Melee Makers Interviewed at WCG

WCG 2005 official maps were created by Byun, Jong-Seok, Cho, Seung-Yeon, and Kim, Jin-Tae. They are the map creators and staff members of www.mapdori.com. They also create most, but not all, the official maps for Korean TV broadcasted porffesional leagues.

These three map makers have made quite a name for themselves. The most famous of them all being RoseofDream. Even these gosu melee map makers make blunders and already small mistakes have been found in their maps proving that no map is ever perfect. Through game play and people using their maps they can however achieve pretty balanced and fun maps with small adjustments.

Check for example Paranoide Androide's tactical advantage to Terran early on in the game:

Just press where it says: "<+++скачать Пример>" to see a short clip.

If your Russian is poor just read the replies and the following PGTour thread and you will get more information.
But they are aware that no map is perfect and this is why they insisted their maps be tried as BETA before the actually WCG finals and preliminaries. Let me quote Kim when he talks about the most important feature in map making.

Gameplay is most important. I'm talking about the visual aspect of the gameplay. We must concern with the elements that are shown to the audiences and the viewers at home. Even if the balance is good, if the game is boring or not very fun to watch, it can't be considered a good map.

I will not bore you too much but go check the interviews at the WCG site were they talk about map making and their maps.

I've read others say that the WCG maps this year are imbalanced, but let's hope some interesting games come out of them and look past the flaws in the maps. Ogogo WCG! happy.gif

Probably because Paranoid Android or whatever its called is one of the neatest looking maps sc has seen, and it has a giant bridge, and thats just awesome.

Damn. I used to think that it takes some time to learn how to do good maps and that the first tries are pretty much for the trash can. And now these people tell me Bifrost or Nostalgia were their first maps ohmy.gif

WCG:

A tournament of sorts by Samsung where many games are played for cash prizes, Starcraft being one of them. There's also WarCraft, Halo2, Warhammer, and other games. Top prize is $20,000 I think and 2nd and 3rd is $10,000 and $5,000. People from all over the world compete in it.

Have you guys seen the "favorite game" poll at their site? Broodwar owned. I'll post it later.

Cuz TL and company rounded up everyone and got them to vote. No one else did that for other games. tongue.gif But SC is a really good game, I'm just saying if every gamer voted, games like Halo 2 would own all others. But that's just my opinion. closedeyes.gif

Team liquid doesn't have thousands of active members.

The same thing happens with W3, but I can't say for sure about the others. Halo 2 isn't even that popular, even compared to CS 1.6. And you have to remember that it was a world wide poll.

ADDITION:
In fact, we were already winning that one when someone posted it.

For the curious and out of sheer boredom, I'll go ahead and translate the blurb for you:

"Sent by [7x]Rus_Brain @ 2005-05-14 06:56:15

A bug which gives Terran a huge advantage on the map Paranoid Android 0.90, found by [7x]Konsul. (sic, it was a sentence fragment)
It can be used against Zerg, if it hasn't gone mutas. Against Toss, it is pretty much GG. [Toss] can do practically nothing in return.
Strange... a WCG map. Looks like the WCG mapmakers have become completely lazy.

lol
It is a beta. You know what that is supposed to mean? The bug won't be there in the final version, don't worry.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by best.sock on 2005-05-18 at 13:18:06
ya that is a pretty big bug though, i am quite suprised no one found it earlier.

About the Paranoid Andriod "bug":
I hate it when people call that a "Bug" its not. Its just a disadvantage to not terran players that can easily be fixed. Also, it takes a while to pull off, while your trying for 50 seconds to try and put a tank on some small island what do you think the other player is doing? Also, by that time, dont you think they would have air? or a drop ship? Or if its zerg and they didnt upgrade ovies they would have an expo to bring thier drones to untill they take out the tank.
Its really not a big problem in my mind, people dont use it, and even if they do, its easily countered, and if people think it is a big enough problem that one tank is attacking from low to high terrain, it could be fixed in the editor with 1 click.

The schedule and location for WCG 2005 Grand Final has been confirmed.

WCG 2005 Grand Final will be held in Suntec Singapore, the exhibition hall/convention center with cutting edge technology and scale, in the host city of Singapore for 5 days from November 16th to 20th.

You happy now, Yenku? And the prelims in each country start about...today, I think.

And it is a pain for toss since the only airships that attack ground are the scout and carrier, and both cost the amount for a stargate and cost for scout, which is pretty expensive, especially since many strats don't include having SG's unless toss is going carriers, and since the island can only fit a tank, shuttles won't work. By the time that SG gets up and the scout pops, you're whole expansion could be destroyed and mining delayed.

meh. no big deal.
but yea, i know its a pain, and i agree it should be changed.
