The true meaning of Hack(related):
QUOTE(http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=hack)
Informal. To alter (a computer program): hacked her text editor to read HTML.

Examples:
Penguin Plug is a hack.
Tuxedo-Templar's maps are hacks.
My keyboard driver is a hack.

Hacker:
QUOTE(http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=hacker)
One who is proficient at using or programming a computer; a computer buff.
--
One who uses programming skills to gain illegal access to a computer network or file.
--
One who enthusiastically pursues a game or sport: a weekend tennis hacker.

Examples:
Devilesk is a hacker.
Everyone on SEN are hackers.

Hacking:
QUOTE(http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=hacking)
Same as "hack".

I did not say I supported anything, I just merely posted a definition that says we're all hackers. It's just different. Post whatever.

I agree with those definitions to an extent. A CRACKER is one who is doing the illegal and bad stuff.

Hacking is not bad. Cracking is.

It's just that those definitions are completely different from what we use to describe certain people.

I'm a proud hacker of many programming languages. smile.gif

I'm aware of these meanings, but soceity warped them. If I call this a community of hackers, it is true, but not into the extreme of causing trouble or damage.

Yes Deathknight, but this is where "Slang" comes in. We don't really use that term for those definitions.. I mean when we edit maps someone else doesnt say OMFG HAX0R. Yes I know you weren't saying that, but the definition of "hack" is greatly altered now.

So... by you saying "cracker" is equal to "racist remarks" if you do not know what is a "cracker" lets leave it like that!

What?

Anyone who has any knowledge of the internet, knows the difference between the two.

And if you don't. It's a good time to find out.

My definitions:

Hacker: Someone who changes any aspect of any program or uses a program to change the aspect of another.

All mapmakers and modmakers are hackers.

Cracker: Someone who enters a place with unauthorized permission to steal information.

People who open protected maps are crackers.

If your standards are incredibly low, yes, SENers are hackers. But to me, being proficient means you can do just about anything if you were asked to do it. Just because you can work within an incredibly simplistic program, doesn't mean you're much of a hacker.
QUOTE
One who uses programming skills to gain illegal access to a computer network or file.

This is the only definition I use, because the rest are fairly worthless. It's actually worth mentioning in conversation. Not, "95% of the teenage population can work within PS so they must be proficient hackers".
QUOTE
One who enthusiastically pursues a game or sport: a weekend tennis hacker.

More worthless garbage used by people who need another catchy word.

Seriously, if you use StarForge or anything like that, it doesn't make you proficient in hacking. Maybe the people who made StarForge are, but certainly not someone who just works within it.

That's not true. Heim just knows how SC is made, and programming isn't hard at all.

Doesn't that prove my point then... that the first definition is totally worthless?

I don't care about the real definition of "hacker". I know damn well what it really is, I just don't use that because it's stupid. Maybe I should create a new term called, "abusive hacker" how about that? It would include all the malicious hacks used to give unfair advantages during gameplay, helpful programs such as PP and Tux's maps and all that will not be part of it. That way people won't be complaining and whining about OH BUT UR A HAX0RZ TOO!! When they know damn well what the other person means. Really, pointing out that PP or Tux's maps are hacking when people clearly know that the person is talking about hacks that give an unfair advantage is just being a nitpick and an idiot.

If you go to ICL and whine about the true definition of "hack" they'll just flame you and say go away and tell you their definition of hack which is what they accept.

Also who says that dictionary actually sets the meaning of the words? tongue.gif

Dictionaries don't create meanings of words, they just try to simply describe the meanings that we and society give them. Humans created language, and definitions change over time.
