ive seen a map that was like 20x64 or something rediculous like that... and i want to make a map of similar size, but different content. and i tried it... with teh same dimensions, but it would just crash sc. any1 know why?
First of all, it must be divisable by 2. And you should try to use multiples of 2 as well.
Second of all, you need to play a normal map before you can play a game in the wierd map.
I dont suggest doing this though, it's pretty pointless.
You need to play a normal map before you play an odd dimensioned one? Why?
Otherwise it would crash...that's just how it is.
To sum it up, just make a 64x64 map. This way the size will be kept down to a minimum that will be stable no matter what. All you have to do is use null tiles to pretend it's smaller.
Panzy, I have the answer to your question. There is a working 20x256 map, called spider mine defence. However, it won't work if that is your first map you played all day, because Starcraft's engine has to just draw over the existing scenario, which won't work if you don't play on a regular sized map first. This is true in this new "Map Preview" feature a melee map has. After playing a UMS game filled with null, it will have trouble "drawing" the map on the map preiview screen, making it look like a messed up couple of lines.
You don't have to play another map before the map if one side is normal and the other side is 32 or 16. So you could have 32x64 or 256x16 perfectly. I'm not sure if it works the same on other sizes when paired up with a normal sized length.
This is odd, because I have made 20x64 maps and then I open SC and play it, it works (map size). I edit the map, play again, still works (doesn't crash).
Also, the maps size 1x6 works, I have done this before. 1 cannot be devided by 2, and it doesn't crash... unless you scroll past the bottom of the screen (when the map is smaller than the screen size, you can scroll forever in that direction. Such as if a map was 18x64 (2 tiles smaller than the width of the screen) you can scroll for ever to the right. same if its smaller than the hight. Both makes it so you can scroll all over)
Those 1x1 maps are pretty lame though.

1x1? I said 1x6. 1x1 works?
That cant be possible!!! Your screen cant shrink that small!

Why must it be divisable by 2? Your saying odd numbers don't work?

No they work. I personally have experienced problems with using odd numbers though.
so...your saying..EVERY NUMBER WORKS
Anything above 256 = crashing

No. Problems = crashing.

Instant crash for odd numbers? or like after you scroll the screen.
In fact now that i think about it I KNOW its not an instant crash because Starforge's old protection used to add 1 tile to the right side of the map (thus making the width odd). If having an odd dimension caused such catastrophic events then we would know about it.
Ive made a 50x50 map and loaded it about 15 times as my first map no problems. Ive done odd maps no problems. bolt is right even though i thought he left SEN right bolt
