Hi

It' probably not the right forum for this, but as all members of SEN that could be interested by this look here from time to time it should not be moved please.

63 Maps have been sent overall to the mapcontest. There are about 10 really crappy 10minutes maps, some other 10-15 that are just not ok balance wise or look too ugly to be considered, but the rest is fine and it will be hard to pick the best. Oh and one joker sent (4)Ashrigo and (4)Bone Canyon (old blizzard maps to be found in Oldladder) renamed to the mapcontest^^

There are much more 2 than 4 player maps in the contest, which is odd, as it is planed that only one 2-player and three 4-player should make the mappack. I am not allowed to post any images yet, even though I could use some independent opinions on some of them. I will show the 21 maps I liked most to my little brother, who is a very good player, he will help me with me decision. But remember that I am not the only one beeing in the jury. We have to send our ratings (we have 31points and can give any map 1 to 4 of these 31 points overall) till saturday, on sunday the admin will reduce the number of maps to be considered to 31. Officially, jury members like me only have consulting function and he decides, but I will try to make a difference there;)

I really don't get why ihatett did not send his natures manor or outlaw star, it would have had very good chances. trcc's maps are nice, but he will need much luck (with 15 other great 2 player maps, it is pretty much reduced to luck) to make the mappack with one of his. I would say cryptic islands has a real chance to make it, as the number of good 4player maps is not that big.

We'll know more next Sunday:)

I hope I may publish all maps after the contest is over, right now I am not allowed, so I won't do it.

Please tell us who that is. We have a right to know, since he tried to cheat, so his punishment should be everyone knowing who he is.

Oh crap, i just realized that the ver of Cryptic Islands that I gave you did not have the Map Description or Name completely finished! What do I do??

Well map will probably be slightly modified for the final mappack (observer triggers, "ESGL" in the Mapname, link to esgl page in description, fixing very simple mapbugs like the hatch that was left in hans-titans desert map), so that will be fixed for sure. With another map there were doodads taking away much of building space for one player. Should a maptester just ignore that, assuming that the doodads will be eliminated for the final version, or is it WYSIWYG. I will probably ignore the doodads and make sure they are eliminated in the official mappack.

I don't know who it was, probably nobody who had a known name in the community, or it was just a test to see if we were complete morons:)

Seeing as how you didn't even mention Haven, my map, I assume it was lost, but most likely it sucked too much to be mentioned. tongue.gif

But I made a ver. with smaller bases, but it's too late now. pinch.gif

Any news on Nonames or Hans-Titans maps? I expect them to get one in there.

I'll give you more information Sunday, as soon as I get more information myself. Right now I only have my personal opinion on the 63 maps sent, to I can't tell which ones are going to make it.

Thank you, thank you! It always nice to hear my maps are good!

Oh and about the 4-player maps: 4 player maps are insanely hard to balance, and harder to make.

I havent been around much lately: I've joined a clan, exams and stuff kept me from coming! I'm working on a new 4-player map, however!

Ok some information:

The map that got most point in the first round is a map that is absolutly unplayable, but of course we only judge by looking at pretty mapimages. sad.gif

cryptic island is ranked third in votes right now with 11, together with river of gods.
kingdom of zeres and newborn have 10points. Haven, ursad northror and gab dunes all have 8 points. My worst map has gotten 8 points too, some ppl just look at beautiful layout and dont play the game very often sad.gif

Well I can only say: Minerals to block access is really gay. I don't want to see that ever again in a map. Unit AI just can't handle it. I will try to make sure no map with this "feature " makes the cut. (btw the map that was ranked first and I found unplayable is one of those.)

But aren't the judges, like, good at this kind of thing? I'm sure they wouldn't just look at the image and go, "Pretty colorZ! Omg, I'm giving it all my points!"

Well first of all, its 63(!) maps. Secound, nobody want to be crash test dummy, so I end up playing vs computer sometimes to test maps. Some other maptesters are more into funmaps and terrain editing than playing melee, so they can't say more than "tanks can shoot there and there", well I think that's the same with some users here.

Right now I am optimistic it could be gab dunes, cryptic island, my airmap called mars attacks and one other 4player ground map you don't know. That would be my favorite mappack.

You entered ur own map into the contest? Isn't that like... not allowed for the judges? lol biggrin.gif

But dude, if the judges only look at the pictures and not actually play it to test mineral harvesting AI, then they're going to pick faulty maps, as you said they did for the first one. Cuz if i were the judge, what i'd do is edit the maps so you can place the ccs at the expansions with peons and test whether they harvest the minerals right.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Hans-Titan on 2005-06-06 at 10:26:22
I must say that too... Judges shouldn't be allowed to enter with their own maps. You dont see football judges judging games with their own country, do you? biggrin.gif

I don't see whats wrong with using minerals as a block - on maps like RoV and Requiem it just improves the map, and gives it a new dimension (at least on Requiem)!

Also when will we get the final result?

Can we have the current rankings? Please? biggrin.gif

Cryptic islands is better than Nonames and Hans-Titans???

We were supposed to submit maps? Or did you just pick them?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MillenniumArmy on 2005-06-06 at 20:53:22
It was a melee map making contest. We submit the maps, they pick the best ones

I don't think so, since the judging already started.

this whole thing sounds pretty..... "meh"

So once the maps become part of the mappack... what happens next? Would they just be sitting there in their ESGL map hall of fame page or would they actually be using these maps
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Panschk on 2005-06-07 at 04:34:03
I'm not allowed to judge my own maps. So it is quite a disadvantage for me, as there are only 4 instead of 5 judges who can give points to my maps. If it wasn't for me, no good four player airmap would have been in it. When I talked to the organisator of the whole thing, I understood the strategy with the maps better than before. First they pick the good and balanced LOOKING map, and minor bugs can still be fixed by the mapteam.
The ESGL Broodwar league is a Clanleague like BWCL or WGTCL, it is played in 4*1on1 and 1*2on2 mode thursday evening. The whole page is in german, so it is more an national thing. Right now there are ~20 teams registered, [FP] being one of them:)

@Yenku: Yes, I prefer Cryptic Island to almost every other map. It is really a nice map to play and to look at imho. Other judges might disagree though.

Next update should be today, the number of maps should be reduced to 13.

Ok. I guess we can agree to disagree. No offense to Millenium Army.
