There is no way in Hell thy're going to make a RTS play-mode for Halo 3. Begin a programer, I know that the graphic system in Halo 2 REQUIRES a 1st person view to limit the amount of stuff the player sees. Zooming out would be impossible for the current Halo graphics to comprehend, if what he claims is true and they won't be changing the graphics engine too much. You see, the graphics engine relies on you not seeing an extremely large amount of stuff. The engine deletes the details of anything you're not looking at.
Secondly, game consoles are not as powerful as everyone beleives. They are NOT top of the line technology. Even the XBox 360 could not handle an entire city of Covenant and Marines fighting. Take this from a programmer, this is exactly what I heard Halo 2 would be like. 'It's going to be free-lance, you can go anywhere, do anything.' It's all total crap. Anyone got on top of the building on 'Outskirts'? ANyone? Notice the HUGE expanse of grey nothing at the edges of the levels? The game depends on the player THINKING that there's more out there, but since the player's never going to see it, why actually put anything there? The game relies on 'conincidence' to found their gameplay. That you, a the player, were lucky enough to be right there at the right time. Enemies aren't always there, they're createc when you get close enough. In a large-scale battlefield, there would be no coincidence and it really would take away from the fun of it. It's rather hard to explain if you aren't a programmer yourself...
Anyway, it's all total crap. Bungie CANNOT do all those features. It's not a matter of impossiblility, you see if they put the time into it all it would be entirely possible, it's just that THERE ISN'T ENOUGH PROFIT TO BE MADE FOR THE AMOUNT OF TIME AND MONEY ALL THAT PROGARAMMING WOULD REQUIRE.
It's this man's hopes for Halo 3, it's not even close to reality. Yeah it would be great if Halo 3 had all those features, but it simply isn't plausible. Take it from a programmer, don't get your hopes up only to have them smashed.

I bet by RTS he means tactical view, like brothers in arms, where you could see a still areial image to plan.

It's not just the idea of it being an RTS, I mean the Halo 2 graphics engine is not made to handle arieal views unless they are Pre-rendered. The guy in the article claims there won't be any (or many) changes to the engine itself.
Plus, they wouldn't change the genre of the game that made it great...

Really the biggest wish I have for halo3 is that It allows Bots to be used in the game. Then that would be fun.... as hell.

It's sorta a hidden way to make you buy XBox Live...
I think they're going to keep that to force people to buy the 'Gold' version of Xbox Live for Xbox 360. (For those who don't know, all XBox 360's come equipped with Xbox Live 'Silver', whihc basically means you can get a few downloads and play games online during special events [every-other weekend is what they're proposing], 'Gold' means you get a wide range of other abilities [I forget them at the moment, friends list and stuff, I think] as well as unlimited online play, but it costs a monthly fee)

No you get friends list on Silver... So you can talk to your friends who have Xbox 360 as well
What I want in Halo3 is a more realistic HUD... I cant it to seem like you are in the helmet you know... Kinda like Republic Commando only mabe have it tinted a little orange? Also it would be cool if online you could use your flashlight and mabe have a heat sugnature view mode... PWNAGE
I also hope they let more people online in 1 game and mabe put some effort into haveing NO huge glitches... *SuperJunp*COUGH

Um, buy Chaos Theory. It's as good as Halo, in my opinion. And you can do heat signature vision
