Staredit Network -> SEN v5 Alpha -> Moderation

Not completely ready yet for testing (I'll post)...
But I want your opinions on how I'm doing things -- Especially with the assumptions made in "Close".

Topic Moderation
Pin & Unpin
Basic...

Close *
Upon closing a topic, you will be prompted via javascript for a reason.
Cancel = Cancels the action.
Entering no reason = Close topic with "Topic served it's purpose" and does not enter an entry into the member's logs.
Entering a reason = Close topic with reason and enters entry into a member's logs.

Now, the biggest thing here is I'm assuming that if you are closing a topic, it's because of two reasons. The user is naughty and deserves a "warning" or the topic has served it's purpose and no warning is necessary. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Open *
Simply opens the topic back up.

Delete *
Upon closing a topic, you will be prompted via javascript for a reason. Anything other than entering a reason cancels the action.

Deleting a topic is serious, so, I assume you are doing it because the topic breaks rules outright, like, porn. Thus, a reason is required and it will go in their logs.

Deleting a topic sends it to "The Void" where admins/globals can still read the topic, in case a reference check needs to be made. It will also show all users that the topic was deleted with the reason.

Visible / Invisible *
In senv5, a deleted topic never really gets deleted, so, other than posts that initially get put into invisible (portal news), this really shouldn't be used. If a topic is really bad and you wanted someone higher to see it to take more appropiate action, we still can even if you delete it.

Move
Basic. It won't enter into their logs because its not really serious... however it will pm them with a notice that their topic was moved. I'm going to avoid those topic entries that are only links to moved topics in senv5.

Edit Title/Description
Basic. In this screen you'll have to manually decided if this moderation action goes into their logs.

Moderation in forum view (bulk moderation) has very little changes. However, although you can select multiple topics, you can only do one at a time if you are editting the topic title/description. This is mostly just because I'm lazy.

* - Sets up the tier system I was talking about earlier...
Once a moderator does any of these actions to a topic, the creator ceases to have the power to alter the topic. Likewise, once an admin alters a topic, globals no longer have the power to do anything to it. There might be some flaws with this idea for some unique cases, but atm, I can't think of any. Do you see any flaws with this? Maybe it should only be that once a person with power alters the topic, the creator looses power... and that if a global alters a topic, a regular moderator still could?

Regarding IP's last paragraph.

I say once a Mod, Global or Admin closes or does something to a thread, the creator loses all power over that thread.
If an Admin closes it, Globals and Mods can still act upon it.

Staff(Mods,Globals,DLDB Keepers.. etc..) & Admins know how to Moderate the forums and I highly doubt that we will go around doing as we please. If we close//open something that another one of us closed//opened, I know that we will have our reasons.

Also everybody does mistakes moderating, imagine how hard it would be to fix a thread that was accidentally closed by an admin. You'd had to wait for that admin to come back, it'll be much easier if any other mod could just go around and fix it by himself//herself.

Make sure users can say it's not completely "Solved" if we mark it solved and they don't think it is yet.

Love this, excellent idea.

THere should be an option when locking a topic whether to let creator be able to reopen it or not.

I don't have anything to add right now, but I just wanted to say that I think these are great ideas! smile.gif

I agree with all of KeG's, Legacy's and DTBK's suggestions/amendments.

I agree with BeeR on the totem pole concept. Also, why have delete when you have invisible/visible...aren't they practically the same thing?

I think the idea is that deleting topics makes them invisible, but puts them all in the same place - so "deleting" is better than making it invisible (since it doesn't really get deleted either way).

I agree with DTBK, disabling the creator from modifying the topic should be an option.

For example, in the Modding and Mapping Assistance forums, we usually lock a thread and add the [SOLVED] tag. But what if the person has a problem with the solution? Usually, they re-open the topic. In SEN v5, they shouldn't lose the ability to do that.

I'm so happy to hear about this patch.. This is the 1 everyone has been talking about for.... hummmmmmm 1 year now?? Good gob Purity. The moderation sounds awsome.

Is topic splitting/merging really necessary? ;o
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Snipe on 2005-12-03 at 09:50:48
What do you mean?? as in you don't like it? or you really don't think its good. Because i think its really good. In clan Oo forums i use it all the time and it seems necessary almost all the time. People have realated topics you can combine and such.

As in I really don't feel like coding it ;o

During all the time I've been Global Mod, 1 year minus the time I was out, I've only used merging about 3 times and I've never used split.

Hmmm... Keep merge, lose split.

Keep them both - you never know.
I have faith isolated. sad.gif

(And when I think about it can't be that hard to make)

I object to the "creator can no longer do anything" bit. Why? Well, when my new "What if" topic was closed (because the previous on the second page, which hadn't been posted in for two weeks was still open) I closed the previous topic, PMed BeeR (who closed it) on the situation, posted in my thread about the situation, but relocked it. The only answer I received was "when I checked, it wasn't locked". It was never reopened, and since I've never got any answer towards it, I reopened it. No other problems thus far.

If you are going to implement this system, I suggest that either the ability to open close is moderated (though priviledges of this type tend to mean that only the old members get anything) or a member with a new warning level or whatever cannot open/close topics for awhile, varying on offense. I'd prefer the second, really.
