Well, I personally don't like RPGs, but some features that could be good are..

1) Action style gameplay. I want the result of a fight to be based on my play and not on how much my unit has leveled up.
2) Storyline. An RPG is a long game, so it should be fairly immersive.
3) Variety. Many RPGs get boring because players simply do the same things over and over.
4) Smooth control systems: Controls should use a fast-acting system, preferably hotkeyable. In general, if irritation > fun, players will leave.
5) Balanced player types. If you are using more than one player class, make sure that they are all balanced. Classes can be calibrated to suit different play styles, but should always be equal in usefulness.
6) For the love of God, please, please, PLEASE do not use kill based scoring. It's way overused and makes support classes worthless.

Kill based scoring could be alright. It just takes a lot more balancing of the units and knowledge of kill scores(shouldn't be too hard).

^ agreed, and try to do something new, not just copy another RPG and change the words around

You have to find the balance between a text based story with character devolpment and boring everyone to death with too much text
