Actualy, a better solution then using air units would be Dark Swarm or even Mind Control system.
Every so many points, the player gains a deathscore of an unused unit, and whenever deathscoreunused>0, it sets the Dark Archon to 5 energy(or however much it costs to Mind Control).
Also, though it would take a while to trigger, but would look better, is if the player has 1 death, DA has 2 energy(2 for MC), 2 gives 4, 3 gives 6, and so on, so that you can tell how many Mind Controls you have remaining.
Use unit-sprites that are stackable
