Staredit Network -> Miscellaneous -> A Call for Maturity

Seriously people, grow the hell up. I like being eccentric now and then, in fact probably more often than I should, but enough's enough. Gay porn, spam threads, PMs with dumb requests, bnet idiocy... the list goes on. I know of course this is nothing new, but arn't we better than this?

And now with other people starting to make fun of this place in general... and myself for being here with it, I find the humor to be dwindling as I watch us getting carried away more and more each day.

Maybe I'm overeacting or missinterpretting, but I think this is not only starting to make us look bad, but also devolving the level of our behavior to something less than fitting of a professional map making site; one of the last that still exists in force to this day. Anyone who thinks SC's age or perceived "lack of activity" is a reason to continue this nonsense has no basis for argument, and should probably just leave anyway if that's the effect you're intent on accomplishing. Go bug the people over at W3 or something.

So let's cut it out with the idiocy for now and try to grow up a bit around here. Let's get some more 'real' things to discuss, and less of the usual popularity contests and personal issue threads I keep seeing. Sound cool?

Sure Jon Gordon, for a serious section of the forum. "Anything goes right?" So why care about this section? You know the phraze "there's a time and a place?" Try it out.

Are you referring to the garbage threads?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Trigonometry on 2005-07-03 at 02:06:27
I think he's refering to the "browny monster" comment. Don't take it to your heart, I'm not "making fun," I'm playing around. tongue.gif

This may be a garbage forum, but when I start seeing garbage spilling out of it elsewhere, I know it's time to take out the trash.</sorrymetaphor>

Let's just upgrade the quality of garbage here, for the time being at least.

Its a noble thought, tux, and I would have to agree; there is a lot of flaming that I see in the serious d. forum, but as for our friends with that frickin icky picture, this is just the attention they want. sad.gif its an abusive cycle really.

I still think this is one of the best communities, reguardless of its SC connections, on the internet. And as for the idiots of today, the mods handled it well and were pretty fast on it. *claps hands for elder folk*

I have yet flamed on this forum. Jibberish I post, yes. But realistically, casual conversation could be called "jibberish," considering it has no real point in the end.

Yeah, though it took them longer to get around to cleaning up those pics than I thought it should have, but they did do it eventually so I'm not complaining.

Actually, it's not the gay porn or any specific threads here that bug me. What's really bugging me is from a few personal conversations I've had showing how people are starting to think of SEN as a crappy place in general... and me for hanging out here.

As one of the last major sites for professional map making that's still alive and kicking, I don't really like hearing that. That's why I'm asking for you guys to try and cut and crap.

Maybe I just don't hang around here consistently enough to be used to this, but there's a line for everything and I think we've just about crossed it a few miles back.

I understand your fight against ignorance of the general public, I've fought about it for years. But here's the thing, be open to critisism. If anything it hurts the flame more than it helps it. Knowing the core you can target the weakness and pry it. Pretty much all you got to do is leave the flame open. And eventually it'll wear itself down. Did a teacher ever tell you to just ignore and not to give a reaction? There are exceptions that it doesn't work, but you know... Most the time it does.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2005-07-03 at 02:20:30
That barely made any sense, but no that's not what I'm refering to. Maybe it's just one or two people spreading shit around, but it seems to be enough to leave an impression. That's just how people are. And the only way to counter it is to discredit it, by not living up to those expectations.

Simple as that.

More you fight it, the more your you provoke it. But I guess it is better than taking it in the @$#. Well from what I see Staredit Network is high profile amongst the Battle.net/Starcraft community. While you have fans, you're going to have haters. Typically the people who hate you, have their loyalties else where. I bet easily you could find someone loyal to this who flames Campaign Creation. Actually I don't need to bet. I know at least one person, not of your administration, but someone loyal to this flames Campaign. And some others just have a destructive nature, and that's just what they do.

