Staredit Network -> Staff Lounge -> Use Map Settings Section Leader Applications
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yoshi da Sniper on 2005-09-08 at 12:38:48
This is an application to become a Use Map Settings Section Leader. Essentially, you will be Yoshi_da_Sniper's ears and eyes for those sections, as he can no longer maintain and manage these sections without bias.

This opportunity gives you these responsibilities:
- You will be a moderator of all of the forums in that section. Any posts or comments found to be bad or offensive will be dealt with by you. As section leader, you will keep out posts of opinion about maps/mods that are negative unless they are backed up with a reason.
- Yoshi_da_Sniper from time to time may want to seek advice on the section, for site benefits and so on. They are usually easy questions, such as "who has the most potential for moderating there" or "which maps/mods are really highly anticipated".
- You are expected to know what is going on in your section, mainly in the Showcase, Production, and Concept areas of the forum.
- Maybe 2-4 times a year, you should organize a contest that does not conflict with another contest that is going on.
- Answer people's questions when they PM you or ask on the forums to the best of your knowledge.
- Think up realistic ideas or take other peoples suggestions, and suggest them to Yoshi if you think it is worth the time and effort to put in a feature or whichever. The idea of this is to get more people involved and interested in your editing section. An example would be a new forum or subforum (make a poll and have people vote if they want to try an idea too).
- You should notify Yoshi when there are extremely high quality maps/mods coming out in your section, so he may make the proper news posts and advertisements for it.
- If you are leaving temporarly, you are required to tell Yoshi if it takes more than a week so he knows that you're still active.

Abilities and benefits you get:
- A 10mb @staredit.net email address, or a forwarder (so yourname@staredit.net will go to yourname@gmail.com giving you 1 gig of mail space if you want).
- News posting privileges and access to the almighty "Staff forum" on this website.
- Participating in the fasting growing largest Starcraft Editing site on the internet currently.
- Able to have more power and say in appearance and features on the website.
- (Implanted later) Downloads database and tutorials database control so you can approve/delete/edit submittions in your section.
- High respect for the work and organization you do.
- Moderating privileges.

Requirements:
- Knowledgable is a must. You must know what people are talking about. You don't have to be the smartest person on the site, you just have to know 90% of all things to do with your section.
- You should have a passion for managing that type of section.
- You should have enough free time to be able to do all these things. A couple of hours a week is all it'll take. Don't let it interfere with school or your personal life.
- You need an account here, however I'll skip posting requirements if you have done a fair amount of editing in that section. Prove your knowledge in that case with links to maps or mods, or things you have done. Proof that you know what you are doing.
- Committed. You have to be ready to help people and do whats in their best interest.
- Calm. Not everyone you meet will be a shining example of humanity. Keep your cool.
- You need an AIM or MSN to keep in contact with Yoshi.
- Good english skills.

To Apply:
Simply reply to this topic with your account and provide the following information:
- Links to Topics, Maps or anything that proves your knowledge in your section of work. Don't be shy in this area - this is the area I am mainly looking at.
- Why you would want to become staff here.
- Some of the things you would do to improve the section you are applying for.

You have until September 14th 2005 to post this information. Good luck!

DO NOT REPLY UNLESS YOU ARE SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION. CREATE NEW TOPICS IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS ABOUT THIS POSITION. THANK YOU.

World of Starcraft 3.
See showcase thread for screenshots or production thread for the whole history.

I'd like to be staff because I'm very committed and passioned in SC and SC Mapping, and compared to almost everyone else here I'm overqualified in the verbal skills. biggrin.gif My mapping skills (not uber, but sufficient) can be shown in WoS3, but my English abilities are reflected in almost all my normal posts as well.

The first thing I'd do to improve the Production and Showcase sections of the forum is to design some templates for people to use. This way it'll be a lot easier for everyone to both make and read those threads to display their map information in an organized manner. I know from personal experience that a well-advertised map will have more success than one with poor formatting and planning, and just because you aren't keen to organize your information does not mean your mapping skills should go unrecognized.

The first thing I'd improve in the Map Making Assistance section is to put up a FAQ pinned post, expanding the Basic Help post by Moose. There are way too many repeated questions, and Basic Help does not cover many of them. I'd probably also make a template for asking questions as well.

Concepts and Ideas are doing fine themselves, and need little regulation, but hey, there can be templates for everything around here.

Example template: Production/Showcase

TITLE
GENRE
BASIC SETTINGS (Players, tileset, size, etc.)
CONTENTS (Sub-templates for RPGs, Defenses, Arenas, etc.)
SCREENSHOTS
DOWNLOAD LINK

Example template: Assistance

PROBLEM TYPE (Triggers, units, terrain, etc.)
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION (Full description)
TRIGGERS IN SUSPECT (What the poster feels may be the key problem spot)
POSTED MAP

Example template: Concepts/Ideas

IDEA TYPE (New game type, playing with terrain, etc.)

