You don't have to be an idiot to see the differences between multiplayer hacking and game modding. One embraces a unfair advantage over your opponent and the other isn't even related to multiplayer gameplay.

The unfair advantage of a hack that losers require to win is what people here do not approve of.. and the people that use them.

Syndicate's right. Modding doesn't provide an unfair advantage, because the changes are applied to all users and the users have all agreed to use the mod.

But you're not doing it to win, but to get amusement (usually in a non-multiplayer enviroment)

And I'd advise you not use internet slag here. (2, bbl, y, u... etc)

They have the right to sue you but they have bigger fish to fry. If you start developing and maintaining a WoW emulation server .. you have something to be afraid of.

It is my common belief that blizzard actually would endorce starcraft modding because it keeps peoples intrest in the starcraft community. It's not hurting anyone. Only unless the modder was charging a fee would Blizzard have something to say.

Technically yes. Hacking can be described as breaking down of already compiled code. If you make an editor, you are only manipulating the memory of SC, and you are not exactly hacking.

Hacking is a very vague term.

Modulations just replace the memory I think... I'm not really sure about Modulations because I do not use them....

But the hacking that SEN is refering to, is that of Multiplayer Hacking I believe.

It is implied that SEN's stance is against forms of hacking that provide unfair advantages in games.

I use map hacks ONLY on stackin games. Because, I don't have to number my units. Name spoofer aint so fun anymore... ermm.gif

There are two different hacks to me: cheats and enhancements. Enhancements just add new features or apply changes to all users playing the game. Cheats give one user an unfair advantage in a multiplayer game.

Blizzard frowns upon hacking.
SEN frowns upon hacking.

Blizzard does not care about modding; as long as it is not for commercial use.
SEN des not care about modding; as long as it is not for commercial use.

See the difference?

And you don't have to keep turning lughts on and off to see what you have already stacked, saving valuable stacking time. (That is the only thing I have ever used them for.)

Ok thats all I was going for is to say that technically it is hacking.

Y does it only have 2 only be multiplayer tho?

We have a strict policy against anything illegal. Blizzard has repeatedly expressed a stance that they don't mind our EULA breaches as long as we do not attempt to ruin the game. Notice they actually officialy now support Starcraft Modding, and have made abosulety no move to condemn 3rd party editors, but have repeatedly attempted to eliminate mailicious hacks.

Ic but why does blizzard support things that originally were hacks but dont support hacks?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BSTRhino on 2005-10-19 at 17:12:44
The way I define hacks is, they are programs that change the EXE code of a game. Mods are programs that change the data to the game, but they don't change the EXE code. I think there's a clear difference between the two, they're not the same thing.

To create mods, people reverse-engineered data files. You know, like changed a particular byte here or there in the MPQ. You don't exactly need to edit EXE code to mod.

He knows what the difference and such is, he's just wondering why people rarely bother to specify where their distinction between "good" things and "bad" things are.

Actually I was just clarifying the fact that technically modding is quite different from hacking.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Oo.Insane.oO on 2005-10-20 at 15:41:55
but some of the mods people make are just as bad as hacking.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MapUnprotector on 2005-10-20 at 18:47:00
Not if they can't be used in multiplayer with people who don't have the mod.

This discussion is going no where because it's like defining GOOD and BAD to someone who has lived in a box all his life.

The actual using of an editor like Xtra-Editor is not hacking. It's just the creating part.
