Cave story is a free platformer game that is similar to Metroid in terms of gameplay. I played this a few months ago and I'm suprised how good it is. I heard the creator spent 5 years working on it and the hard work shows. Sadly, it's barely popular, and I think it deserves to be more well known, so anyone who wants a challenging game and has some spare time, play it.

Wow, a very impressive game. Feels like it's commercial quality. Although I do have to say that the story may be a bit confusing.

Ahhh!!!!!! The last boss is like impossible!! I only had 4 life and I used the life pot when fighting the doctor... This'll take a while...

I beat all three bosses with no life capsule. If you want pure challege, play it through again and get to the secret hell level.
