Staredit Network -> Games -> ESRB Rating System
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Reever on 2005-06-18 at 20:23:15
ESRB has a rating system All ages, Early Childhood, Everyone, Teen, Mature, Adult(give or take a few).

Do you even look at the rating? I don't and the guys at my local Gamestop don't for me at least, but what about your parents do they care? Mine don't.

It doesnt really matter just cause they dont really sell A+ games there and mature is liek, nothing. So its not really matters or anything, but it works.
As long as I really pay attention to it, it works.
So far I play Mature/Teen.

Works? They're there for over-obsessive/lazy parents who don't want their children playing 'in-appropriate-material'. They 'work' just by being there. Their whole purpose is to tell you what the game's rating is.

My parent's just look at the ratings if there is nudity. Other than that they won't give a crap about E,T,M,A,RP

Its works to an extent. Many parents still buy thier kids games like GTA and then if thier kids shoot someone they blame the game and not themselves for buying it or for being abusive and isolating thier child. Wal-Mart cares about your age if you buy a game and so does EB games but that could just be b.c thier register has a little is the Customer 17? question lol. Its nice not needing my mom to buy games now for me but other wise the rating works and keeps video games from getting banned by people like Joe Liberman(Didn't spell his last name right I don't think.)

Personally, I don't think most parents give a censored.gif about the ESRB Ratings. My mom sort of gives a censored.gif about it. She looks for the age rating, but doesn't give a crap wants on it (i.e.Violence, Blood and Gore, Use of Drugs, Strong Language, etc.). But then again, she's too blind to even see the age rating. So she doesn't really care.

Just a thing though, you're right that Wal-Mart and EB Games care about the ratings, but it the employee is like 16 or 17, they don't really give a rat's ass.

I think its mostly ignored.

There are probably parents out there that think if they don't go buy a popular game, like a GTA, then their kids will just go out to their friends house and play it there all the time, so they might as well buy it.

True that, thats how I got my parents to buy my vice-city wink.gif

Everytime I go to Wal-Mart it is after midnight and I always get the same worker Wayne and at first he asked me for my proof of age but anymore he don't. Thats how it works now days.

I know of no store that asks for your age to buy a video game. Unless it's like PlayBoy Mansion, then I would understand.

The rating are a bit too strict too me. Why would Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 be Teen? But yea... whatever.

I think alot of parents think their child can play alot of high rated games without them going out and starting a gang war. (I hope you get my tone of voice.) But i dont think any parent could pass up an Adult rating.

Maybe that game has blood, gore, or language.

Question: What do you think parents feel about their children playing Adult games?

ALSO!

If you where a parent seeing your children playing these games... What would you do?

1. I dont think any parent would let their kid play that. If the parent didnt know about the ratings, the cashier person would be like... "errr..." Especially if it was an old granny getting it. tongue.gif I think the only time a child would get an A game the parent was a boozer.

2. I would run and shut off the TV, and ask him how he got this game, and then deal with that problem.

If they found out they would be really angry, consult the child's parent. Maybe ban the kid from that kid's house. Whatever!

Lets say the kid is somewhat of a "brat" and acts as the boss. You as the father, being sort of his "bitch" do whatever he tells you.

You then catch him playing an Adult game, you feel you should use your parenting instincts and stop him, but realizing you let him control you half his life makes you think about it.

What would be your answer then? What would you do?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by warhammer40000 on 2005-06-19 at 00:16:29
First off, i wouldnt be the kind of father that lets his kid control his life. And if he started to go crazy when i turned the TV off, then guess what.

I'd take off my belt.

We get BBFC (UK law) and PEGI (European 'guideline') classifications of games here. If you're trying to buy a game with a BBFC 18 rating, and you're not yet 18, you're commmitting a criminal offence in buying it, and the shopkeeper in selling it.

That said, I got San Andreas when I was 17 with no trouble.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Lithium on 2005-06-19 at 03:47:59
because EC, Everyone, Teen, and Mature doesnt really count on age. IF the child is scared by playing it, then thats a problem, they might be like "scared" of it until the correct age comes. Which comes into paranoidic defection which causes nerdity. Degrades to absolute idiocy and deformed brain, mostly failing grades and bad attitude, therefore ESRB = important.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by The_Shattered_moose on 2005-06-19 at 12:19:36
I think the ESRB rating systems pretty worthless because:
1. Half the games are misrated (raters missed content, play the game Brigandine if you don't believe me)
2. Any game that was rated in the past will have a stricter rating than one rated in the present, just like movie ratings.
3. Consol shooters can usually get away with a T, but computer shooters always are rated M.
4. The only parents who look at it are deranged and have already messed their children up enough. (I've got a friend whos 13, can't play T games)
5. The ratings are inconsistant (sometimes games with practically the same stuff in them get differn't ratings)
On the wal-mart thing, that kinda annoys me, I mean what right do they have to stop someone from purchasing a violent video game, its their parents responsablity, not the stores, to stop kids buying games.

I agree with Shatter, Also is this a game?

Starcraft used to be rated "Mature", now it's "Teen".
