Staredit Network -> Games -> Realism in Video Games
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Shmeeps on 2005-10-24 at 20:22:59
I've heard alot of stuff about people wanting games to be realistic. So I've got a few things to say about it.

A game being realistic. Isn't that what a video games isn't supposed to be? Most video games are to get away from the real world and enjoy some good old fun. So why would we want it to be the same as our life.

Also, can't games get too realistic? Sure, things like gun recoil, or ironsights, to name a few, are pretty cool to a game. They can add an interesting skill and element to the game.

But still, if a game is so realistic, say, you gave to sleep, eat, ect. How about a game where you can randomly get sick and die, or get struck by lightning, ect. Wouldn't these be just, stupid? Do we want a game where you need to calculate the falling distance of a sniper bullet, or where you need to have surgery to remove bullets, or else you die? And are there games like this? Sadly, yes, but some may end up being kinda cool, like S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

So I'm wondering, everyone who says games need to be realistic, and everyone who doesn't, can a game be too realistic?

I say yes, and games really shouldn't be that realistic. Sure some things can be kinda cool, but I find the unrealistic games to be much more fun. Examples? Psi-Ops, a physic thriller. I'm not saying psionics don't exist, but, you don't see it everyday. And since you don't, it makes it oh, so much funner.

So in conclusion, I think that realism in video games should be kept to a sort of low level.

Your thoughts?

It depends what games it is. For instance Halo? Your a spartan soilder who can crack peoples skulls in with 3 fingers, it doesn't get any less realistic than that, unless if you account for the energy swords and aliens landing on earth, that's even more far out. GTA? No more realism please, I don't want 2 bullet shots to give me a sickness and I die within seconds, I don't care if you can't crash through lamp posts and I don't want to lose health for crashing into cars. However, games like MGS can get more realistic, they've already done so and it's been cool. If you want to die in a few shots, take on Very Hard mode, ther surgey is still in the game but it doesn't get in the way, I don't know if taking dumps should be added, but there's already eating, and sort of sleeping. There are few games that need realism, most are war games.

The most realistic game, at least in a game about shooting is Hostile Intent. It features no crosshairs, no health or ammo gauges, no scores tab to show you whos alive or not.

It is located at

www.hostileintent.org

As for my my preference on gaming... I really don't care about realism as long as it involves strategy. I absolutely hate hack and slash action games.

Games should be a bit realistic and reflect the things that is possible unlike some games where you get belt fed rocketlaunchers, those games are only fun for a bit and if you just feel like killing a lot of things. Some other games where it is more realistic are more tactical (sometimes) and more fun in my opinion. The thing about the iron sight, if you were in real life, you would have a better feel as to where you aim but in a game it is harder to aim because you don't get the "feel" of where things are, just my opinion. I also don't like games that involve living the day so I don't have much say on that except that you can only make games so realistic.

user posted imageI don't know about you, but I can "feel" when to shoot if someone blocks my little hole.

That sounded so wrong.

No, I mean when you are just holding the gun and not looking through to see where you aim. Like in some of the other pictures that you have shown.

That adds a little strategy.

Do I want to let my guard down and get to better positions as fast as I can?

Or do I not want to risk them ambushing me with my pants down?

Revelade, how many times have you mentioned Hostile Intent today?

That's a good question. If you find it out, I'll give you 3 minerals.

Games can never be "real" and those that strive to be will be compared to the real-life counterpart. It is neat, but realism does not mean the game will be fun.

I like Counter-Strike, it is somewhat real with killing and stuff, but what I like about it the most is the teamwork involved. THe game is so much fun.

The only thing about Hostile Intent (Only played it once or twice, so I don't remember much about it, so I'm assuming from the screenies) is that the gun seems to come from your chest. Most people don't have an arm there, and most people don't hold a gun there anyways.

Revelade: At least 10 times, only once that day though. I know, I have too much time on my hands.
Although it's better than working :/

The only things I like to see realistic in a game are as follows:
Graphics (Some games actually do this well.)
Animations (Such as ragdoll effects or explosions.)
Projectiles effected by wind/gravity. (Can add an interesting feature.)

Things I dont want realistic in a game:
Eat or you Die!
Crap or you Die!
Sleep or you faint!
One shot your dead...(not headshots, and yes it seems humans die in one shot if left untreated longer than a day.)
Projectiles effected by wind/gravity. (Can get annoying)

And I think thats it. But yea too realistic and i'll personaly blow up the stores that sell it...

I've uber-modded Morrowind with every realism mod knwon to god or man. I now have to eat, sleep, and drink, I bleed when struck in an unarmored area, naked people are actually naked, and the monsters I find can be any amount of levels higher than me.

P.S. You may actaully have to play Morrowind to understand

ADDITION:
P.P.S.P.S.S.P.P That was not every mod I have, by the way.

First do you want projectiles to be affected by wind, and then not? huh.gif

Anyway: Not only shooting games need to be realistic. Forza (X-Box) is a very realistic driving game in my opinion. Maybe too realistic for me tongue.gif Your car's performance goes down if you crash too much (hate when the steering fails dry.gif) and you really have to slow down in the turns to avoid getting of the track.

Anyone here played The Sims? That game was like...

Go to work.

Go to sleep.

Eat.

Take a $#it.

Eat.

Got to work.

etc...

A people still found it fun.

A liked it for about a week them it was all downhill from there.

I personally don't like that kind of realism in my games but I do like graphics to look real.

The Sims' amout of realism was put in there on purpose. Your soul objective is to raise a family, get a job, carry out a real life etc.. But in fighting games? No that would be horrible. RPG's might have some extent to that like sleeping, but not much more than that.

I like the sims, It is like a really fun game untill your character dies that you worked so hard to get him to the highest job of his job type and he lived a full life. It just makes me not wanting to do it again. It was just a fun simluation for what if's.

I want the graphics, engines, and audio to be realistic as possible. Thats what I want most next to gameplay.

True, Call of Duty has some realistic parts. I havent played 2 yet, but 1 had some nice things, like the part were your a russian soldier and they only give u ammo at the start. Thats how it went a long time ago.

But if the game was realistic, u should be considdered lucky when living through one bullet. Yes, U can put it on ''hard'' mode, but the easy mode defenitly isnt realistic. I mean, eating groceries and restoring health instantly, I dont think it works that way. Games can be more realistic then others, but with the techonology now, they cant be done as realistic as the real thing. And I dont think any of us want to experience a real war.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Shapechanger on 2005-11-03 at 08:38:33
Real war, you're usually fatigued and hungry. You can't simulate that via game. Also, if you actually felt the pain of being hit, instead of your screen just flashing red, I'm sure you'd never play the game. But then, that's why it is just a game, and not a simulator.

Of course you can't feel the pain, no one would buy the game.
And anyway, I'm trying to resolve this. Yes they could be a bit more realistic but where's the real fun in that? Just play on really hard mode, but on bf2 sometimes one bullet is all it takes.
