Yeah for the people who do not know what this is . It is basically a CGI movie project by Square Enix set in the world of FF7, of course using modern CGI technology. And no it is not a game obviously. Blending fantasy, sci fi and your Japanese take on game/movie presentation.
http://www.square-enix.co.jp/dvd/ff7ac/Anyways, I just saw this movie from an anime shop since I shop there regularly.
I don't know what to say really, so I'll just offer my unbiased point of view from a person who has played perhaps 5 hours of FF7.
The story: Well basically you have your typical FinalFantasy plot, impending doom on the world. Nothing special or that could've taken months to write. Of course it is a continuation of one of the all time greastet RPG's (Or so the masses say at least). So I'll give it that, I guess it's not really a stand alone movie at all.
The story relies heavily on that the watcher has previous knowledge of the world, it does offer a brief "recap" but that isn't enough.
Audio: Well the music score here had nothing original, just FF7 music remixes and fight scene techno. But I think Nobuo Uematsu and the director generally wanted the audience to keep to the speeches/fight scenes. The music was simply to enhance, nothing along the lines of LOTR epic'ness though.
Graphics: Well.....all I can say is ...wow ..best CGI I've seen so far. Better than any pixar film. If you're a CGI fan, holy crap just watch this for the CGI quality.
Presentation/Coreography: Incredible fight scenes, incredible detail, incredibly polished. I have nothing to complain, a good action movie fan can still appreciate this simply from the insane battle scenes. You can tell where SquareEnix obviously blew their budget/time on this. About time a CGI movie like this came out.. Oh on the blood and gore, nothing much really.
So was I disappointed? Slightly...you could say FF:AC was a bunch of random fight scenes sewn together with some crap plot any idiot could think of. Or you could take it as a gift from SquareEnix, a FMV scene from FF7 on steroids with a huge budget. Regardless I can't really rate this as a film considering SquareEnix is a game company, and I honestly do not think they intended this as a "film".
Just to restate my point of view, I know the general plot lines of FF7. Main events, played to about 50% of DISC 1 maybe? But I am not a FF7 fanboy, nor was I ever a SquareSoft fanboy.
Good "movie" though, I highly recommend any FF7 fan to watch it. If you HAVE NO CLUE what the hell is FinalFantasy then..I don't think you will enjoy it too much. The director assumes the audience has [this] and [that] in their head. If you know a bit, it's still a good movie. But please don't watch it and expect it as some full length feature film with a LOTR conclusion. Heh, I have no clue when it comes out in North America, but it was delayed I believe. It's basically out in Japan and it is out on the internet.
8/10
The dvd is out in Japan. There was never a theatrical release. American release date is unknown. Yes the internet version has fansubs, but it is pretty basic Japanese for the most part. (Fighting takes up most of the movie
)
