Does anyone else find it annoying as Hell that so many people don't understand that whether the word "defense" is spelled with a 'c' or an 's' depends on where you live, and think that it's universal?
I know there were some other words that this happens with(just not as often), but I can't remember them...

CODE
de·fence   Audio pronunciation of "Defence" ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (d-fns)
n. & v. Chiefly British

   Variant of defense.

Defense = American Standard English
Defence = Standard English

The pronunciation is also different.

In Britain, it's 'de-fence,' with a little more stress on the second syllable, while in America it's 'DE-fence,' with much stress on the first syllable. We do say 'Defensive' rather than 'Defencive' though, so we're just inconsistent in our grammar rules. You can thank Webster for making American Standard English have more consistent rules of grammar (I still like Standard English better though tongue.gif )

There's also the matter of 'Offence' and 'Offense,' which have the same differences in Britain and America as Defense/Defence.

If you're britian, it's your problem, if you're american, you also have a problem. Either way, it doesn't matter to me.

Yea if we look how americans use completely different units of measure than the rest of the world. I never understand why. Meter, kilogram, litre and C°, what was so bad with these that they had to invent the other ones?

The americans use the imperial system. We use the metric. The americans are old -.- We used to use the same system as the americans.

We as in Canada

C° is for Canadians, F° is for Americans. Americans doesn't use the words with 'our' on it.

That's interesting. I find I say it both ways depending on what I'm saying. More commonly I say defence and not dee-fence.

I think we have bigger grammar and spelling issues in maps today than defense vs defence, such as "Mareens" and "Gardiens".
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MapUnprotector on 2005-08-07 at 17:06:09
I prefer the s to the c wink.gif

And for the pronunciation I see we do use more emphasis on the DE in defense, but at some times I use de-fense, not DE-fence. Like for example "You need more de-fense in your base" To me it's awkward to say DE-fense in that type of sentence, though I'm inconsistent like that. Both I think I use interchangeably.

EDIT: Actually I would say DE-fense in "You need more defense in your base".

As for defensive and defencive, I think I say de instead of DE, no matter what :/

Especially when people go out of their way to mispell renamed units. From 'Zerg Guardian' to 'Gardien'.

...We didn't because we were seperated far from each other and made up the languages differently. (America was seperated from Britan, and the English language was still forming. So America didn't know how everyone else was doing it, they're on another continent!)

Common sense!

Ya, but why couldn't we have re-synchronized?

As for making America switch from Standard to Metric, I heard it would cost A LOT of money, and things like machinery would have to be replaced or converted. Also people who don't no metric would have to either learn or lose their job.

'our' > 'or'

's' > 'c' (Most cases, Defense, Offense, both vary in the way it's pronounced)

I thinks its my yearning to be scottish. smile.gif
