Staredit Network -> Lite Discussion -> Having a life...

I've heard the excuse many times. People go to do something but quit because they "have a life."

Looking back now, it seems that many of the times I hear people say they have a life, they actually mean "I'd rather sit on the couch and sleep or watch tv." Coming to the conclusion that I would rather have no life than have one might seem strange, but it would be more productive.

Do you think having a life is simply an excuse?

I can understand quitting a gaming community for more real life time to spend. A.k.a., a life, but when they quit something like a gaming community for something pointless, that's confusing.

Well if it's like because your girlfriend (not an imaginary girlfriend) is going to dump you because you don't spend enough time with her or something because you're too busy playing StarCraft, then I'd say having a life is a plus, not just an excuse. I think usually saying "I have a life fark off, you should get one too" is mainly an excuse for doing things badly online though...

Most of the people in my school that brag about having a "life" spend their time doing either:

1) Getting high.

2) Playing Halo 2.

Now, the reasons why Halo 2 is considered a life, but SC and programming are not is unclear to me... tongue.gif

Its because halo is newer and they think it better than an old game even tho i think starcraft is a much better one

In my opinion having "a life" should mean doing what you love to do.

Dammit, I just posted, but I think SEN is screwed or maybe it's my computer tongue.gif anyhow I put that I thought that people meant either of two things whenever they said get a life, and almost always the first one is at least subtly part of it. The first is that they are angry because you did better than them and so they make up an excuse. The second is that they genuinely believe that having friends and stuff is better than just a computer. But usually is they make a comment like "Get a life." The first is usually part of what they're saying. I don't really think anyone every says like "Get a life." after a game in genuine concern...

People only think they need to "have a life" because they are not proud of what they're doing. It really comes down to be dissatisfied with themselves as they are at that moment in time. But if you spend all of your life in pursuit of some goal, then you won't get to smell the roses! Like John Lennon said "Life is what happens while you make other plans." Be happy that you're spamming SEN or playing/making a fun map or spending time with your friends. No one has ever laid on their deathbeds and said "Damn, I had too much fun in my life."

"I'd rather sit on the couch and sleep or watch tv."

If that's what you call "having a life" I wouldn't say you've done very much fulfilling living.

Yeah, I really don't like it when people refer to my friends on StarCraft as...
well.. "not real friends."
As if the people on StarCraft didn't really exist or matter.

Having a life is usually doing something active, with other people that you can see/touch.

You can touch the computer and you can see images on the computer. If you play video games you are active on the computer.

LOL, Just Kidding.

I totally agree with you.

But to speak as them as "fake" is just wrong.
They are people too, they are not robots.

I think of having a life as socializing more and hanging out with friends and other people.

Saying "I have a life" is solely and excuse because the people that actually do have a life just quietly dissapear without making a gigantic scene of it.

They say not their real friends because they don't want to be labeled outsiders for thinking of people online as friends as well I believe anyhow. Also there is a sort of distinction between online friends and in-person friends (best term I could think of). With online friends it's harder to verify if they really do the things they say they do and are the things they say they are, because with in-person friends if someone isn't really like 6 feet tall it's obvious just by looking at them, whereas online you have no way of even being able to tell if a picture of them is actually them. Just my opinion

If I told my friends and peers what I really did all day, they'd laugh at me and tell me to get a life...so yeah. yawn.gif I could tell them it's my life, but that won't stop the laughing. wink.gif

You might be just kidding about it, but I think that's really how some people feel about it.. All my friends know I play computer all the time. They all think of my as "The Computer Guru" lol. Whenever someone has a problem with their computer it's my job to solve it.

If you're separating yourself from the rest of society/isolating yourself, then you don't have a life. Millions of people play video games, that doesn't mean you don't have a life.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Doodan on 2005-10-31 at 21:06:04
You also don't have a life if you're dead.
