Staredit Network -> Lite Discussion -> How did you find SEN?

So, how did you actually find SEN? Was it a good editor or was it a "Starcraft Map Making Site" that you Googled?

I found SEN by posting a topic on Gamefaqs.

Here's how it started:

Ok, I posted a topic on gamefaqs.com es to where I could find a editor that could make square terrain and not "chunky", a lot of people didn't understand me so they ignored... but this one particular member who was called Lord_of_Dabbu told me that only special kinds of map editors have "squaring" abilities, so I emailed Brian after I got his reply. He told me to go to stormcoast-fortress.net, and that's how I found about Suicidal Insanity and his great computer programming skills. The other link was http://www.staredit.net!

I was forever grateful of this. Thank you Lord_of_Dabbu!

So, as my story goes on, I downloaded so many Starcraft related stuff my computer got filled. That was also when I got the message before playing Starcraft that said: "Starcraft requires 20 megabytes of space required to play the game. Press OK to proceed, but some of the game material might be missing."

Moral: Don't go downloading so much junk.

I finally got rid of all the porn and downloaded two simple programs with their addons and support packs: Scmdraft and Starforge.
The problem was that I didn't have WinZip, (I didn't realize this at the time, so I asked SEN, "How do I get this censored.gif thing to work? Someone told me that I should download winzip, and then I said, "But WinZip costs 29$!" Go download the tryout pack

Moral: There is no moral in this story. If you can think of one, raise your hand and SENd me a PM. Yes, I meant to capitalize the SEN.

Whew, now that's over, why don't you go tell your own story! The best story teller gets some juice and some roasted peanuts! (I hope you aren't alergic...)

Hmmm... I found staredit.net about a year ago but didn't sign up to be a member until June of this year. Long story ahead...

Around April of last year, I finally figured out how to use the campaign editor. I had fiddled around with it for a couple of years and couldn't figure out how to make triggers work. The concept of triggers just didn't make sense to me until one magical day when it finally clicked. Of course, I only learned the simplest triggers and made a crappy campaign about a guy named Doodan on my brother's computer. It ended up being 30 badly designed missions that my brother had the good grace to play through for me. It was a good learning experience though.

Later that year the idea for another chapter began stirring in my head and I resolved to make it a really good quality game. It would combine elements of the standard "build a base and attack" style of maps, RPGs, bounds, and movie maps. It was long and required lots of triggers that I had no idea how to do. After alot of trial and error, I decided to search the internet for map making tips. I found this site and it proved to be the most helpful.

After over 2 months of work, the 20 mission campaign was ready to be tested. I played through it once and my brother played through it once. He was very impressed and I was even moreso. By now it was February 2005 and I decided I wanted to post it on the internet on this site and starcraft.org. While I was in the process of playing through it one last time to make sure everything worked just right, my brother's computer crashed and could not be revived. I had not saved anything on disc, so all 50 missions were gone. TOAST! They might as well have never existed. That, coupled with the deaths of my grandma and my dog, and my son's mom's drug addictions, sent me into a depression that lasted a couple of months.

I finally snapped out of it and started fiddling with maps again after I got my very own computer. I made an RPG called "Super Mario RPG" and made an account here named Doodan so I could post it. After awhile I started reading the forums and decided I would become active in the community.

That map reinvigorated my passion and so I set out to remake my Doodan missions. They have turned out much better than the first attempts. So far I have the first 30 finished and posted and am working on that complex, 20 mission final chapter. Finishing and posting those last 20 is my ultimate goal here.

I might as well do some shameless advertising:
Episode 1: Joining Forces, it's the first 6 maps.
Episode 2: The Infestation, the next 8 maps.
Episode 3: Retirement's End, the larger 16 map episode.

Now you know more about me and why I'm here!

Got quite a few of these threads but anyways I found SEN when I was going "Omg! An editor that can let you stack units! That is cool!" My friend was using it and I was so amazed that we could stack buildings. So I look it up on google and it leads me to www.scindex.com where from there I went to the affiliates and found www.staredit.net which had good tutorials. I never signed up for the forums until after a while.

Well, I descovered Staredit.net by Red2Blue, I asked him how you get square map terrain and he told me to go to Staredit.net and dl scmdraft2 so i did and i saw the forums it all interested me. I signed up, and some people might even rememeber my first post here, "how do I make a Bound map".
I was so noobish to map making i didnt even know how to make a ingame banner( tongue.gif ) Legacy Weapon pointed out a bound he made for teaching noobs (like me) on bound making. So i dl it looked at it figgured out the basic triggers and i say to myself "So THATS how you make triggers OoOoO"
I loved SeN so much many people now know me and some kinda hate me but who care sim here to have fun and make maps,My fist fool fledged map was Weird Bound then Rainbow 6 MICRO, and im making my new resident evil map.(people might notice that)

So now you know, much thanks to Red2Blue for recomending this site.

I visited the Clan (U) website ever since I saw it while I was playing one of their maps. It was the old geocities one ran by (U)Bolt_Head in his earlier years, where he led with Kamikaze. I visited the site everyday and just loved the music. Anyways, I already had a base knowledge, and just fiddled around until I completed my first RPG. On the way to doing my second one, I found SCMDraft, and X-tra, and they greatly helped me out throughout my mapping career. Anyways, I always followed the (U) site and when they got real forums at Shadowfortress.net, I signed up and begin interacting with them. biggrin.gif When the forums went down, after a while, they got a new forum at Staredit Network, while it was still in the bright white layout. I visited, looked at the maps in production and just browsed around. After a month or so, I finally decided to sign up, and made a production thread for my dead map, "Squads." The rest, is history. biggrin.gif

I was playing SC:BW and i was wondering like, "I should try to make maps" At first i just fiddled around with Campaign Editor. Then i started to know the triggers and things. I was wondering how bounds had square tiles pinch.gif at the time, and they wouldn't help me. Finally someone took notice and said u can make it with SCMDraft2. Then i googled SCMDraft2 and looked though sites. That is when i found SEN tongue.gif

I found it out of complete randomness, it was just another day and I was bored out of my mind so I started searching for retarded things like anime, some sc programs/maps, some band sites, then finaly SEN showed up when i searched for Starcraft it was like the 6th or 7th link down so I thought meh, check it out. Got in, no pop-ups so i thought that was a bonus (alot of sc sites have pop-ups...basterds!). Anyways I then found all the programs i wanted, some neat maps and yea...Google brought me to SEN. censored.gif lol
