All this time, I've always learned how to make maps on my own; all the remakes of triggers so they're more organized and work better, the intensive testing again and again, and all the ideas I've thought of and have stored-
All of this has been thought of! I never really got online to look at tutorials- in fact, it never came to me...
Now I feel like I don't even want to make maps anymore... the ideas and discoveries I have will simply seem like someone else's idea.
Anyone else go through what I am right now?
On the other hand
This place is a great place, but why are people so damn critical and it seems that as soon as someone think they've discovered something that's already been discovered, people flame like a 13 yr in the ghettos...
Try taking the already discovered functions and applying them to something new. Hell, just today I figured out a way to randomize health percentages for units.
maybe u havent noticed......
Welcome to Staredit.Net
get used to it
lots of little old immature full grown people here, responding like little nublets to already known discoveries
yeah... i thought of a lot of ideas too but then i find out that someone else has ALREADY thought of it.... STOP BEING SO INVENTIVE!!!!
srry about that sie, my brain just keeps coming up with new ideas XP
Look through the tutorials, get a new idea. Try to invent something new.
*ahem*
Didn't I say things like this was going to happen?
Yeah, I went through a little of this when I first found the website. But I decided to accept that I can't (realistically) hope to surpass the map techniques of some of the mappers here. Sooooo, my new focus is on story and characters. I've always cared about that, but I just made it the emphasis OVER map making techniques. I'm seen some cool map tricks, but if there's a story lacking (where a stroy is required) then it just sucks a lot of the life out of it. Take "The Honourless" for example, the trigger work and tricks were only average, but the story was fantastic, which is why it's one of my favorites.
I'm fairly confident in my writing ability, so I've chosen to develop that and make it the focus of my maps. Find your strength, and stick to it.
Well, just about to reveal my project map as an experimental map, I realized something:
An idea is like something invented, like the Lost in Time (LiT) map of nanaki_xiii (for those who don't know, it's a great starcraft epic based on the final fantasy series with random battles and many other functions), is but an idea, it's how you use it that makes it unique.
So someone made something.... something unique. Well, I grabbed that something unique and made it more unique... my style! I guess kind of like branch-off churches.
The LiT map had 2 max players, 1 battle field, and if I remember right, when you enter the battle field, it chooses between 2 sets of monsters. The map was protected and I never figured out exactly how he did that.
Then I saw pimpinelephant's experimental map of random battles and realized that I've grasped that concept and made it complex... though it would have saved me a lot of time knowing a few things earlier -_-
When I saw SC-Ghost.X's "The Curse of the Tape Demonstration" I thought "Whoa, though simple the triggers are... it's all about the creativity...!"
Therefore I shall continue my map. Will I ever finish? Who knows. I have about a month, then I begin college and cant afford to do play games anymore... But until then, I will write a story first (wanting to become a novelist someday) then apply it to my map!
Wait for it everyone, you mark my words!!!
I think EVERY author realizes at some point that EVERYTHING has been done a million times already. It's just about refreshing ideas and smearing them with your personality. It's like, the world has always been there, what an author gives is a chance for someone else to see it through their eyes.
Whoa.... getting philisophical there... I'm trying to watch that.
Once I was making a map with StarForge and was looking through the Master Pallete, I noticed similarities between Cliff and Costal cliff tiles. I put them together to make a raised "Lookout area" (a 3x cliff) on one of my maps. I thought "This is the best idea ever!". About a month later I find SEN and click the Terrain Forum to tell of my "new" discovery, only to find that people were already mastering it.
There is one example. (I feel like the title alot)
Us average little map makers find something cool and new to our little world, then we explore the larger world of SEN and find it has already been done.
ADDITION:
Another example is when you think of something, but because of certain restrictions you cannot do it. That pisses me off.
When I was about 6 I was into engineering and constructing things. (One of these things was roller coasters).
I came up with this idea of putting an extra bar on the track to make you spin in circles on an axis. I came up with all these drawings and designs on how to make this work with the movement of the car. (The restriction on this was my age (about 6), and the fact that I had pretty much no education then)
About a year or so ago, the local theme park "Lagoon" opened a ride called "The Spider" that does that same thing. (If you knew them, you could ask my parents about my reaction)
Whoa, I was just at Lagoon... well, it was like beginning of last summer, senior lagoon day. I'm in Logan, where are you?
Yeah, but ...
wtf I just heard a voice and no one's here... it was loud and clear too, jebus that scare dme...
Anyway, I just thought of shakespeare... his stories weren't anything new, it was how he presented it.

Murray. (Going a bit off-topic.
If you has anything to say about where I live, PM it)
Ah well, I wont bother ya. Sorry minigameEast and ophelia, I wasn't around when you guys said that so yeah...
heh same here, but mostly i got ideas from other ppl's maps, somew ideas of my own were either done more proffessional or just done
so i hear ya buddy, this place is still a good place to learn new triggers and concepts etc.
welcome to staredit network fm
I just got an idea to do a firefighter map. Then it hit me.

Lol your posts do sound like a "novelist" post. Like how you use the commas and i dono your grammer. Sounds all educated and stuff. Anyways yea people easily find out its quite hard to think of new ideas. I think the funnest maps have "overused" ideas, but implement the idea in a fun way.
If people don't trust each other on who discovered what, we might as well all steal each others ideas and say we invented them first.
Lol, it's a habit for me to use punctuation because it bothers the hell out of me when my friends don't use it. Sometimes you can't even tell if it's a freaking question or not
(This post may have been a bit delayed, rofl)

dude! u forgot a period! SHAME ON YOU
I don't know what your all talking about. I'm still getting plenty of original ideas.
Granted, I start making maps for them, rather than just announce that I have an idea.
Just wait untill spring, when a revolution of new maps will be released.
AHHH THE PERIOD >< I hate it when I forget those -_-
I'm rather excited rantent. I'm not sure if I'm using original techniques, but most of them sure have come from within myself and that's good enough for me.
I hear you man once I had this idea to make obsticals where fire explodes and you got to dodge it like frogger and a couple days later I saw a map like that it was called a Bound J/k
But I do think of something jiust to find it already done
