I am taking all the best parts from all of the lord of the rings maps that i have played and putting then into one map
It will start when the fellowship leaves rivendell and will and when the ring gets do doom or when gondor rohan and the elves are all destroyed by mordor moria and isengard
Very Cool... just a suggestion though. There are a few Lord of the Ring maps out there... they are Very Basic... no map detail... basically you control a huge army and kill everything or a hero and try to defend something... they get really old real quick and show little effort in actually trying to make a good map.
But looks like your on the right track... so will it shape into being an RPG or something?

I think your wrong about the low levev of map details, they are (atleast the good ones i used to play) often very accurate acording to the maps in the books and i think they are fun, and usually you dont use those big armies its mutch easier to opp them (hero rush the spawn building).
Then maybe im just playing the Really terriable ones. I jsut find maps that you start out with a Huge ammount of units... and ahve to massivly dominate something is kind of boring... i like special effects but thats just me.
Are you talking along the lines of The Rings of Power style of gaming, through bases and improvements being possible alongside general armies and elite men, or heroes.
Or
Helm's Deep style with it centred on two sides, fighting each other other terrain, such as The White Tower (The ONLY Really good example of this), with some heroes and then a person, or persons, in control of the main bases.
I prefer the first of the two, but good luck with it!
The best lotr map is pre middle earth or whatever it names is

i never really liked the helms deep maps.
No Pre-Middle Earth is so full of bugs, all of which everyone uses that its almost pointless for most people to play it, in fact people play by using the bugs in the fastest time possible, i think someone should re-create it, and maybe add some more balance changes, but in its time it was the best.
TROP was good, but simple!
Laurolin was amazing when it came out, still got good triggering!
nono its not bugged, and its good balance in it.
No, sorry must disagree with you on this one, it has some flaws that people take advantage of, and many units are underpowered, underused, while others are almost game winners.

I am trying to make game play for the fellowship as RPGish as possible

It will be like Siege of Gondor, Sorons Deceit, or A Desperate hope
There will be no arbiters and I am keeping air units to a minimum
I am also thinking about adding a mass attack
As for the map layout, I am copying the maps in the back of the lord of the rings books as accurately as possible
May i suggest using an observer to choose the location of the mass attack, and maybe having it set to the unit you want to mass attack with, and an overall attacking unit, so that people can choose where they attack, throughout the gaming field, with what they attack and what time?

As far as the observer to choose the location to attack to that is what I was planning, as to being able to choose what units to attack with that through in a whole new level of complexity to the mass triggers but if I can I will try to add it in but I am still about a month away from that stage of development.
Sorry for offtopicness; thsoe units in pre middle earth that are very good are ment to be evry good and there is one way to stop any atatck with those and it involves using the arbitor and stasis.

Hmmm, but then again, they might take that out!
Yeah i think the difficulty will be low! Trust me...
post some screen shots if you dunno were go here
go herei will add a screen shot when i finish the map layout
So far, it sounds great

Keep all the work up! Its good to see some action in the community!
I know i said that i would wait until i finished the terrain but I have changed by mind hear is the map so far please note that I have been working on it for less than 2 weeks and the look will change allot when i finally release it
lol can only attach 200k but my screen shot is 64 megs (i think that they maid the save to image command in scmdraft a little to good

)will have to shrink it... ALLOT
so that delays me to posting the screen shot tomorrow (the computer with the gif editing programs is in my parents room and they are sleeping

)
ok hear it is:
