I'd say get Guild Wars. It takes a new approach to gaming instead of the stale style of most MMORPG's... Online is free and joining and having a guild to fight with is much better than by yourself. In real life, people are specialized in different roles, which applies in this game.

I got guildwars yesterday, adn according to xfire i have played 11 hours so far = )
this game PWNS so bad it's so addictive. i say guildwars all the way

WoW is a pretty intense game, but it takes quite a bit of computer resources to actually have fun playing it :-\ Plus that shit costs money monthly.. and you HAVE to use a credit card to pay for it, which sucks terribly bcuz most kids can't get there hands on a CC.
I haven't played GW yet but i've heard a LOT of good things about it, plus you don't have to pay regularly for it.
I'll pry end up getting GW here soon.. Woooo !

Guild Wars is a good game if your a PvP freak, but ive heard that its PvE is lacking.
For those who dont like WoW for the solo reason that you have to pay, realise that $15 a month is NOTHING. I have a part time job, i get paid around $7 an hour, so my many hours of WoW fun costs me 2 hours of work.
Anyone thing i LOVE about WoW is the lack of 12 year olds, for the sole reason that they cant get the money to pay! Most players are mature and have a good sence of humour and are fair when it comes to the distributing of loot etc.
Oh and i dont have a credit card, i buy pre-paid game cards

America rocks!!!!! Ive played both. The graphics arent great because its an MMORPG. With 200k+ players about 15k per server. That would be a shiload of 
ing lag. The game costs money to play to upkeep the servers for this lag. I played runescape(free0 and that. Its slow and lagzilla. WoW offers Great PvP. At least before the honors system. You know how fun it is to go into a newb city and just stand there nuking ppls(1 hit kills) its so fun. Its like no we must stop you. Awww i died for the elevendy seventh time awww crap not again. When they could have just not have encountered me at all and woulda been safe(idiots) its fun though. PvE is damn good. It also has a great story. Guild wars isnt as good. It just isn't. WoW also has a lot more to do than guild wars. WoW has a massive world. Its all open. There are guilds also. And the new battlefields are going to be awsome. Guild wars doesnt have battlefields(AWSOME). Its worth the cost. All $38 my dad pays every 3 months. I have to was his 2 cars every weekend not much. School(2 much for a job so yeah)

Never tried Guild Wars, but WoW is the third best game I've played so far(Only Starcraft and Halo 1 is better).
