I'm wondering if anyone knows any games that have particularly new and interesting plots. This would include games like Eternal Darkness or Beyond Good & Evil.
What I don't want are Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy games mentioned. These have too many cliches and the only reason the plot is justified is because of good graphics and decent gameplay.
I'm talking about games that have stories that are like books. They aren't half-assed or shoddy. So if you think you know any that meet my standards, shoot.
You can't just block out Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Soild, MGS is very political and has a lot of cutscenes for the giant plot and make it seem like a movie, a really good one, and you would only block it out because it's so popular, if MGS1 came out a week ago you would've mentioned it. But for Final Fantasy I give props to FFX for making a huge world that really felt like you were in it. Other then that I would say God of War, sort of. I haven't played many games where the plot is a major part, well KOTOR has a pretty big plot but the 1st one got kind of stupid at a point when you find out who you are.
EDIT: I haven't played it but my friend said Killer 7 had a really good plot.
Okage has a nice twist in the middle and I love the conversations in the game (always picking on Ari) though this game is VERY OLD it's still nice to mention.
Lunar: Silver star story complete. An absolutly awesome game, with well written (and often hilarious) dialogue. The storyline is fairly standard, but its all the little stuff that makes it worth playing, make sure to get the complete edition too, as that one has anime cutscenes, updated voice acting, and is generally better (Not that I expect anyone to get their hands on the origional, seeing as its for the sega genisis) Of, and its for playstation.
I really don't see the point MGS has to make. On one hand, it tries to be realistic by using stealth tactics, but then you see movies of people dodging bullets, a black man naked in the snow, cloned people, etc. If it's going to be unrealistic, just let it stay, but lose the realistic style. What's the point of researching old war documents like the Cold War and stuff, when you have cyborg ninjas and genetically enhanced people? So no, I would block it out because it tries to be realistic with historical events, but then adds fantasy things like Psycho Mantis, matrix effects... That's my beef. But remember, opinions are never right, and that would include you as well.
Thank you for mentioning Killer 7. That seems to be the game that fufills my criteria. Though it isn't realistic, it doesn't try to be. There are supernatural elements and the graphics make it something other than life.
Revelade, you do realize the reason they had to research stuff like that without the supposed cyborg ninjas is since MGS3 took place BEFORE MGS1 and MGS2.That is the reason. MGS1 and MGS2 are more geared to a sci-fi realistic, but MGS3 is more suited to survival and realistic. Though, very hard to have perfect realisticness without sacrificing gameplay.
I only play MGS for the story, I have no idea where you get this bs about cliche's in it.

The fact is that MGS is, never was, and never will be "realistic". You can get all your historical information, but it won't change a thing.
What I mean cliche is you have a good guy whos a badass who doesn't have any real weakness and can take down tanks, helicopters and even giant mechs. Sound familiar? Hmm... Terminator, Splinter Cell, Psi-Ops... The story doesn't have the level of depth that Final Fantasy has. At least other games like Zelda or FF games have people with emotion, none of that hard, gruff, statuelike personalities...
