Staredit Network -> Games -> Do you like doing the same thing again and again?

I can't stand action games. There was a period of time when I could, but now, everytime I think of playing one, I feel nauseated.

When I talk about action games, I'm talking about you, a buff hero dude, versus hordes of stupid enemies. Games like D2, X-men Legends, Gauntlet Legends or Dynasty Warriors fit the bill. How can human beings enjoy doing the same things over and over?

Games like Counter-Strike aren't repetitive because there are so many variables, that having the same exact situation in the next round is nearly impossible. I'm talking about what weapons you use, the position of you and the enemy and terrain.

Strategy games aren't repetitive either because you and your enemy are always adapting to outsmart each other and counter each other's weakness. He's using lots of marines? Use lurkers. Lurkers a problem? Get science vessels. Vessels annoying? Say hello to scourges. If a game changes, there is definitely no repetition here.

Speaking of strategy, the developers at Total War made a great game with Rome: Total War. Then they make another repetitive hackfest with Spartan: Total Warrior. What the heck is wrong with them?

Sure, many action games have multiplayer, but you are only torturing another poor soul to play a painfully repetitive game with you. I can stand puzzle, strategy or maybe reflex games, but I HATE action games.

D2 has the trading aspect, but I would have to agree on the others. Hopefully they are going out of style, with all the new FPS shooters out, but I think they are now aimed at younger kids now-a-days.

When I was in 6th grade, DW4 was huge with my school.
>_<

World of Warcraft was like that. The only strategy was the Battlegrounds, where you fought against other players.

But fight monsters was SO DAMN BORING. The same sequence of buttons over and over, every kill.

This is why I never renewed my subscription.

Even Battlegrounds, the only strategy was to stick together. That was bascially all you needed to do to win.

It seems like everyone including mainstream reviewers are blind to the fact that you ARE doing the same things repeatedly. Then again, it's also true that big websites like gaespot get paid to write extremely biased reviews....

I think most people want games like GTA, but with different story lines, weapons, etc etc, well that's what I want. pinch.gif

People like to kill things, or they like how they die, still i play games that are very repetitive (very few though).

Blah, I played action games before they were cool. :/ Hey, I don't mind X-Men Legends and Dynasty Warriors, and I use to love Gauntlet Legends. Really, in X-Men Legends, I just love them multi-player, the combos, and just seeing the characters do attacks from the T.V shows and comics, it's nostalgic really. Dynasty Warriors, has kick ass attacks that look great, and cool weapons with bodyguards. Each scenario differs and requires different strategy, and you can't just expect to run in slashing like a madman. Of course, it may not be stragetic as other games, but it still pleases me.

I don't play many action games. If I do, I don't find them annoying or boring because I don't always play them so slashing at hordes of enemies don't bother me. It is fun once in a while but if I always only played that then I'm pretty sure I would get bored.

The fun is appealing in action games...for about half an hour. After that, it's just repetitive "Kill this" and "Defend that" and "Play Nearly Impossible Mini-game". But it's different for Dynasty Warriors. It's just basically the same game each time with one basic upgrade.

Blah, I could play Dynasty Warriors for hours. I just find it appealing to my tastes.

I can't imagine doing the same things for hours to be any fun. Can you describe what the pleasure is?

It makes me feel agitated because it feels like work. Enemy here. Push "attack" button. Repeat.

A strategy game allows me to choose my own method of achieving a goal. A reflex game demands perfection and precision. A puzzle game has me thinking in many ways to get the solution.

For example:

In Counter-Strike: Source there are such a wide of things you need to notice, think about, or react to, that I no longer call it an action, or shooter, game. It's a team-oriented, very intelleligent game.

Halo 2, on the other hand, I classify as a shooter. In the campaign, you blast through scores of enemies 'Weaker than you', and finally reach the boss. Online, there's no strategy to it. Counter-Strike forces you to use cover, flanking, grenade tactics (Flash, smoke), covering fire, etc. In Halo 2, a complete noob to the game can go running out into the center of a battlefield, getting shot at from several locations by the enemy, only to realize that he probably shouldn't be taking so many bullets, and runs away.

In Counter-Strike, people are quick to love or hate the game. The Halo 2 fans, who love being a human tank, can't stand taking one shot to the head and dying. The realism just doesn't appeal to them. Others pick up on the extreme amount of thinking that must go into the game.

Though I agree CS might be more fast paced than Halo, it's not a realistic game. Great points however.

A friend of mine that play a lot of Halo hate CS. I like both of them, but Im best in Halo tongue.gif
Diablo 2 is very boring when you have played it for a while, the only thing to do is to trade and get better items. The same is with WoW. However, in WoW there is a lot of quests you can do and you got the big high-level instances, but for me that aint "good enough"* for those instances its pretty boring to just take the small high level instances again and again without getting anything you need.

*Either I'm from wrong country or I'm too young, hate that... disgust.gif

I love the Final Fantasy series, but when you are either in a large desert or a large plain away from towns, it gets overly tiring and boring when you keep running into battles..with the same monsters and strategies to kill them.

Never said it was. Just the fact that you take one bullet through the skull and die.
Halo 2 takes, how many shots?
With anything but a sniper, that is...

Yea, I hate games that have very simple objectives, but just take a stupidly long time to finish. Like having to travel slowing across an entire world while getting into battles with weak monsters that are just meant to slow you down even more.

Since I think of it as a fun game to play instead of completing tedious tasks. How you percieve what you play is how much you enjoy it. If you think it's going to be long and repetitive and tedious, of course you'll find it less appealing if you take the game as something to pass the time and enjoy, that's how I play all my games. I have a much higher tolerance, but puzzle games aren't my cup of tea though. I mean, I love strategy and logic, but I need to kill something once in a while! biggrin.gif
