Staredit Network -> Miscellaneous -> How should a staff member act anyway?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2004-05-04 at 10:50:50
I was just wondering... On every forums; there's always some "unhappy" staff members; or people that just don't post around that much... (except on SEN).

And I came to the conclusion that most of them are extremely respected, or feared cuz they don't post much and cuz of that, when they do, it's like "OMG he's posting STFU and do what he's saying!"

What do you think about that? Should people around expect staff members to act very seriously and rarely act friendly? Or is it better to just post like normal members and moderate when it's possible (like... now... right on SEN)

Perhaps it comes with age too... I know Bolt is more than 18, thus, he's more mature (popular belief), as well as on SSC with most staff member being adults; they didn't post much at all and acted cold...

Perhaps, again, that it comes with experience... Once you get to know all what there is to do and the bad sides, you just learn to calm down, hide somewhere and moderate in a dark corner without posting...

Opinions/reactions?

Hmm i think they should just act as a regular member and if its needed they will do whatever they need, like banning someone.

a problem could be if the staff becomes friends with everyone and the forums go crazy biggrin.gif

Or you're indirectly telling us you secretly hate some moderators xD

So you're awaiting us to actually behave as if they were superior? These kind of things are very frequent on other forums (again; still not on SEN).

They're like "I have the bigger side, so STFU and don't argue"

Hopefully we aren't making that impression...

I act like a regular member dont I?

I just go into "Administrator and Moderator" mode when someone isn't treating this community right.

I hate acting like I'm all powerful, as you all know.

Good poll SP smile.gif

I welcome opinions on my performance here.

I don't think post count is an important thing. I just think that they should get on regularly and check posts for spam and ban idiots. They should also act mature and not flame other members, but deal with problems calmly.

I used to be a really serious administrator back at Supreme Starcraft. It was no fun tongue.gif

Right now, I'm pretty much like anyone else regularly, and serious in problems.

Act as anyone else, but more seriously than most people

That's what I think...

I might make a good mod, but maybe not. I can't be serious too often about anything.

We actually need more people like you SP, as much as i hate to say it. I mean, not Lord of Darkness (after all I don't need more competition) but the way you act. Though I did get 10% warn from you, I guess it was deserved. tongue.gif

Well i havent been on many other forums but i think your a great webmaster and administrator, you got a forum with lots of posts every day and yet very little spam and what ever spam happens you deal with it, and your still being friendly to everyone.. biggrin.gif

I post when I have something to say, and don't when I have nothing. My job is to know the rules and enforce the rules. I really come from the same background as you guys. Even my warn level was raised for spamming awhile ago. tongue.gif

Moose, I just remembered why your warn level got raised. You said "Moo" to a topic that wasn't garbage forum lol.

ent, thank you biggrin.gif I enjoy seeing my ideas become successful. Apparenty a forum with the one magic rule (that unfortunately had to be expanded into a whole topic) seems to have worked.

Shadow, don't get me started on maturity. I'm VERY immature wink.gif. I'm almost 17 and I still like to pull jokes and pranks. Frankly, I think maturity is just how you deal with problems, not being a boring serious person all the time. I come here to have fun, not to talk about the worlds political struggles and other serious things.

I think behaving as if your superior is the worst thing to do. I personally don’t respect amins or mods because of there position. And I would not expect some one to respect me because of it ither. Its better to come across as a friend, it makes things run smoother and keeps both people happier. If you learn to respect a mod or admin that is polite, then when he or she makes a move to get something accomplished or put there foot down your more likely the respect it. If your viewed as rude or a supreme force, people are more likely to rebel because of it.

Its quite a bit like the job I have. For about 3 years my main manager at my job has been one of the closest friends I have had there. And I respect her a lot, If she ask me to do something then I’m sure as heck going to do it. But that’s mainly because of her attitude, As a manager if you don’t do anything your self or ask people to do the things you wouldn’t do yourself, then you will get no respect. It’s kind of the same way at the forums. If a admin or something doesn’t follow the rules themselves then why would a regular member want to.

So therefore my answer to the poll is to Act like a regular member as much as possible (yet still fix problems if you see them). But of course you got to be extra careful to follow the rules yourself, because you are setting an example. There’s nothing worse than some one who thinks he is better than everyone else. I think if I was expected to do anything else as a mod here, I would give up my position in a instant. I have no interest in being almighty and don’t wish to gain respect that way.

well, I have a forum not as busy as this one that I'm admin of and I act like a regular member. I guess it matters how popular the website is; if it's really popular, I'd act a bit more serious, if it's a few friends, I would mess around all the times.

If it's a problem, why don't admins and mods get split personalities accounts and act like a normal person that way?

Moderators should appear to be members/friends, and appear to have authority as well. So people can recognize both.

Act like a normal person.
If I were a mod, admin, staff, etc, I'd want to ne known for fairness and insanity.
And so I should want mods, staff, admins etc to do the same as what I'd like: be themselves, and be respected for themselves, not their positions.
Though, strictness is why I'd probably make a bad mod...

You mean a mod with strictness is what makes a bad mod or YOU don't have enough strictness and you would make a bad one?

Prob lack thereof.

*jumps in late into thread*

I think that mods should be just like all the other members, but able to weild their power resposibly if needed. Ex: Pred. mellow.gif He needed it. He got it. Job done. Now back to normal. biggrin.gif
