Staredit Network -> Miscellaneous -> Geniuses of Battle.net
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Fortune on 2005-05-25 at 21:47:26
Before I entered Yeow's topic, entitled Geniuses of Battle.net, I thought it was going to be a somewhat similar topic to this. When I did happen to enter the topic and realized he was making fun of some Blizzard Support Reps, I decided to take the idea as my own.

Who do you believe are the "Geniuses of Battle.net?"

1st: Skywing[vL]@USEast
Reason: Creator of BNLS.
Reason (In Depth): Revolutionized loading bots—created a system of connecting by which no hashes were needed and the average Joe could connect to Battle.net with ease.

2nd: Stealth@USEast
Reason: Creator of StealthBot.
Reason (In Depth): Revolutionized bots—created a universal bot that can be used by anyone; "One size fits all."

3rd: Spht@USEast
Reason: Creator of Eternal Chat.
Reason (In Depth): Creator of the first WCIII bot—made building clans very easy and managing them even easier.

4th: (U)@USEast
Reason: Creator of Clan (U).
Reason (In Depth): Brought on a new age of mapmaking—the age of the clans.

5th: (U)Bolt_Head@USEast
Reason: Brought new heights to mapmaking.
Reason (In Depth): Although self-explanatory, I feel obliged to explain without sucking up, because that is not my purpose. Bolt_Head brought insight and eagerness to mapmakers to achieve new heights and become the best they could be. The mapmaking world would not be what it is today without his workings and I doubt SEN, (U), aEp, Oo, Mp), or any other mapmaking clan would exist. In short, I believe he's the sole reason for the life of extracurricular mapmaking activities and exceeding what had already been achieved.
Addition: Props to Yoshi da Sniper for actually creating SEN.

6th: Mp)3D@USEast
Reason: For successfully enduring the most flame ever.
Reason (In Depth): I believe he's recieved more negative output than any other user on Starcraft, ever. I feel obliged to say that I'm sorry for him, but at the same time I feel a strong respect for his will to succeed and endure the pain of the negative output from others.

Heimdal, SI, General Mengsk

Isn't it obvious that these 3 people are the true revolutionaries of Map Making?

You're a B.net God. It's not the same.

Kinda like Yoshi here... But on Battle.net. I'm not sure if thats a good or a bad thing, though... :/

I was making fun of the people asking the Reps, why would the Reps know what Starforge is? Not the Reps themselves

ON TOPIC:

Who:l2k-Shadow
Reason: Created the l2uthless Ops
Reason (In Depth): Popular among warring clans, only map making clan that i know uses them for sure is Clan Mp, they are known for their flood and load protections and the WC3 Shaman Glitch, 12+ Shamans in a Clan Channel

lol I was being sarcastic. I don't think I've done much for bnet so much as just UMS mapping in general.

Who: Nanaki_XIII
Why: Created some of the earliest triple A UMS maps. Fate and Destiny, Final Fantasy, Mario Party... among others.

Too bad I can't remember exact map names.

Mannerless_@useast
ApeRaPe@useast
devilesk.@useast - for bringing joy to people's lives on bnet, and always creating conversation in a dead boring channel

You've done lots that I just remembered. All your terrain stuff, like the Badlands Brushes thing. Are you ever going to make more of thoes for other tilesets?

Not likely, since it didn't score high on my Final Project poll.

Who: DarkZeroX
Why: Toad's Turret D. Not an especially great map IMO, but I can't think of any others that have been as much of a disease to bnet as that. Except maybe Level Up Bound, or something...

Though I don't suppose that counts as genious so much...

Don't forget GoldenUrg.

Yeah GU was great. Early 1x1 tiled maps should devote their existence to him.

Ghost[Yoon]
Reason: Defense maps.
Reason (In Depth): I think this guy was a genious when it came to map making and defenses in particular. I mean now it seems so common to see defense maps, but back in the early days, "defense maps" were revolutionary. No one had really thought of taking regular units and having them just stand and attack hordes of enemy units until Ghost[Yoon] began releasing maps. And he's made tons of the original ones (i.e. Turret Defense, Lurker Defense, etc.).

So yeah, he gets my vote.

You're right, but I'm not sure if he deserves all the credit. I could be wrong, but I think there was a minor controversy over whether he actually made the original map himself or not. Same with Golden Urg and his chess map.

Even though I hate to say this biggrin.gif

MillenniumArmy

Even though his maps might not be the most complex, his concepts appeal to MANy people over battle.net and his maps are extremely popular. His maps are like the most played along with bounds and defense. He created many sports maps and they are very popular and there are clans devoted to some like Basketball.

How about ShadowFlare? He created SCMToolkit, WinMPQ, and lots of other MPQ-related things.

Well I know he didn't create the first defense ever - I forget that map maker's name but I remember the map well. It was a giant "U" and all you could do was build missile turrets. It was fun back when it came out.

I wonder who made the first defence and bound/obstacle.
I know defences have been around longer than me on b.net, and I once had an idea of an obstacle course, then I found one already made... Who decided to rename "Obstacles" to "Bounds" and put pictures in them?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DevliN on 2005-05-26 at 17:49:13
Well I know KckKryptonite made the first bound with "SnowBound." The term "bound" is actually quite appropriate for an obstacle course, but a lot of people who have made bounds don't realize that at all. As far as the first defense goes, I only remember the guy's name started with l3 but I can't remember the rest unfortunately.
