Staredit Network -> Ideas -> Commander

I'm kinda busy on making a different map, but until thats done, I was just thinking of discussing a map idea I had. Perhaps its already been done, but anyway, here it is:

You are a commander. A single unit. You are in a base. You don't have any other units under your control (other then a possible command assigning unit). and all you can do is direct your forces. And thats the genious of this map. Computer teams will be made to go to war against each other, and whoever wins depends on...well...the computer -_-'. But THATS where YOU come in. Your commander unit, though incapable of decimating entire bases by himself, DOES have the ability to command units, I.E. make them follow him, give them specific orders, and basically, attack like a real squad, where the leader has to keep himself alive, with the help of his squad. The reputation of the commander is what will help him improve. A higher reputation will grant him the following of higher ranked units, luckily, Starcraft already has a ranking system =P. So the entire game will focus on your micromanagement of the single squad you get. They can be replaced, like any other unit, but losing them will lower your reputation, which makes it all even more interesting...

I kinda have a few thoughts in mind at how to do this, but it's not all worked out, so I wanted to see if you guys could add on to it, or if anyone is willing to adopt the idea.

Oh, one more thing. Should this be multiplayer or singleplayer? It could be both.

Well the reputation portion is sort of being done in world of starcraft 3, and the whole "command the computer's units" thing HAS been done before somewhere I cannot currently recall. However, you can probably do a better job of the commanding computer units than whoever did it before, and your reputation system is fairly unique, as WoS3's isn't really all that similar, just the same name and a few similarities.
Some problems you will probably encounter
  • Micromanaging units not under your control requires a "virtual curser" which makes it highly unweildly
  • As the units increase in rank they don't necessarily get better, a ghost ranks higher than a marine yet is worse in straight combat (Modifying stats would fix this, but makes it loose the "feel" a bit)
  • If it is multiplayer, you're going to need a whole lot of computer players.

Virtual Curser: Yes, I know, its a downside. The units will be set to automatically defend the area they are at, but making specific commands may be a problem.

Rank: Units will be edited to make it so that they actually will be more effective as the rank goes up. For instance, a battlecruiser really shouldn't be so weak as to be taken down by 7 marines, thats just silly. Small stuff like this will be fixed.

Multiplayer: Oh god, don't even remind me... pinch.gif