*Applies*

I'm interested because I play UMS all the time, and I've found that SEN maps usualy outshine other maps. I want to help cut down on a million different copies of the same map where some guy changed one little thing. I try to make maps, but starforge and other editing programs aren't my forte. Otherwise, I like to play Ums, and that's why I aplied for this.

I'd like to be part of the SEN staff because this is a good website, we get to cause blizzard to release three patches in a month, and because I have fun reading though my friend's posts.
I don't have too much work that includes maps, but I learn fast, and a challenge is always nice.

Besides some typos, I speak well, and I have too much free time, depending on the week.

http://www.staredit.net/index.php?tutorial=116

Reason:
I would like to help the fastest growing Starcraft Editing site on the internet. Being Tutorial Database Keeper, good English skills is a high priority. Being a Tutorial Manager is like being a personal assistant. I need to read through every sentence and correct any spelling or grammar errors. Not only are my English skills good, but I am not bad of a map maker either. As you might know I am in clan (U) and know much about the triggering system. Not only do I know the triggering system, I know the map file specifications and how to make programs for maps. I believe I am well rounded for this job.

Improvements:
I believe the people of SEN should be able to choose the way the want to post their maps in production and their completed pieces. However, I think there should still be a template up for anyone who wants to follow it. It will be strongly encouraged to use this template but if they choose not to, then it's their choice. I believe that the map making assistance forum, nobody really reads the top part of it.

- Check to see the Tutorials Database if your question isn't already made into a tutorial.
- Try searching this forum to see if your question has been answered previously.
- Be detailed, or no one will understand you.
- Make your topic title descriptive of your problem. This will help others who are searching the forum to find the solution to the same problem you might be having.

I play UMS a lot and i am familiar with the current trends and maps on Bnet today.
I post a fair amount whenever i see an especially exciting map coming up or something i know i can help with in assitance. I am on SEN about 2 hours per day and I will continue to do that for the rest of the year. I am currently working on a map called terrain defense which will be revolutionary in terms of replayability and, of course, terrain. I know a lot of the people who post regularly in UMS and i would meet new members easily as well. Also, I would add a list of frequently solved prolems at the top of the assitance forum so that the same questions aren't answered over and over. I think that all things considered i would make an excellent UMS keeper.

I would like to apply for the position of the "Use map settings Section Leader" I have made A good amount of maps for the amount of time I have spent map making (Im known more for terrain however). You can check out the clan Oo forums For my submitted mapswww.staredit.net/index.php?showtopic=9551. I am very active on staredit even though my minerals don't show it (I mostly post in the non-mineral forums). Im on at least twice a day. I don't think I will have any problems with fighting. I know pretty much every trick about UMS map making (Im sure my knowledge is at least 90%) I am one of the general managers of Clan Oo so i am very trust worthy. My english is pretty good. Im only in grade 9. I still map make unlike allot of other people wich is really what this is all about. I think that, with time, I would get very involved with the section. Maybe there could be a UMS terrain show case since the current one is all about blending. Id keep it mighty clean! I am very committed since starcraft is really the only game i play. Organising competitions and/or contests sounds like allot of fun. Also, I would like to get more known out side of clan Oo and i think this would help. Anyways, thanks for reading
my application you can e-mail me at humanfoghorn@hotmail.com

Well, this is going to seem like an awful application, for a couple of reasons. First, I'm mostly a lurker forum-wise, so I don't post much and am not well known, despite the number of hours daily I spend monitoring the forums. Second, I haven't produced anything that shows what I could do with my mapping knowledge, if I decided to actually develop a decent-sized project past the concept stage...but hey, there it is. There's a little bit of my stuff in the DLDB, but with the exception of Radial, which is itself more of a game-type study and doesn't have any really interesting systems in it, they were all completed years ago.

But anyhow, here's why I think I could do a decent job at the position:
1. I've played a lot of UMS, and as a (mostly retired) version maker, I've seen how many maps work. I also keep track of map trends on battle.net
2. My status as a watcher has left me informed but still impartial. There's no bad blood between me and anyone else. By the same token, I'm unlikely to give preferential treatment to anyone.
3. As a sophomore in college, I would like to think that I have the maturity and communications skills to be an effective leader.

