Staredit Network -> Games -> What verse How

My concept is that we can categorize games into what/how games.

For example, Zelda is a what game. Why is this? Well, inside dungeons, if you even get there, you are trying to figure out WHAT you have to do to proceed.

As for a how game, take a look at Gran Turismo 4. You already know WHAT to do, press gas, slow on turns and get to the end first. The question is HOW you drive that determines if you win or not.

Starcraft is a mix of both types. You need to know WHAT choices to make, whether it is expanding to building firebats to counter lings. Then you must also know HOW to do each job such as microing marines to spread out against lurkers, etc.

In strategy games, the game is based on WHAT you decide to move.

In racing or Tony Hawk games, it depends on HOW you do something, because you already know WHAT to do.

So in a game like Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes (It's one of the games I know we both have played) you already know WHAT your going to do, but your figuring out HOW to get there?
I don't really see many WHAT games then, except like RTSs, but even then you know you need to capture a base, just how are you going to do it. And do you want this to be done for all games? That's going to take a while.

It's basically a general/soldier relationship.

The general orders WHAT the soldiers are going to do.

The soldier is the one that decides HOW he is going to do it.

Does the analogy help?

Yeah I know what you ment by What and How but I can't think of many games where you play "the general".

Couldn't it be said that you also need to know "HOW" you're going to do it, in Zelda games.

There is no HOW in chess. The way you move a piece is the same way a pro moves that same piece. There is a HOW in counterstrike because it's nearly impossible kill someone the same exact way on the same map with the same people at the same time.

"How am I going to check my opponent." ...-_-

From what it seems like every game is both how and what... what would Dr.Mario be? biggrin.gif

Basically, if you don't know what to do in a game, such as Zelda, it's a WHAT game. If you know what to do, but have to do it multiple times to perfect it, such as a racing game, it's a HOW game.

That would make Chess a how game then...You know what you do, move pieces in order to checkmate your opponent, but how are you going to do it? Move all pawns forward and try to check him? Different strategies for the same conditions.

The best how game is Final Fantasy Tactics.

All games are HOW games cuz you always think 'how am i gonna WIN'

I guess, althought how I am going to win is somewhat vague.

In Counter-Strike, it is not so difficult to get two kills exactly the same way with near the same circumstances. This is because of the vast profusion of hacks involved in CS.

Are you going to provide a counter-arguement or make a rebuttal of all the replies or is this theory just going to die?

As far as I know, there really isn't an argument worth debating over.

Do I really need to explain how nonsensical this statement really is?
