Last summer I had Shareaza (Sharaza, forgot the spelling), a p2p program that claimed to be spyware/adware free. I downloaded several songs and my brothers downloaded a few "movies" on it. For the rest of the year, from about july-december, the computer seemed fine. I played starcraft/unreal tournament without any lag (Was on dial-up at the time) But then in January, my hard drive fried. I came back to the computer after I went outside, and there was a cross over the antivirus. Anything I tried to open wouldn't, it would say something about a missing dll. I restarted the computer and it said kernal32.dll was missing, and shut down. I bought a new HD about a week later for about 300$ and also wasted 60$ for technical support from the old one. I was a bit annoyed because I was in the middle of creating a map for unreal tournament 2k4, which had about 10 hours into it, and lost everything else I wanted to save including pictures that my family had kept on it. I blamed the destruction of the hard drive on shareaza, so I never trusted p2p programs again.
What really ticks me off is that, on the brand new hard drive, which was the EXACT same as the old one (same type, starting files, capacity, etc), I lagged on every game I played, except for turn based games. I actually didn't lag on Unreal Tourney2k4 when I played it in the spring, but in June, it just started to lag randomly, which made me go back to starcraft. I think the main cause of this was downloading the Windows XP Service Pack 2. After downloading and installing that, I could play starcraft online, but without it, I couldn't even connect to battle.net because of some random firewall issues, which I had NO firewalls located in my entire computer. I had no choice but to download the SP2 to play starcraft online. I was able to play games fine now, but, as I still do now, I lag like crazy if a map has an excessive amount of units in it or there is 6 or more players. I am getting sick of getting negative comments about how much I lag in Uberena games. I had to deal with the lag all Summer and now all of Autumn. The only program I have running in the backround while playing is the AntiVirus (CA eTrust EZ AntiVirus) and a few small tasks. I scanned for viruses throughout this time period with
Trend Micro,
Bit Defender, RAV online virus scan, Panda Virus Scan, Symatec Online Virus Scan, Microsoft Trojan Scan, Microsoft anti spyware, Spybot search and destroy, trend micro spyware scan, my updated eTrust antivirus, and PLENTY more. I removed a lot of programs from my add and remove list. Still lagged, and I was about to seriously kill myself, because I spent plenty of time doing this crap. I emailed my ISP(which has been the same since the beginning of the year) in July about how I think I'm lagging and I think I should be getting more packets sent/received and they responded:
QUOTE(My ISP's reponse)
I had to consult with one of our Network Engineers on this. Here is what he had
to say:
We block ICMP's (pings) after a certain level of traffic is reached. But, it
does not block your game play.
Depending on how much icmp traffic is present at the time, wil determine whether
it gets sent through or not. The limit is ONLY on the icmp traffic.
In short, we allow 8k per second of icmp traffic. If you try to ping something
while there is no icmp traffic, then it will go through. If you try to ping
something while there is already 8k of icmp traffic, then it will block your
ping. Again, the only thing that gets blocked is the icmp (ping) traffic, and
not other traffic.
Hope this helps.
This reply didn't help me at all. I gave up on contacting them, and just decided to live with the lag. Remember this topic?
http://www.staredit.net/index.php?showtopic=17981Yeah, same problems, nothing has cured since then.
(I guess my fear of p2p programs semi-drifted away, but still had doubts)
Well, I was looking for a p2p program yesterday and I found Morpheus, which claims to be spyware/adware/trojan free. So I download it, and downloaded about 5 Mp3s for my brothers party around 11PM last night. I put them on a CD and started to skim around on SEN. The internet seemed fine, and I went to bed. When I woke up today, I did some morning stuff and then got on the computer. I connected to the internet (Don't forget, I'm still on dial-up) and went on SEN to look over some topics in the forums. I went on broodwar, and I noticed that I started to lag more then I usually do. I disconnected in the middle of a game with Deathknight, and then again in a game with Cheeze. These were actual disconnects from the internet, so I had to reconnect each time. I did a virus scan with my month outdated anti-virus, and it found nothing. I went to Trend micro again, and it disconnected during the virus definitions update process. I was thinking that the p2p program screwed me over. After trying to open notepad files, it gives me the following error:
No disk found. Please insert a disk into drive A:\
WTF. These are notepads on my actual C: drive, having to do NOTHING with the floppy disk drive. I am getting really frustrated with all this crap, so I am just going to reformat.
The only fear I have is that, after wasting the time reformating, I will still have problems. That will be the time I decide to send my ISP a death threat letter

.
So yes, I am going to reformat before the whole HD fries again like my old one did.
I suggest everyone reformat their computer at least once a year or once every two years. There may be a hidden advanced virus in your computer that is replicating it self to every file you have, waiting to completely rape your hard drive.
(Yet I am saying this while Chuos runs around like a sailor with no antivirus at all and no computer problems)
Well, I just need to get all of these important files on CDs and then find the windows XP installation CDs. I will probably reformat either tonight or tomorrow morning.
here's my modem log if it helps
