This is my first official UMS map making contest so bare with me.
Rules- The map must be based off an old school game (like NES or Atari games, etc - before 1994 is fine).
- It cannot be an already started map (sorry!)
- You can only enter in one map
- It cannot be an already made map
- You cannot judge
- No teams
Scoring- 10 points for terrain and gameplay (if the map looks good and has no bugs)
- 10 points for conformity (the map feels and runs like the game the better)
- 10 points for complexity (I'm not looking for a hack 'n slash or shooter game - think puzzle games and what not)
- Games like Tetris, Bubble Bobble, 1943 - R-Type - Gradius, and Rampart are what I'm looking for.
- 10 points for a point system (I want people to be able to compare scores easily and see who is better at the game)
- 10 points for continuity (the longer the game can go the better, this includes replayability)
- 5 points for interface (the game must be relatively easy and simple to control and play)
- 5 points for mutiplayer support (the better mutiplayer gameplay is the more the points)
- 60 points is the grand total!
Prizes- Must have a Paypal account to win, I'll reconsider snail-mailing money if not many people can get a Paypal account (but I wont re-send the money if it gets lost in the mail or stolen along the way - thats why I want to use Paypal).
- The maps will be put in the featured maps section of the DLDB and map spotlight.
- $30 First prize!!!
- $20 Second prize!!
- $10 Third prize!
Deadline- All entries must be sent by September 6th. I may extend this.
Entries- Must be sent to me via PM, email (chuiu @ cox dot net), or instant messenger.
- You must tell me exactly what game you're doing and what system it's for.
Judging- There will be a total of six judges including myself. PM me if you want to judge but I wont guarantee that the first few people to PM me get in. I will be screening the judges to make sure not just anyone gets through.
- You cannot make a map and judge
- chuOS
- Mini Moose 2707
- Terrenblade
- DT_Battlekruser
- Moogle
- ShadowBrood
Money...*drools* Very good incentive to people to makes maps. Count me in

is SNES old school? or Gameboy Color or Game Gear? o_O maybe even Sega?
Anything 1993 and earlier is fine.
Wait, You can't judge and enter at same time can you?
Not sure If I'd like to make a map =\
Edit: Can I secede from judging If I decide to make a map (That is if I get accepted)
When's the deadline for new people, or just entries? (Sept 6 I know, but when do you stop the flow of people saying they join, or do you just judge what's sent?)
Reply edit: Okay, I most likely will want to judge. I have a project anyway.
PS: Where'd your 'i' go?
I've already recieved some PM's regarding judging. I'll most likely post the judges on thursday.
EDIT: You have to choose by the end of the week if you're going to make a map or judge. I'm not going to juggle people around because they're indecisive.

Uh ... that both doesn't belong here and doesn't concern me. I didn't host that tournament so I have no idea.
To clear some things up for those who can't tell already. The map must be made from a game that exists, if I cant find it then you cant enter it.
I think I'll make a Megami Tensei map. Akemi Nakajima rush!

I refuse to judge melee maps in an UMS contest. I judged all of them otherwise so it's not my fault

Can I make a map based on Dune 2? It was released in 1992, before 1993 as you've stated, though it's a strategy game so I'll rather be sure before I start mapping.

It's been done, I think. Played it a long time ago.
I've made tons of games like these already

I don't see why you couldn't.
i got dibs on bust a move!
This sucks. I had a new contest all lined up for ya'll, and it would have been perfect with the recent ToG discovery as of late. It's not a FFA mapping contest, but rather a new theme entirely that may appeal to more than just the elite UMS map makers around here. I might still do it seperately, but I don't want it and this to conflict, even though I don't think they will too badly due to the nature of its theme.
Well anyway, I wouldn't mind being a judge, if you need. I think you should revise your grading system a bit, though. You need to factor seperately things like terrain quality, overall polish (is it bug free?), fun factor (big one), replayability (the correct word for continuity), interface (controls and handling, which could replace conformity), and depth (which encompasses both complexity and duration, as you could have a linear one track gameplay in 5 minutes using a hugely complex set of triggers and be able to call that complex).
I've done like 4 contests in the past, though 2 of which didn't recieve high turnout, so I've had time to learn how things work with them. In general though, maps will be rated more or less by 'feel' than by specific points, except in the cases of close ties and such, which is probably the better method of doing it so it judges quickly and keeps the contestants comfortable.
Are we aloud to use Ex. Triggers?
