Staredit Network -> Ideas -> New Conversation system

i had an idea when i sat down to think.... (hmm... strange closedeyes.gif ) anyway it was that a player could choose what their character could say and it would effect the gameplay. this could lead to hundreds of final outcomes! (Just means more work for me then disgust.gif ) like in the beginning you would walk up to a civilian and start to talk okay? any way their will be a pad in front of each person you can talk to so there will be no more running around to everyone and getting mad that you cant find the person. anyway then the map would center in a corner and give you four options. like for an example: (Sample conversation)
Civ: How are you?
You: (choices- good, bad, go away, or who cares)
You: Go away
Civ: well then, you'll get nothing from me.
the conversation would then end and you would not get to go on that quest.
Now if you choose good then you would have gotten the quest and then more stuff!
by the way to know what you are saying there will be civs by the talk choices, to tell you. I am going to incorporate this into my new map.

ADDITION:

I just found out that the conversation will be limited but will still work! just for only one choice per conversation.

It's been thought of before, and it's what makes a map truly an 'RPG.' The only problem is the string limit. If a conversation with a person has 4 choices, 4 responses, and 4 additional responses (Like in your example, he replies to you when you say 'go away'), that's 12 strings already. If you plan on using this throughout your map, you would probably hit the string limit.

no ok. What i meant was in the addition was that you still have 4 options just not four choices. Choices being a choice what you say. options being what you can say. You would only have 1 choice per conversation. Besides i heared somewhere that starcraft had a 1,500 string limt.... or was it 200? confused.gif ohh well i'll get there when i get there. And what do you mena that its been used before? Who where what map? Just need the info to see if I missed anyhting.

How are you doing today?
- I'm fine.
- Not too well.
- Go away!
- Who cares?
- - That's good to hear!
- - Oh well, feel better.
- - Well then, you'll get nothing from me!
- - So you wanna be rude? Fine.

That's 1 conversation, using 9 strings.

The string limit is 1024.

I never said it was used before (Even though it probably has been), I said it was thought of before. smile.gif
Actually, qPirateKing's demo on Deep Blue had a similar system with NPCs in Inns and stuff.

Actually, you can break the string limit using scmd2.
