I just bought a new computer, but it doesn't have a floppy disc drive. Do you really need one? (For school or ANYTHING...)

Only if you deal with people who don't have CD-RW drives yet.

Depends on the age of your computer. I hear some new ones don't even have floppies.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by O)FaRTy1billion on 2005-07-04 at 02:17:18
Yeah, but the point of my story is that floppies saved some of my files. (I lost everything but maps and my Green Dark Archons)

My dad has a laptop and he can transport all the files of the old ones and keep it on the comp until we reformat it, then we transport them back...

Foppy discs are going extinct. Nohardly uses them. The USB keys are getting cheaper and cheaper so why not use them. My computers are not new enough to not havea floppy drive though. Although my very old computer had the slots of the actually floppy disc.

You don't really need a floppy if you have a RW CD or DVD drive. I haven't even used a floppy drive for over 2 years now. And in the past 6 years, I haven't used it for anything other than making a boot disc, or transfering small documents from one computer to the next.

My laptop doesn't have a floppy drive, I use CD-RWs. Lots of CD-RWs.

That too, I use a flash drive that can hold up to 1GB of information.

My comp could only run in SafeMode, meaning most of these programs would not work. Also, after I got a few of my files couldn't even get on SafeMode...
And we could not reformat it...

... Can you burn CDs on SafeMode that is slower than a snail trying to climb a 50 foot wall?

Portable hard drive, yo! Got 2 of 'em. Great for backups and transporting loads of shit around.

Having your computer online and with a private ftp set up is also good for bouncing files around to different comps as needed.

I like that USB key idea, also.

speaking of USB keys to store data, they should make one for games. Like instead of cd's you put the key in and install lol.

CD-RW is annoying(and slow in a very unsusual way...), and if you are like me, and you pick up random computers that people throw out, but barely need any fixing then you will find that very very few of them have CD-RW drives

portable hard drives are expensive, but i like USB keys, there is only one problem with them, windows 95 and 98 have no "USB Mass Storage Device" driver and so i need to get the driver over there on a floppy.

Floppy drives are most useful becasue you need them for backwards compatability. wink.gif

Mine came with a mini-cd with the drivers. I can also find the drivers on the internet if I lose that CD.
