This may be somewhat offending, but I feel as though mapmaking is on the brink of death. Last summer Yoshi was making a Matrix map (Which I thought was going to be my favorite map) but now it isn't even remembered. Xeno was making a horror map (which seemed as though it would surpass even Bolt's map), but now it just faded away somewhere in Xeno's head. There were concepts and systems flowing in every day, and a new generation of maps which were armed with the latest concepts and inventions. Nowadays the focus on mapmaking is blurring, the seasonal competitions pretty much dropped and I don't really see many people on map night. Summer vacation has closed in and I thought that by now, everything will be just like last summer, but it stays the same. I believe that I can be proved wrong because a good amount of people haven't come out of summer yet, but I don't have my hopes up. What do you, the members of SEN, feel about this?
I've been after other ventures, such as programming, and such. Blizzards lack of attention for the map makers is partially to blame. They did host a mystery map competition, but it was for melee map makers only (we didnt have a melee divison back then, and UMS remains to be our strongest area).
It doesn't help that modding seems to be the fad at SEN right now.
I will finish my map! Doodle77 doesn't think I can do it. But I can!!!
Come june 15th. I have around a month of vacation at home becuase out trip to saratoga got canceled.
If I don't get to a certain stage then, I'll never forgive myself.
NEVER!!!
Umm, after the great depression, came the internet right???
So that means that map making won't die. It can't die!!! [/panic][/craziness]
The easiest solution is just to lead by example =/ make your own maps or whatever... in any case not everyone is on vacation, I still have another 3 weeks. Host your own competition, raise enthusiasm, don't just complain and ask other people to do it for you. It's up to the community to keep what it wants alive.
I never did make maps fast. Nothing changed. I still have a folder of 100+ scrapped map ideas.
Lately, I've been making melee maps. I guess I should go back to UMS maps now

Same here, I've never finished a map that was meant to be a game in my entire life.
And seeing as my motivation is ... what motivation?
That's pretty good, actually.
But I still wouldn't use that method. Instead I feed my ego until it's nice and fat.
Like CheeZe. Then I might open up Crimson Editor.

200+. pwnd
I'll be honest, I only make like the idea of a map, but never finished. But that one idea
does help the map making, because the people I show gives them an idea and they make a map and finish. But then you would say I don't ever do anything, I finish some maps... *coughfivecough*
Like I predicted, people make too many big announcements about some maps that THEY DON'T EVEN FINISH. Honestly people, you need to keep that ego in your pants and show it when it's complete... There were plenty of maps released by people some time ago, yet they were overshadowed by threads that had people impressed with maps that AREN'T EVEN FINISHED. Maps are primarily a personal thing. Sure people can comment here and there, but it seems that people here NEED a thread just to make a map on their own. So what I'm trying to say is, focus on why you make maps, not who you make it for. Pride only leads to disappointment, while happiness comes from mapmaking for enjoyment. So buy me waffles.
I never announce anything... I just say "Here is an idea. if I like it, I'll finish it."
The maps I do finish people (at least my friends and some people who test) seem to enjoy them; except I have a thing for making it confusing from lack of instructions... But i'll get over it...

That's what I meant, it is
close to the complete end of school, and many people are out already. I have tried to make competitions and such but I figured I would not be as much as an impact as say, Yoshi. I am not complaining I am just trying to warn everyone and maybe get it all back and running before it just.. dies...
This may be an already failed request but maybe you could hold a major summer competition with some unique incentive, I think that's just what all of mapmaking would need. Plus, I can't think of anyone more important on SEN than Yoshi himself, and I'm sure everyone else agrees so we all could bet on a lot of members entering.
With summitives, exams and everything else, this is the worst time to ask me to make a map. I'm sure I'm not the only one in this situation.
If people on SEN have any competetive genes at all, it'll be enough just to know they won. I don't think Yoshi has the time to host a competition.

I meant during this summer, and Yoshi has enough time to keep this site running, so why not a competition that would take maybe less than an hour or two. Not everyone is like you and why are you trying to put this idea down? Are you against SEN?
