You don't really need a floppy if you have a RW CD or DVD drive. I haven't even used a floppy drive for over 2 years now. And in the past 6 years, I haven't used it for anything other than making a boot disc, or transfering small documents from one computer to the next.

CD-RW is annoying(and slow in a very unsusual way...), and if you are like me, and you pick up random computers that people throw out, but barely need any fixing then you will find that very very few of them have CD-RW drives

Portable hard drive, yo! Got 2 of 'em. Great for backups and transporting loads of shit around.
Having your computer online and with a private ftp set up is also good for bouncing files around to different comps as needed.
I like that USB key idea, also.

portable hard drives are expensive, but i like USB keys, there is only one problem with them, windows 95 and 98 have no "USB Mass Storage Device" driver and so i need to get the driver over there on a floppy.
Floppy drives are most useful becasue you need them for backwards compatability.
