A good starting language is Visual Basic. There are different versions you can try. .NET is the newest one, but I use 6. It's NOT free. If you want free compilers try other languages such as..

C++ (SCMDraft2 is programmed in this)
Java (GUEDIT)

Do a search to find some free compilers. Then try some online tutorials to get a good feel for the language.

Once you understand how to read and write to binary files, you will have to extract a CHK from a MPQ archive. http://shadowflare.gameproc.com has some information on that. Then here is what a CHK file's specs are:

If you want to get into programming, (like me), then I think its easier to start with a scripting language.. it wont get you where u want to be, but you'll understand everything that you'll see.
I'm learning javascript and PHP, and when im done with that, probably Java.

i don't like java, either. i guess it's just because your dad has been working with it for a while and actually understands what is going on. our teacher brings a guy like that into our class sometimes (turns out he works where i do, too) and he explains things because our teacher sometimes has no clue what's wrong. he taught me how to use the switch statement biggrin.gif. have him work with karel. everyone in my class wants it to die.

You can program, or you can mod. Either one. I know alot about scripting and how it works, yet I dont use my knowledge to program. I modded the editor, Staredit to make Staredit 2. So which one do you want?

Program SE : Customize like crazy!
Mod SE : Easy to use!

ยป You can program, or you can mod.

But if you learn to program, your knowledge will go far beyond just Staredit. You could learn VB, but C/C++ is awesomer. Java sucks

Check out my little signature image. C, IT'S IN THE GAME...

I would also suggest starting with learning how to spell words such as "professional" and "beginning..."

i know a bit of javascript, but not enough to do anything with. (you know, random crap like prompts and alerts.. and wtf is with variants?)
