Staredit Network -> Portal News -> No more EUDenabler
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yoshi da Sniper on 2005-08-16 at 14:00:38
Sorry guys. This is one decision you're all going to hate me for.

It took me a long time to decide this, and I've decided to remove the EUDenabler and not support it at this website. Hear me out for my reasons:

EUDenabler violates the EULA, you are correct. So do a lot of other programs we host here as well. The biggest difference between them, is EUDenabler has immediate effect on how you play online. It's a game that actively changes your online experience while you play. Something like Proedit or SCMtoolkit wont enable users to run malicious code on other peoples machines.

You might say, "I use it only for fun, and it doesn't hurt anyone". Someone may say the same about any of the hacks being used out there. Blizzard may very well come down upon this program and punish those who use it, because it can open up your computer to things that Blizzard obviously doesn't want, or they wouldn't of been so quick to release a patch.

For all those who say "Viruses are impossible", hey, I didn't make the game and neither did you. A lot of things seem impossible. The music industry thought nothing like mp3s would happen, but it did.

Bottom line is, I'm not supporting anything that has the possibility of executing malicious code - even if it has the proper warnings. I made this website intending it for safe and fun map making, not going to the extremes such as this. I really don't want to be responsible for any ignorant people using this program and being punished, if not from blizzard or a "virus map".

Sorry, but any future links to this program will be deleted. I apologize to Heimdal and the other EUD explorers, but EUD triggers died with patch 1.13b. Bringing them back is only asking for trouble. It is a extremely big security risk, more than any of you think.

I know people are going to leave here and try to continue this elsewhere, but I'm concerned here for the safety of your computers. It is not worth the risk of having your computer totally messed up just to have 5 units fire seeker spores.

It's ok.

Well, people are gonna be disappointed, maybe even angry. But I guess it's a good choice, we wouldn't wanna end up with viruses on our computers tongue.gif. Lucky for me, I never dled the eudenabler, never got my hopes up smile.gif.

You had to use your best judgment on this Yoshi. I do not blame you, nor should anyone else. This is your decision, and everyone involved knew of the risks, and they knew that this was a possibility, even if it was listed or debated on. Either way life will go on. It's not like we have always had this, and this could have been bad for us downloading malicious software onto our computers. But unlike people who have priorities above this, we would be the only ones who mourn for our los if we got anything bad on our computers. You made the right choice, even at the risk of angering people. I stand by your decision.

Well they should not be. Disappointed perhaps, but not angry with Yoshi. Like Blizzard, Yoshi too must look out for his own safety, as well as ours. His judgment is sound, and he makes a good argument.

Trust me, it took a lot of thinking for me to decide this. People will be angry, and attempt to explore this elsewhere, but they will realize how much of a potential for danger this actually is. The second EUD maps become successful, is the second that people start releasing viruses.

Yeah we shouldn't be mad though, Yoshi made a good desicion and anyways, at least we enjoyed it when it lasted tongue.gif

I don't think the program's dead.
I think it's too cool of a program for it to disapear like that.

ADDITION: Awsome! Ezday2 changed my avatar again.

Nice job Ezday!

The program isn't dead because some people dled it, but they can use it at their own risk if they want to use it ohmy.gif

I didn't say it would die off because I said so. I know people will try to continue it elsewhere (and those webmasters will likely not evaluate the risks like I have, and welcome new users). If I lose people off this website, thats a small price to pay.

If I PM people asking for them to send it to me via email, would I get in trouble?

Theres people who don't even care about EUD though blink.gif

Well at least now there's no double standard regarding this, HanStar, Penguin Plug, etc.

Personally, I think that SEN should support HanStar, Penguin Plug and the EUD enabler.

I wonder if DK agrees with me.

Penguin Plug and those other programs we host don't appear to have any way of executing anything that can damage your computer. Plus, they weren't really designed to override patches or whatever.

Whats "HanStar"?

Question:

If the EUD Enabler is so risky, and Blizzard knows about it. Couldn't they possibly just tell us what it can do, and why we shouldn't use it? (This may be a dumb question.)

But, in my opinion, if they want us to not use EUD's they should give us a reason or an explanation. To me, it's like taking a child's toy away and just telling the child it's dangerous. If you do that, you leave the child in question, allowing the child's curiosity to wonder. Which is FAR WORSE than giving explanations for what it can do.

I think HanStar is for Korean text.

Yes, it would be possible to modify the code, preventing any viruses from executing. But we can't prevent it if we don't know how it works.

Or that it works at all.

Can we even confirm that someone indeed sent Blizzard a virus map?