Here are a few of the improvements that I would make:
1. The concepts forum: in my view, this is the most important part of this area. That said, as the forum exists right now, it mainly considers applied concepts, i.e. map systems and the occasional idea that is general and new enough to be counted as a concept. I would make space for and strive to encourage a different type of concept: map theory. This area deals with map-making philosophies, the study of UMS map genres, map distribution studies, and the like. The idea is to encourage concept discussion on a conceptual level as well as on a practical one.
2. Ignored but valid thread rescue: sometimes a perfectly good, worthwile thread sinks into nothingness, either because there's an easily fixable difficulty with it or a minor omission from it, or simply from bad luck. Bringing such threads to people's attention could lead to the rescue of these threads and less disappointment to the author. Note that, as harsh as it may seem, I am not saying that every dying thread should be rescued (for many die or end for good reason). I am simply saying that sometimes a thread deserves another chance at life.
3. On the subject of templates: The fact of the matter is, sometimes a post simply can't fit a template, and other times, people just don't want to use the template; so, I'd leave people with the freedom to use or not use a template, as they see fit. I would work on template generation, but not require people to use them.

REASONS
I've always loved it here at SEN, because of the people who come and ask for assistance or show off their maps and things like that. And I've always liked helping others in their map making and watching others produce their maps step by step. I see threads that are really...pointless and of low quality, but I also see very good threads that don't get the recognition they should have. I think I could help them out with that.

IMPROVEMENTS
In my opinion, I think good threads tend to get unnoticed. I think I can help "advertise" these threads and bring more members to it. I am also full of ideas, I might not have many now, but as time goes by, plenty will show up.

I know my triggers well, and I have a good sense of opinion when it comes to terrain. I may not be the best, but I know whats appealing and what's not. I am usually very calm. I don't remember any time I acted out of anger or showed anger in my posts. If I did, I don't know if anyone will notice. I am currently leading clan Mp, so there is some sign of leadership there.

Well, I've got nothing to lose so...
I'm applying for UMS Leader. I am familiar with many triggers, sometimes when i get bored, I figure out how lots of the popular new maps work. I'm good with triggers, but sadly, terrain is not my strong suit. I think I have good English skills, and if I get this position, I'll show it. I know people who probably look down on me with my current skills, but I haven't shown them all I can do. Flamers and people who hate maps for no reason REALLY annoy me, but I do not punish people unless it is nessesary, and I never call people "n00bs". If I get bored, I usually just get on here and read about new UMS maps. I would like to have this part because, well, I like staredit, and I think I would make it a better place if i had these privilages. It's guaranteed that I will be on AT LEAST twice a week, at the minimum. To improve the forums, I would update the FAQ section often, and possibly make FAQ's for each kind of UMS map in (bounds, defense, RPG, etc.). I also have AIM, my name is in my profile, and I might get on more often if I get to be the leader of UMS. I also play UMS a lot, and I'm active on battle.net on USWest. So that's about it. Thank you for reading this.

P.S.: I've added the map I'm working on. I add updates to it regularly. The version I attached is probably 0.47.

I don't make many maps, but I make them good.

---------

I'd like to become staff to help bring some order to the somewhat chaotic UMS section and to take some load off Yoshi's back.

---------

-Implementing faster closing of topics when they are solved seven times over to prevent ever-present spam
-Possible integration between pinning Map Showcase threads and the DLDB spotlight
-Hopefully better organized contests. This is my big goal here

It couldn't hurt to try, right?

CREDIBILITY
I believe that I have a substantially good amount of moral judgement that will enable me to hold up the moderating section of this position. I believe that both sides of any issue should be addressed and that my ability to interpret these perspectives is exceptional. In addition, I also believe that I can see through to keeping order within discussions, I am very capable of determining the credibility and capabilities of many users, and I am able to handle situations under extreme pressure. I have had past experience demonstrating these abilities and I have evidence that suggests that the merit of those attributes are authentic. On SEN, and in much of the SC map making community I sincerely believe that I already have retained much of the respect that I desire, and at this point, I am choosing to apply for this position solely to escalate the progress of this network.

KNOWLEDGE OF POSITION'S FIELD
I believe that I have an exceptional amount of knowledge in the UMS field. I have a thorough understanding of triggers and their capabilities that can be expressed in a UMS map, as well as how many effects created by any complex level of trigger composition is achieved. My level of standard for placing a map within the hierarchial tree of quality, organization, and entertaining appeal is what I believe to be fair and at a substantially proffesional level. In addition, I am more than capable of helping others in their troubles within these areas of expertise and I have made many maps of my own in demonstration of these knowledges, either partially or fully completed.

I have already had much experience in managing a group and keeping order within that group; and in the process of doing so, I have reasonable trust to think that I have obtained the sufficient amount of maturity, knowledge, judgement, and communicative skills that are required of this position, as well as the skills that are required to perform in this position exceptionally. Thank you for taking the time to read over and consider my application.

