Staredit Network -> Games -> Are FPS games repetitive?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Revelade on 2005-08-06 at 11:59:01
Well, the only FPS games that I have this generation were Time Splitters 2 and Future Perfect. Everytime my friends and I do multiplayer, it becomes pretty boring after a while. Shoot, die, respawn, and that seems to be the pattern. I don't know why PD and Goldeneye seem better than this. Perhaps it could be their superior storylines? Or maybe it's that when you died, you actually felt bad?

I look to FPS on the PC and I see fun here, but on consoles, not much. Keep in mind I am NOT talking about Halo 2, since I have never played it online, nor have I played it much offline multiplayer.

No, no, no
Halo 2 is much better than all the rest, and here's why:

The game starts, oh look, there's the flag. This should be easy enough, our entire team is all together, we'll just blow them away. Say, there's a Blue Fuzzy Spider on your head, dude. *BOOM*

Alright, so that didn't go too well. Hey! They have our flag. *SHooting at the Flag Guy* Hey, doesn't that guy over there have a snipe-*headshot* X 4

Okay, okay. So they capped our flag once, big deal. We got rockets. Oh, nevermind. Man that sniper's owning us. So what should I do now? *Smacked in the back*

Okay, less thinking, more shooting! *headshot*

Charge!! *Rocket Owned*

Fire!!! *censored.gif Comboed*

Crud, they have our flag again. Um, let's try something different. *Smacked in the back*

I thought I said less thinking, more shooting!! *Headshot*

SCREW THIS!!! *Quits game*

are u kidding me? FPS Games are the most unrepatitive games of all, i'd say the most repetative are RPGS,MMO's but ppl still love those games..... hmm well still some FPS shooters out there do get repetitive, but not most closedeyes.gif

I think exactly the oppisite. How many WWII Vietnam FPSs are there? HUNDREADS. Halo, eh that was newish. Tom Clancey is the same thing each time. And MMORPGS are not repeative. Star Wars Galaxies and World of Warcraft, MAN THEY'RE SO SIMULAR. ONE HAS GOBLINS AND ELVES THE OTHER HAS WOOKIES AND YODAS THEY'RE LIKE THE SAME THING!!
How about those Guild Wars it's almost exactly like SWG and WoW yeah except the gameplay is completely different in almost every way.

After playing F.E.A.R. no. The AI is way too smart for the game to be repetative.

I didn't know F.E.A.R. was being made on the consoles, which one, Revolution, PS3 or the Xbox 360??

I can't access it objectively, since I'm kinda biast, playing Counter-Strike alot, and I don't personally like Halo 2. I need to play it online, and I think I'll probably like it. But, the concept of FPS is sort of getting worn out. Similar to all those MMORPGs. o_O

I don't know... if there are like 30 different weapons to use, and different types of soldiers, it isn't that repetitive. MMOs on the other hand are about leveling up and most RPGs are very linear. I think the most repetitive type of game would have to be... dare I say it... driving? There is nothing quite as satisfying as successfully defending a German bunker against seven or eight British on the Rocket map all by yourself. Fire fights can get quite hectic, and since every single online unit has the AI of a human brain (actually quite intelligent sometimes), there are new tactics every game. Generic shooters like Halo don't really capture that though. Woohoo! Another rocket server! tongue.gif

Driving fricking owns. The courses are different, all the cars handle differently with different top speeds, different acceleration rates and different LOOKS!

Burnout was the only one I liked. Along with Mario Kart series.
The most repetative genre today is probably RPG/platformer.

With the exception of Mario games, nearly all platformers look EXACTLY the same. Just different characters.

There are only a few good FPS that stand out from the huge pile of crap.

I, personally, am anticipating the chance to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadows of Chernobyl.

ADDITION:
On the PC! HAH! Suckers!

Console shooters are all terrible, with the possible execption of goldeneye for N64, which was half decent. Controllers just arn't well adapted to fps, enough said.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by CaptainWill on 2005-08-16 at 16:54:39
I've always thought that consoles are well-adapted to (simpler) shooters, you just need to get used to using a controller.

If you tried to play a game like America's Army on a console though, you'd be screwed.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2005-08-16 at 17:45:40
Not enough buttons on consoles. There is a lot more flexibility to have in-depth commands and controls on the PC. If a console does use a keyboard and mouse, then it's really no different from a PC.

I just found out that XBox Live costs like $50. Now who the Hell would pay $50 for such a service? ranting.gif

*Edit* That's what my friend told me, but apparently it's in truth $50 a year.
