Well, I am now wanting to pull my hair out one by one. All I want to do is download files and surf the internet. Is that too much to ask?

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone can help me with the following:
I know that as of now, I won't be getting a faster internet connection. I am currently on a 56k modem. It takes me about 20-30 minutes to just download a file that's roughly the size of a megabyte. So, I am wondering if anyone knows of a good download accelerator? If so, if you could tell some of it's specification's and maybe even post a link to where I can look at it!
And the other thing...
I really, really want a faster internet connection. But, unfortunatley I do not know where to start. So, I wanted to know if anyone can help me out here. Just give me some specification's on faster connections. I do not want something that'll destroy my wallet. If you know what I mean! I just need something faster than 56k. So, just tell me what would be a good upgrade.
Thanks to anyone that responds to this!
Forsaken
wait a minute you fooled me.. there is no Usa... and middle East.. Curse you..
i think you can find something on
cnet.
SBC DSL is fairly cheap ($12.99/mo for 12 months) at current advertised rate; Comcast is much better internet but a lot more expensive ($29.99/mo)
Well, like I said I am cheap.

What's the difference?
Reliability? or Speed? or... What?
Comcast is up to four times faster (my cable is 10mbps and outstrips my processor) and offers a few more nice features. If all you really need is decently fast interenet, SBC should would fine.
Comcast is just ridiclous. All these companys jack the price up so much you need to go to the 'no-name' companies if you want to still have money left after each billing cycle.
AOL is just ludacris. Their dial-up plan is up to 4 times other compnies prices, and their software is horrible.
ßleh, I'm just cynical.
AOL is retarded. No two ways about that. But nobody beats Comcast in speed and features, so if you have the money to spend, I think they're worth it.
Well, all I want is something faster than 56k. With Yahoo, about how fast is the $19.95 (or whatever the price is) connection? Becuase, frankly... I have NO idea about how fast the other speeds of connections besides 56k.

http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/That's the one I'm using now. It's free, cost no money, and has all the features that I find in download managers - downloading from multiple sources, multiple connection to a single source, link/web/download browser, compatible with Firefox and IE (for firefox, use the Flashgot extention
here). Favourite one, outperforms everything else I've used, and has no spyware or malicious stuff in it.

I'm constantly connected at 54MB and I don't have Comcast. I have Cox Cable (i'm in Pheonix, too.... So maybe that's why >.<)
I currently have Comcast Cable. It's the best that I've seen. DSL is too slow (In comparison, I've never had DSL before cable, so I'm a bit biased). DSL is cheaper though, so I don't know which outweighs what. But if you have the money, go for Comcast over DSL.
digital cable is da bomb. i use it and i can dl files 20 times bigger then what u can in like 10 sec's tops

it's like a demon. but it's local so...
at my dads, i have comcast. i like it, its fast, no programs to install on your comp, jus plug and play. really fast, gives you email accounts and stuff.
at my moms, i have roadrunner
road runner's diffrent... its really fast sometimes, slower others. all i know is sometimes when i go play starcraft on comcast at my dads, sometimes it seems faster.
i guess, it really depends, will you be using a router?
I have no idea what I'll be using... As long as it's faster than 56k. I don't care!

464mbps (megabits per second)? Yeah right.Thats impossible.. Thatd be the speed of like... light.
Nothing available in my area excpet PatMedia cable and Sprint DSL, both expensive enough to knock your socks off.
well my school has t3 and thats like the fastest internet out there in fact you cant get it unless your business or something like it but it costs like 1000 a month for them but the best part is that they dont filter through anything i can play sc on it but prob never get to bc of all the damn teachers in there
i dont know exactly how fast it is but imma find out on tuesday i know that this dosnt help u but just thought u might want to know btw i think verizon dsl in the new york area dropped to $15 and i get 3 megs
but i pay 30 till next year bc i have a contract for a year at $30

if ur in the NY area
I have Rogers Yahoo Hi-Speed Internet EXTREME (
link)
Never have a problem with it

I just use Verizon DSL and I'm fine. Especially on playing CS:S servers almost next to home. XD
SBC is good... I downloaded the DirectX SDK (300 or 400 megs?) in half an hour.
Get an OC192. It downloads 9.6 gigs a second. But the downside is that its like 400,000 dollars a month.

My brother is always talking about that, but isn't it only for businesses and stuff too?
*Forsaken pulls out $48,000,000 dollars to pay for one year of SUPER fast internet!
