Staredit Network -> Miscellaneous -> How to overcome laziness?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Shapechanger on 2005-08-17 at 22:42:06
I know most of you probably don't care, so shut up and go away, but I am extrmely lazy. But it's odd because at school I'm extremely productive. The second school ends, I forget about all my homework and go play games. Last year I barely passed, and now that I'm a freshman my grades are going to start counting. I really want to know if anyone has a solution for this.

I am far more lazy than you probably think.
I can remember the homework and say 'I should be doing this, turn off the damn XBox and get to work', but I just don't do it. Even when my parents get on me, I'll act like I'm doing it for a while, but then just show them some year-old assignment and get back to games. As soon as I return to school I'm thinking 'Crap! I didn't do my homework!' and I work my ass off on the bus and before school, but I can't get it all done in 20 minutes.

I desperately need a solution.
I fear if I don't get my ass back into gear I'm going to fail and ruin my life.

If you're just going to day something stupid or insulting, do me a favor and just go away. Only post if you actually want to help.

Set your room on fire. Go into hiatus. Don't go straight home, go to the park or study at a friend's or do it all five minutes before class starts.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Shapechanger on 2005-08-17 at 22:46:34
No friends, but the park would be a good idea, I suppose...
Stress and lack of sleep probably have a lot to do with it. But once again, I can't prevent myself froms staying up until midnight.

I lack any willpower.

I suspect that I am, literally, insane...

School isn't as relevant as most people think of it, but work ethic is very important to have. The reason you'll want to play video games is because they're simply fun, and doing work is not. Without an immediate consequencef for not doing your homework, you're going to play video games. My suggestion: have your mother buy your favorite food. If you do your homework, you get the food. If not.. no food for you. Positive reinforcement is very effective, but I dunno how this one would work out.

But, like said above, I can't stop myself from faking it and showing her an older assignment.

What I need is a method to attain willpower. I have tried medatating, it didn't help.

How about when you get an assignment, show it to here so she can see it blank, then get the food by showing her it, finished? Duh.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Shapechanger on 2005-08-17 at 23:08:04
I don't know if I would do it. I'll try, though.

Dude you sound like me. I have the same problem but for some reason I get good grades without paying too much attention and i am an expert on doing hw the class before.(Im serius I do ALL my homework in school the same day except for projects and essyas which i do the night before)
But i am good at it and get good grades like in the mid 90's

I think you should have a schedule like HW for 2 hours then the rest of the afternoon you play video games
Just TRY HARDER

Just to let you know, you're not nearly as lazy as you think. My friend refuses to get up after laying down for a certain amount of time.
You're not that bad off.

Cut your wrists. (kidding closedeyes.gif)

Yeah I'm lazy, but I haven't overcome it yet, so I have no useful advice.

1. Turn off your computer.
2. Force yourself to actually DO something.

This sounds exactly like me, my god, you are me!
Everything you said in that post is my current situation, even the part about Xbox! Except, wait, there's one main difference... I'm too lazy to write up a topic.

I got extremely lucky with my grades, if I didn't have a :censored:ing awesome math teacher I would've had to repeat or go to summer school. Also, note that when I say ":censored:ing awesome math teacher" I don't mean she taught well. I didn't earn that damned C.

Use some willpower, slap yourself, tell yourself you're trash, get up off your ass and move!

WILLPOWER

Also you have to be determined, you have to NOT want to be lazy.

Try to set a long term goal. It may sound corny, but I was much like you (Trying to skip assignments and such, I had the assurity that school was worthless.) Basically after getting a report card where most of the grades were C's with a few D's, I got to thinking, is this how I want to spend my life?
I didn't want to end up like some old guy who works at a corner store. I decided that I wanted to become a scientist. Basically I enjoy learning how things work. So I took bunches of hardcore science electives. (I currently have 7 science credits, which is almost double what people normally have, and I'm taking another two this year) Go for things you like doing.

Actually one of the things that might have helped me start trying to do better was I took a harder class. Freshman year I took Comparitive Religions, which is designed for seniors. I felt like I was a part of the big team then, and I actually made a lot of friends in the class. It was really hard work, but I got a B+ in the class which made me feel like I had accomplished something that normal freshmen couldn't. I guess that boost really helped me try better in other classes.

