. As long as they are not downloading or uploading to someone else.

In your example Rexy would download from the person who they have the faster connection with.

The connection bars you see is not that persons connection speed. It is that persons connection speed with you. (its there ping rate)