Requirements:

I am very knowledgable. I am very familiar with all of the mapping utilities.
I can give in depth explanations about all of the editor's and what they are used for. Or, if one is better than the other.

cough SF vs. SCMDraft cough

StarForge 2.2
StarForge is a very powerful editor. In my opinion, StarForge's text based triggers are much faster than the traditional "Click" method of StarEdit.

SCMDraft
Personally, SCMDraft is the best terrain editor. No competition. With it's new copy and paste feature's, it makes almost all other editor's obsolete. Now, if only SCMDraft could get an AutoComplete trigger base, I would never switch editors.

StarCraft X-tra Editor
This was the very first editor I ever used. I still use it every now and then. But, it is still a great editor for new people to mapping, should learn on. It is a fantastic editor. Mainly because it is almost 100% bug free.

My Knowledge of the Forum's:

Map's in Production
Map's in production is my favorite forum. Just because I love to see new ideas and map's in progress. Although, many of the map's that are placed there, never get finished. But, I'll make sure that more map's will get finished. Just because, SC is due for a few more "block-buster" maps.

Map Making Assistance
The Map making assistance forum is a hard forum to cope with. But, it is kind of fun at the same time. I am sure it is a heavy burden, only because you answer many of the same questions day in and day out. But, I'll do it. I enjoy when I actually help someone and they can take that little lesson and expand their knowledge and hopefully, figure two more things out just from my one piece of advice.

Map Showcase
The Map Showcase forum. Well, if only this forum was filled with more threads than the Map's in Production and Map Making Assistance forum. But, that isn't the case. Rarely do you see maps that were featured in the Map's in Production forum make it to this stage. But, it is still a cool forum. because, if someone does complete a good map, you get to download it before many people. This is usually the first place people go to show off their completed map. So, that means, you get to play it before having to wait for the DLDB keeper's to allow it in the DLDB.

Concepts
The concepts forum. This forum always has something new. The cool thing is, people can always benefit from it because there is always some new, original idea that already works there. For instance, Wilhelm's Thunder Storm Effect Simulation. Wilhelm started the original idea, and Triggamasta upgraded it. And if you ask me, that is one hell of an effect for lightning. Especially for SC. We can also take one of the biggest discoveries in UMS map making history. Extended Unit Deaths (Edhs). Look how much fun it was to explore and push the limits. But, sadly, these triggers were very dangerous to your computer. They enabled people to run malicious code onto your computer. So, Blizzard patched them up.

My Idea's for Improvements:

I would improve the Map Making assistance forum. One of the biggest things that need's to be changed is the FAQ. Many, many, many of the questions that have been asked. Have been answered several times. Something like: "Kills to Cash". I believe there has been around 50+ threads dedicated just to those questions.

I think that the Maps in Production forum should have a basic design template as well. I would say my biggest turnoff about threads in the MiP forum, is when people just post the thread like:

"i am makn a rpg. it is 2 playres and the gmae is about 2 kids dat get lost in da forest. tehn one day they get posused by a gost... etc"

Let's say the creator of that map ^, made the BEST map EVER. I wouldn't download it. If people do not take the time to at least present their map in a normal way, there map's ratings will not go anywhere. I would say one of the best looking production thread's are made by qPirateKing. His template's make sense, and look good. They make the map look 100x better.

Ideas
The idea's forum isn't the most active forum in the world. But, it does have some...well... good idea's. Occasionally, you'll see a thread that actually has good significance to other's.

I also have very good english skills. I am pretty good at deciphering what other people say. I.E. A user from a foreign country and English is not the first language.

Contact's:

All of my connections can be found inside My profile

Other:

I do not have anything public to show you knowledge of how I am with triggers. But, what I can show you is how I am with terrain. You can look at the RPG I currently have in production: Love & Hate. There are a couple of the screenies from my map. As for trigger's... I guess the best thing to show you, or prove to you, is for you to ask me a couple of questions I guess... tongue.gif

Love & Hate is possibly the only thing I can show you about knowledge for maps.

I would like to be able to help SEN by being one of the staff member's. Why? Because, SEN has taught me many things in life. Not only about SC. Take the serious discussion forum. I used to be very closed-minded. Until, an older member (DrunkenWrestler) kind of taught me how to open up my eyes. Also, some of the people who helped me stay with Map Making were people like Moogle, qPirateKing, LegacyWeapon,(U)Bolt_Head, and many other's. All of them have helped me in one way or another with map making. I just wish there was a way I could repay the favor's for them. And I believe of I am able to help Moderate the forum's, it'll be kind of like my token of appreciation.