Wow man your just like me

but i never DID my homework on the bus this is what i did last year

when i got my homework assignment i tried to rush through it RIGHT when i got it even if the teacher is teaching and then when i dont finish it i tell my self, "ill do my homework when i get home" but i always forget or it comes to my tention and i just dont feel like doing it.

But 1 thing i know i will not be doing that this year
Wanna know why:
oh well your gonna know why anyways

well i got into 2 fights last year in 8th grade which got me thrown out of school and got enrolled into a Court continuation school ( this is the school after Behavior School ). So i spent 7 months there then school was over. I passed there because hmph we got barly ANY work all we got was math that was like name to ratios of nine and ten or w/e.

and + for reading we had to write stupid easy stuff.

which was easy for me. so back to the story

now school is over its summer time ( which it is right now ) and i start school in 2 weeks. But the reason why ill be doing my work and not misbehaving is if i get in TROUBLE once one time i get sent back to that Pathetic school i went to (Continuation) which is a really bad school due to kids that been to jail go there etc..
and i know for a fact if you dont do some assignments you get a referrel which can lead to me getting kicked out and me never returning to this school im going to ( which i want to go cuz all my friends are there )

Now to the part that will help you: imagine that your in my situation if you dont do your work you get kicked out of school which will lead into worse things.

and if you do do your work you will become successful and never have to go to Continuation. so like i said imagine your self being in my boots for 4 years and that should help you overcome your laziness for school.

OTHER stuff i do at home tho like i say ill do dishes i never do btw this doesnt help that lol. this only works for school ( this is all true )

I'm just as lazy as you I would think... I do my homework at 9pm and still pull a 4.0 GPA..

You need to get yourself a girl, but by what you've said so far, that might be a little difficult until you can get yourself out of high school.

I know your situation very well though - I was in it last year and was doing my homework at 11pm onwards etc. and only getting high grades because I wouldn't let my standards slip (meaning I would be up until 4/5am doing work sometimes). I would play PS2 or go on the computer up until I realised that I really ought to start my work.

But anyway, my suspicion is that you are using video games as a form of escapism, and that you're not going to be able to change that until you figure out what it is in your life that makes you want to escape, and then do something about it.

Life is just, boring.
If all my teachers didn't teach at such as slow pace, it'd be more exicting, but I can't get into better classes because my grades last year sucked.

I am EXATCLY like you, only I pulledan 80gpa only becuase I'm a human encyclopedia. I retain information like a dry sponge, only it doesnt get sqeezed out.

BUt anyway, I lack initiative to work. I get distracted very easily if the task at hand is not of my interest. This is why I like non-personal lectures. When the teacher rambles, I learn a HELL of a lot more than if we do a 3 page essay (I know 3 pages is nothing, but leave me alone). I'm not a hands on person, I'm a 'be told and understand for basically forever' person. Never studied, arg losing track again.

I'm supposed to be doing a 2 page, double spaced essay that I just cant do, I've one question to answer, then word it into the assignment, but jsut that last question has bumfuzzled me.

As for a remedy, get into classes that you love. Like for example, I love computers, so I'm taking a class on it. I need to pass this year to take the next one, so I must pass all my classes (Which are honors except for academic physics, which, If I had realized it, i could bring at least to honors, also, taking AP US Hist).

I hate it when the teacher teaches EXTREMLY slow. My math teacher did that this year and I was sooo pissed. I was the smartest in the class, and we weren't even going by the book so i could not read ahead. =\ This year was hell.

I hate busy work too becuase it accomplishes nothing for me. It just pisses me off.

Does your school have a website where you can check on your grades? (aka powerschool) If you do, you could have your parents hound you on your grades so badly that from shame you'll get it done. It works!

But.. if you don't have that luxury, just make a schedule that you can't play Xbox until the weekend. Have your parents hide your games at their job or something in that effect. Basically, what YOU have to do is a war of attrition: pay attention to your homework long enough to get them done! If you fully focus, you can get it done fast. happy.gif

Edit: Oh, and another solution is what my friends did; they did the first half of their homework during lunch so they wouldn't have as much to do at home.

Yeah, usually I try to do the assignment in the class if I do get homework (Which was rare last year)
