Staredit Network -> Games -> Game Player Sentenced to Death

QUOTE(Tim Surette -- GameSpot)
Judge sentences gamer to death
20-year-old who used Grand Theft Auto as defense for triple homicide sentenced to lethal injection.

Earlier this year, Devin Moore, now 20, was on trial for the 2003 triple homicide of three Alabama policemen. While in detention for stealing a car, Moore grabbed the pistol of one officer and used it to fatally shoot a total of three of them.

The defense mounted a case based on a childhood full of mental and physical abuse, as well as an affinity for violent games. One game in particular, Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto III, was singled out, because gamers can steal cars and kill cops in it. Moore had said he was inspired by the PlayStation 2 game.

In August, a jury swiftly convicted Moore of the charges. And today, a judge laid down the most severe punishment the justice system allows.

Moore will be put to death by lethal injection. Defense attorney Jim Standridge will appeal the case.

The victims' families have sued Take-Two Interactive (parent company of Rockstar), Sony, Wal-Mart, and GameStop for their parts in the manufacturing and selling of the game.

It's bad enough that the defense centered around being influenced by violent games, but it's just ridiculous how the victims' families listened to this person and are blaming the developer of a video game. Just be glad the crazy son of a bitch wasn't playing God of War.

What do you guys think about this?

LETS BLAME BARNEY FOR ALL THE GAYS NOWADAYS!

It's just like that. Only less true

Well, it's good to see that his excuse that he was "inspired" by the game to do it didn't work out. IT sucks that all those companies are getting sued though. -_-

People nowadways sueing anything that happens... Lets go rob some guys house and if I trip and break my neck at your house I'll sue you for putting it there. But anyways, that is kinda crazy. Some guy gonna get sentenced to death by insparation from GTA. But if he didin't have those mental and physical abusement then I don't think he would take the game seriously like many of us who play it.

Anyone who comes up with sentence structures like this shouldn't be taken too seriously. I highly doubt the makers care.

Its funny what people blame

People don't need games to inspire them to kill people, they've been killing each other since the dawn of time. People in prehistoric times just didn't have something to blame for their actions. I think this comes from a case of bad parenting, the government ought to be punishing his parents, not rewarding them for raising their kid to be a car thief and murderer.

I find it appalling how they would blame video games and use that as a defense. Really pathetic.

That guy gives video games a bad name. closedeyes.gif

I'd like to point out that he had a physical and mental screwup history. THey shouldn't not sell games to minor they shouldn't sell it to people who seem mentally unstable. We need some device that can check your mentality.

If only the courts would recognize that as a crime.

This is quite retarded.
Seriously, there's an ERSB for a reason. If this guys is mentally unstable, they shouldnt ell him mature games.

This is why we need an national standardized I.D card and record, it could keep track of insanity. When you purchase a game rated mature, they could check you for insanity or other diseases by asking for youre card, which would only give them an alert if you shouldnt be buying those porducts.

1. How do you consider "insane"...

Great more GTA controversy. First Hot Coffee now this. It's always the video games to blame. How could they seriously know it was GTA, it could've been from a movie...or on TV.

Lol. You wanna know what shows how difficult they make their lives. OK, I was at a restraunt and I seen on TV that they were talking about violent games. Well, wanna know what they said was violent? Tetris..

Violent games help me sometimes actually. When I have anger I usually take it out on games. Ive lost 3 people in my life and sometimes I get so stressed that I wanna take it out on a game. Yet they seem to "hate" games. Look at the movies people! All those gore movies, people killing eachother is just action. They don't look at this. (Now remember im not agreeing they need to get rid of movies. Just read on..) Think about people killing other people because they watched a violent movie. Im sick of all the people.

For the hot coffee junk, im thinking alot of Xbox people hate the top game off PS2 "GTA San Andreas". Now don't accuse me of hating Xbox. I own an Xbox, Xbox Live, and I have a ps2. I havent played my Ps2 in 1-2 months. My point is, the hacker released this and he should be sued. He illegally opened the game, wandering around, and found this! If rockstar didn't show it in the game, then who cares. SUE THE HACKER!

Get your dates in line. Hot Coffee was a few months ago for San Andreas, this case started in 2003 and was based off GTA3, realsed 3 years before Hot Coffee, and it's not the first case badly linked to GTA.

The difference to old soccer moms is that your not acutally doing the killing in Movies, if it said "This is how you kill a person in 3 hits" then it might start a lawsuit, but it's nothing like what people say video games can do. All in all it's bullblam video games have nothing to do with today's violence.

Sue the hacker? What kind of stupid idea is that, it's just some kid who made a MOD, MODS are not illegal they're not far from patches, patches help the game techinally and other things and Mods just make you do cool stuff. You can't sue the hacker cause your allowed to go through the GTA files or any files just as long as you don't reproduce them or copy them in any way. The MODDER didn't MAKE the mod, it was in the GTA coding so they were too lazy to take it out so they left it in there, he just found it and triggered the way it can start a little bit and wam it's the hot coffee mod. Plus if he hadn't done it, someone would've so it doesn't matter who did it it matters who left it in there which is Rockstar North. It was in the Ps2 version too if you didn't know that it's just you can only make mods for PC version which came out at the same time as Xbox which is why you think it's Xbox's fault, it's no one's fault but Rockstar's they obviously knew it was too much for the media so they took it out, but not enough.

Are you sure? A game is copyrighted. When a hacker hacks their game, that usually is to edit the game from what its meant to be. WHICH IS ILLEGAL. Sure modding isnt illegal I know, but im talking about exploiting the game, HACKING THE GAME, will get you sued.

I need to read dates more carefully. But seriously..why do they have to sue Take-Two/ RockStar/ WalMart. They should screw suing and think about who they lost.

Modding = Editing the game. Your contradicting yourself/have no idea what your talking about.
You can mod (edit) games as long as you don't REPRODUCE ANY PART OF THEM. Those files you get when modding a game, are just doing the editing for you, it can be anywhere from Carl looking like Woozie or a Red Dinasour to having all of Los Santos flooded with water. And obviously as you can see nothing happened to the modder because what he did, wasn't illegal.
