I want to settle this whole thing out. Which do you think is more difficult to do - make a UMS map or a melee map? I won't post my opinion here until I see some of your's.
Ums is harder. its s simple fact. every great meele map has great terrain, as a great uma map ahs great terrain and triggers, stacked names, tricks, and chances are in my opinion more fun.
UMS wins by far. It's in a different league for christ sake. The melee side will try to say that their about even, cause they know that's about as far they can go. I seriously laugh whenever someone says that melee is harder, cause they get like the best melee maps, and they compare them to some of the worst ums maps, instead of comparing it to the best ums maps. Which easily bitch slap melee maps. Not saying they're BETTER, just saying they're HARDER TO MAKE. that's all. Better is really abstract, while harder to make is a lil bit more concrete.
You act as if we didn't take that into consideration when we said those things. Trust me, we did.
This is a lot like comparing the bass to the lead guitar, and telling me that the bass is harder to play.
Not at all... you clearly didn't read the whole thread.
It depends.
2 GOOD Maps
UMS
-Pretty good terrain
-Masses of special effects
-huge amounts of advanced triggers
-A good amount of testing
Melee
-Extremely good terrain
-Massive balencing issues
Thats pretty much it, now dont say OMG UMS HAS 4 AND MELEE HAS 2!!!11 But add the difficulty of each together, and see what you think.
I think UMS is a bit harder, but of course I couldnt make a melee map for my life. It all depends..
Felagund, you can't even begin to say this has any say on what is more difficult. This is a UMS MAPMAKING SITE, try going on to TeamLiquid or TeamAreola and ask them this and they will laugh in your face at your stupidity to compare them. They are both completely different and shouldn't even be compared together. 95%+ of SEN people haven't attempted a melee map. Deathknight and Tux Temp have said themselves that melee mapmaking is more difficult.
As someone who has made both in the past, I find it so much more difficult to make a good melee map than a good UMS map. Don't say you can just throw a bunch of terrain and minerals together and have a melee map, you have to balance it to all 9 possible race matchups and to all units and strategies. Don't say that the UMS mapmaking community is bigger, because the melee mapmaking community is MUCH, MUCH bigger.
UMS.. duh. On melee, all you do is add start locations, resouces and some random terrain you thought of. On UMS, it would take forever on triggers, you have to do the briefings, terrain... dont matter it could be the same as melee, also sometimes repeating triggers, but changing the trigger's player's position.
You're right. It has no say yet because no one has really said anything. It's funny how you use nothing but other people's arguments. Who cares if the melee mapping community is much larger? That does not pertain in any way to the difficulty of either type of map. And while most of SEN's members are UMS mappers, it is a mapping site, dedicated to neither. And personally I scoff at the idea of people getting paid to play games. I watched a documentary where a Korean "pro" trained 10 hours a day on Starcraft. That made me sick to my stomach. This is a game, and they're wasting good money on people playing games.
You answered the question, I guess, but you also went wayyy off topic. Keep on topic people! Give reasons for either side.
You can try convincing them, but neither side won't budge. And it'll turn into a flame war. Then all hell will break loose. I'm going to remain neutral, that melee and UMS can't be compared in which is harder.

You went further off topic than me if you want to be a comparison freak... I would train on Starcraft many hours a day if I got paid for it too... in a way it kind of relates to sports, however, I don't see why you created this thread, there has already been a 12 page thread about this, just about everything needed to be said has been said, this is just going to turn into a flame war.
I'd like to say it's equal, but I'm enjoying Melee more at this time

It has more depth. The whole of UMS is just noob right now.

Do you actually think that?

Furg: how can you scoff at that? Do you scoff at golf? If there is a market for it, let them be paid. It's no less fun watching Reach vs. Iloveoov than it is a baseball game (actually, much more fun than baseball).
I'll repeat. If you're going to quote me, you need quotation marks. And I want my name to be lightblue (that'd be Sir_Fela_the_Wise) and italicized too.
Nice job talking about something totally irrelevant and avoiding everything that asked/said and going completely off topic.
He actually thinks he's clever.
Actually Ultimo was right. I'll never change any minds. *sighs* And neither will you, but there's actually a reason for that.

I still want you to change your signature to my specifications ihatett.