You can't fight people who are determined to be idiots, and frankly I don't want to. If they're going to be idiots, I'll let them be idiots. Meanwhile, I'm going to finish Rush, which by my calculations stands as probably the single most advanced and creative UMS map to date, bar none. We'll see what the idiots have to say, then. wink.gif

But that's just my ego talking. For this site in general, I'm gonna put it this way: It's not the specific misbehavings that's the issue at hand here. What's really going on is far more fundamental. Namely, people are starting to see this site, map making, and even Starcraft itself as a running joke, the longer this goes on. Now I'm not going to go into some bullshit topic about SC dying and whatnot, since I know that's not the case, but really you guys arn't helping by continuing this.

Of course, this is a game, and as such it should be to have fun, but it's also a community, regardless of what game it's based on, and by doing stuff that discredits it, all that's really happening is your attacking the community, which takes away from everyone's fun in the end.

See what I'm saying?

What I would have said if not for being lazy in short:
The more popular a place is, the more likely it is to get asses and idiots. The more asses and idiots it gets, the more asinine and idiotic the others get.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Trigonometry on 2005-07-03 at 02:45:53
Every game has it's decline. However I don't see it anytime soon in Starcraft. Let's see... It's been out for what? Around ten years, and still is popular. Even with Halo 2, that I love. I still play this. When I played other games, I played Starcraft. Playing Warcraft 3, I still played Starcraft, and the same with Infantry Online. More than anything, one of the problems is, people's inability to multitask their games, they're focused to one game at a time. With game release one after another, there's never time for a focused game player to make time for the good ol' games they like and use to play. The only thing that can kill Starcraft is Blizzard's recent idioicity. As some may know, some do. The original staff for Starcraft and Diablo/Diablo 2 for Blizzard, have left Blizzard, a long while back. And now are in the project Guild Wars.

A funny note on that. The ports to forward for Starcraft are 4000 and 6112, Guild Wars port range is 6112.

Which is why it becomes all the more important that the rest of us don't join that group, and instead try to be role models for everyone else.

From what I've seen, which, is pretty limited, the trouble really starts in the Off Topic/Other discussion areas and filters upwards. But maybe not. I don't know.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Trigonometry on 2005-07-03 at 02:52:00
If you ask me, you're lucky. Try the Ultima Online server "Legacy," nothing but a-holes, morons, idiots. Who think it's alright to harrass new players into leaving, by stalking and PKing anywhere you go. I don't think the whole role model bit really works. It didn't work there, didn't work in many other places. Like you said "if they're idiot determined, they won't change."
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2005-07-03 at 03:02:05
People who fight back with idiots give them a reason to exist, and that's when that kind of stuff goes on. If they already know they're being an idiot, and people continue to get angry, then they're getting their intended reaction, and thus justifying their existance. You just kick/ban them accordingly, no questions asked. They'll give up eventually, just so long as they arn't given room for a foothold.

But that's besides the point. I guess it's pretty useless of me to target everyone in general to shape up, so I'll just leave my outburst post alone for now. Meanwhile, I'm gonna get back to doing something productive, like hurrying to get Rush finished before I run out of time to do it (as I mentioned earlier).

Just try to take my advice about not letting people continue to throw poo.gif around here and elsewhere, and we should be fine.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Trigonometry on 2005-07-03 at 03:05:56
And just be glad you don't have to deal with the people from "Legacy" UO server.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by The_Shattered_moose on 2005-07-03 at 03:32:02
In my opinion the only way to deal with all the people against SEN is to prove them thoroughly wrong by redoubling our efforts to make excellent maps, like Tux said, we have better things to do than give these idiots reason to exist, after all, arn't we a mapping community? Ban the idiots quickly, and be remorseless, if they come back, either figure a better way than IP banning, or contact their ISP provider, basically we just need to stop taking all this crap about us being awful mappers when we really arn't.
Nota bene, if this post doesn't make sense, its because its 3:30 am where I am, and I need some sleep badly.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Trigonometry on 2005-07-03 at 03:33:45
The ultimate IP Ban counter!!!! DIAL UP! WOOT WOOT! LoL
You can't proove an opinion wrong. You can proove claims of fact wrong. But not opinions.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2005-07-03 at 04:21:19
If you're good enough, you don't need any of that. I've seen mods on other major forums deal with some of the worst people with only a few sentences and a minor slap on the wrist. They didn't even need to resort to banning, and sometimes the people involved even went on to become an active part of the community, instead of an enemy of it.
