You can tell because everyone starts putting them out, then the next day they are in.
For me its because my mom yells at me and my brother to empty all garbages and take the big can out to the middle of the circle. (I live in a circle)

Nobody comes to get our trash we have to drop it off at the dump. Seeing as I'm the first who doesn't get there trash picked up, I feel special. 
We do this whenever the trash is full, so I guess you could say EVERYDAY!

thats the same thing my family does, but the trash truck comes around my neighborhood on tuesdays...

umm, you mean a truck comes to your guys houses and takes the trash for you? thats awsome, i wish we had one in massachussets. we have to pay to bring trash to the dump. 1$ for 1 bag

Yep. Trucks with two people come down your street. The driver stops then the guy hanging on the outside of the truck steps down and picks up the trash and throws it in the truck and they go to the next house. For recycling the have little compartments in their truch where paper, glass, plastic etc go and the guy sorts it out and throws it in the correct place. Cool huh? Well that is how it works in my region.

You fill it up.
The night before it comes you set it on the side of the street (or in my case in the middle of the circle).
They come at like 7:00 AM and there garbage trucks have a giant claw. It pickes up your garbage can and picks it up and flips it upsidedown and dumps it into the truck (Not the can, the garbage. The can's lid is on a hinge thingy and pops open).
Then it gently sets your can down and proceeds.

Kaboom said it all, except sometimes there's only 1 garbage dude, and he drives and picks up our trash. Recycle is the same.
BTW, my garbage gets picked up on wendsday, since the garbage truck passes around dawn. But we bring it out on tuesday. So I assume some of you get your garbage picked up on the next day.
